Robert Spillane could never play the role they put him in tonight. Doesn't mean he couldn't play a role, but just not that one. Clearly when they needed it they just cleared out and put a back with him one on one and it was a more than 80% win. Great story last year. Really good downhill run stuffer, but cannot possibly play at this level in the role he had tonight.

Yep he is a run stopping specialist which is why we died over the middle last season once bush was out

Spillane gets beat in coverage eight times in a row.

Mike Tomlin: "We don't need to change anything, we just need to do better."

Uhh, no, you need to change having Robert Spillane in coverage.

Spillane gets one pass in the fact our defensive line put zero pressure on Carolina QB's . Saying that I ask why do these defensive coaches put him in this position. In reality our defensive backs did no better .

This is the part of Mike Tomlin coaching that has many seeing the average coach he is. This is why many question his HOF statis. It's the below the line with his above the neck ability.

Yes pressure always helps pass defense. But if you get beat like a rented mule. You cannot play. There was one play, Carolina was backed up and lost 8 yards on first down. You could see they just sent every wr deep and said this guy can't cover. They got 13 and made third down very manageable.

100 percent agree. He can only find guys to do what he wants to do. He cannot change what he is doing to suit the guys he has. Which is why they made the trade with Jax. And I'm not saying he could have coached Spillane to be able to cover these guys in space. But you get a lot of guys on your roster. If he gets a square peg and a round hole he just stands there and looks at it till the end of the season and gets a different peg.

I'll add this, for what it's worth...

Spillane is a good football player when surrounded by good talent. Last night he was put in a position that he probably hasn't been in since college or HS.

The entire secondary looked terrible from the highlights I've seen (I'm watching the game later).

As long as we got out of the game with no serious injuries this game was meaningless.

But let's find another reason to be angry at the coaching staff LMAO!!!

Well then you better hope about 5 guys on this defense stay healthy because if one of them goes IR this defense will fold like a cheap suit.

One reason why HCMCS is usually one-and-done in the playoffs.

I'm watching now.

Carolina has quite a few starters on the field, well into the first quarter. Score - 3-0.

I know we'll be ok.

Not even worth worrying about...

The problem is the scheme. Joe Schobert is much better than Spillane in coverage, yes, but surely Tomlin can't continue to expect either one (or Bush) to consistently cover wide receivers like DJ Moore and Robby Anderson. There is no inside linebacker in the league who can get that job done. It can work for a play here or there, but not all game long. It's ridiculous.

Very very true. I don't expect any linebacker to cover a wr. But the back I believe Chubba Hubbard was beating him consistently too. And I don't even mind a catch. But catch and run???

I didn't give a rats *** about last night but it's pretty clear Haskins isn't all that and a bag of chips and they are still very thin on defense.

Chuba Hubbard ran a 4.36 at Oklahoma State's pro day. Spillane runs a 4.77. You do the math.

Coverage isn't just a foot race. Hubbard isn't slick like a wr. You can use a leverage to wall him and force a catch and tackle. He was made to look bad. My son did make a really good point. Why wasn't Edmunds in that spot?

What pisses me off the most is that Cleveland kicked our collective ***** all game in the playoff by lining Landry up in the slot and having Spillane cover him. it was always good for a first down. When our D rose to the challenge and stopped them a couple times and we made the game close, they just ramped up attacking Spillane with Landry and they marched right down the field and scored (nearly at will). Yet, this ******* coaching staff led by Mr. Cool Shades didn't learn a ******* thing - we still have LB's covering WR's - that is ******* insane!!! Tomlin is not a ******* NFL coach - he's high school at best!

Easy answer - most of the starters sat...

No, it isn't just a foot race. Hubbard isn't a wideout, but he did catch 53 passes in his college career. He's no slouch as a receiver, and his speed advantage in a matchup against Spillane is significant.

Your son should have realized that Edmunds wasn't playing in the game.

We weren't speaking of the game. We were speaking in general. Because what happened in that game will happen in the regular season when they go dime. Bush and the Jax guy won't get beat as bad but they will still get beat. Edmunds was brought in as a hybrid LB safety but is positioned out of the screen on most passing downs.

Yeah,

Me thinks Spillane is a smart player, lacks speed like Williams.
Aside, surround him by zone packages where a safety, another ILB or a corner can cover his lack of speed, I think he’ll be alright
