When asked why Herbig didn’t play on the last drive when they needed a pass rush, he said they thought Cincy was going to run the ball so they loaded up with heavy.

When asked how they can fix the defense, he said it’s simple: stop the run.

He also said that the early big runs caused them to change the scheme to stop it.

This team is still living in 1994.

21 attempts to Chase prior to the final drive, with limited time on the clock, and he and Tomlin thought they better concentrate on the run?

Here is a transcript of his presser:

Reporter:
Coach Austin, your defense gave up over 200 rushing yards and Ja'Marr Chase had three touchdowns. What exactly was the game plan?

Coach T-Bone:
Well, uh… we figured if we just kinda stood there and looked real intimidating-like, they’d get scared and stop running. That didn’t happen. So, Plan B was… well, we didn’t really have a Plan B. I thought maybe they'd get tired?

Reporter:
Why didn’t you adjust when Chase kept getting open?

Coach T-Bone:
Adjust? Oh, you mean like… move the players around? Yeah, I thought about that. But I didn’t want to confuse the guys. We practiced standing in one spot all week. Didn’t wanna throw off their groove.

Reporter:
You had eight in the box and still couldn’t stop the run. What went wrong?

Coach T-Bone:
I think the problem was… they kept running around the box. I told our guys to stay inside the imaginary square I drew on da chalk board. But the Bengals didn’t respect the box. That’s on them, not us.

Reporter:
Did you consider double-teaming Chase?

Coach T-Bone:
We did! We had two guys watching him real close. One was watching his cleats, the other was counting his steps. But then he ran past them. Real fast.

Reporter:
What will you do differently next week?

Coach T-Bone:
Next week? Oh, I’m thinking of switching to a 1-1-9 defense. One guy up front, one in the middle, and nine guys just kinda vibing in the end zone. That way, we’re already there when they score.

Reporter:
Final thoughts on the team's performance?

Coach T-Bone:
I think we learned a lot. Mostly that the Bengals don’t play fair. They kept using plays we didn’t study. It's just not fair!

