The Good

Antonio Brown The man the gift the monster. Great hands great focus and 100% effort. When all the rest of the supporting cast was so so, Antonio showed up to play.

TJ Watt Questionable penalty aside, it is what you like to see from a rookie first rounder in his first start. It is that trademark effort, and while this was only the clowns... I still came away impressed. Two sacks a INT and some solid QB pressures throughout the game. And I thought his run defense was solid too. Arrow is pointing up obviously.

Anthony Chickillo He got the call due to Dupree's multiple minor injuries. And played well. Two sacks, solid run D, and a recovery for a TD off a special teams play. His play improved in training camp, and it carried over to game 1.

Run defense I thought overall a solid outing. No big complaints. If not for some Kizer scrambles, the tally would be for a whopping 40 yards.

The Bad

Martavis Bryant and Lev Bell Both rusty for different reasons. Although Bell started to shake some of that off I thought towards the end. I don't foresee a low yardage season foe Bell, off of one game as I think he will quickly rebound. I will say in their favor that the O-line in regards to opening up lanes, didn't have their best game. I don't anticipate that being a reoccurring problem either .Martavis was off a year so you are seeing the results from that, plus the clowns safety was back seat driving pretty much the entire game. I don't advise that as a game plan for teams moving forward, As the O will simply take what you give them when the rust is shaken off.

Juju Two penalties, no catches for this second round rookie. Not a good start. Too many of these and you will see a certain free agent WR with a game day hat. Not sure how long special teams can save you, especially when your special teams play is well............... not so special.

McDonald Ol McDonald had no catches E I E I OH, and on the field he had a drop E I E I OH with a week rumor of practice drops not a good start. Which will keep you from well, not getting a start.

The Ugly

Slow starts on the road Perhaps the team should thank their lucky stars they were playing Cleveland.

Penalties That will have to be cleaned up. Some real stupid ones mixed in with a few questionable ones.

Playing it safe on third and long You have this roster report-ably deep on talent, I prefer on these plays at least a attempt is made to try to get the first down.

MY two and a half cents

*A win is a win is a win is a win.

* Conner still continue's to run well to the left and not so well to the right. A trend?

* Hopefully Tuitt won't be out long term. Fingers crossed.

* I thought Haden played well overall for a short body of work, coming off a sign and play.

* The middle of the field continues to be a worry in pass defense. Vince Williams will be a liability that should not be used in coverage if they can help it.

* Hargrave is a real solid option to have in the middle of that defense.

* Gay still gives you those smart physical plays, and gives away those pass catching slow afoot plays.

* Heyward with a solid performance coming off a season ending injury.

* Dirty Red with a down and dirty ST block resulting in a early TD, is a mention-able.

Alualu is an upgrade backup. lets hope he doesn't start

I am officially in the camp of allowing Matakevich to play over Williams. Same for Hilton over Gay.

Wilcox got hurt, and I hope it's not serious. I'd like to see more of what he can do.

Tomlin said Tuitt was the only injury of concern. I think Wlcox just got a stinger..

Offense has gotta be able to score more than 14 points. Without those penalties the O would have looked better. I wish I could have seen a replay on the one throw over the middle to Eli. Seems like his size would have made that a hit to his head. OL did not play well and that made everything look worse.

Defense looked sloppy but, at least, only allowed 18 points. Need those penalties gone too. Too many missed tackles, again.

Williams was pretty much nonexistent. The Gay hit was Maximum Violence Football. I liked it.

DEFINATELY..................... Hilton over Gay. Dirty Red needs just a little more seasoning and HOIPE Wilcox isn't out to long along with Tuitt. Need everyone playing and banging. Ben Looked a little rusty at the start and took a couple 1/4s to kinda get going. LOT of pluses considering it's a slow STARTING tomlin coached team. Just think, Rothlessberger is the WINNINGEST starting QB at Cleveland home field. What a disgrace to Cleveland as team, as a city, as a fan, truly a FACTORY of sadness.

Salute the nation

That catch AB made to pretty much ice the game was one of the best catches by a Steelers WR I've seen in a long time. Swanny would have been proud of that one.

I think they were shaking off the rust like all the other teams. I'm not going to get too excited about this win but I'm not going to complain about it either.

Next!

ugly, is the O.

sad....every year is promised as the best talent...every year it fails.

I know. it's only one game. But when do we get the points? Or anything that looks like a cohesive unit.

Brown doesn't need to shake off rust. He's polishing his HOF bust! He's a once in a decade player. We were lucky to have Polamalu, and now we have Brown. I'd like to throw Harrison in there as well, but he's a tweener for the HOF much like Lloyd, but with better credentials.

O-line looked like ****, no running lanes.

You get the bad offense to start the season because they don't play in the preseason.

Gay showed he isn't done yet, almost grabbed another pick 6 and had several nice hits.

Seemed like James best game as a receiver, the two TD's were not easy. If all McDonald does is push James, he was worth the pick-up.

Gay is so much better suited in a complimentary nickle or dime role. When he is a starter out on the the island, it's trouble. Before he became a starter he was excellent in that role.

Shout out to the Special Teams unit. Not only did they block a punt and recover for a touchdown. But, they contained a very dynamic player in Jabriel Peppers!

This unit has clearly been on a mission for improvement and meaningful impact in the games. It's been a trend all through pre-season.

Totally agree, it's one of those things I think with Gay where less is more.

The offense in the first half was painful to watch. It didn't take more than a quarter into the new season to remind me why the Steelers frustrate me so much.

1. Someone mentioned it in another post, but WTF is the thinking behind running four wide receiver screens in a row...and I think 5 total in that first possession after penalties. Can someone please tell me (seriously) what is the logic to that strategy? Was it to let Ben...a 13 year, SB winning, Pro Bowl QB to get a feel for the regular season game speed? Was is to draw Cleveland up into the box to exploit them downfield later? If so, don't you need something that works to bait someone...and they never went deep anyway. I just don't get it.

2. The first 3rd and short the Steelers had...they went empty backfield. Is there any layered thought at all going into the play calling?

3. The penalties. Over the past 3 or four years, I'm inclined to believe the Steelers are near the top of the leauge in most penalties per game. I haven't researched it...those days of my interest level are gone, but it sure passes the FEEL test.

I know...a win is a win. They were shaking the dust off, and I have no doubt they will get better. But I'm also just as certain they will crap the bed at least 3-4 times this year in winnable games because they are not a well coached team. They will overcome that with pure talent.

That is our offense on the road vs bad teams, it's like we are afraid to open it up and have a mistake and allow the crowd into the game or something.

I hate going empty set on 3rd and short, theres no run option for the D to worry about.

Jesse James made very important Catches to keep drives going. Looked better than he did in preseason.

Good

AB was so far above anyone else playing that he looked like he was on another level

Jesse James was good

Lots of sacks, but alot were due to Kizer holding onto the ball too long.

BAD

Play calling was terrible

Offense was putrid

Refs .. I think that the calls were right, but late. Also missed a few calls that would have been in our favor.

Tackling is poor. No tackling fundamentals which lead us to several personal fouls. Not sure what happened to tackling at the waist and wrapping up. Think they need to watch some rugby. Watts personal file was iffy, but he should not have even attempted to dive there. Kizer was already down or going down so there was no need to pile on.

The browns maybe better than advertised. Defense looked pretty solid and Kizer seems to have potential at least. He didn't get rattled and led a composed late scoring drive. If they get some more weapons i dont think they will be an easy out.

Plain and simple. Blocked punt TD saved our *****. Ben and AB won the game after that. Offense gameplan was stupid from the start, fire Haley.

Defense shaky, but we knew they were weak up the gut and would get run on.

Secondary didn't look too bad, Joe looked pretty decent and Gay was actually a presence.

Fixed that for you.

Haden and Wilcox. 2 very good additions to the secondary. I liked what I saw. Especially from 21

New TE with clank hands only got one drop then he was pulled, I think - Jesse looked better
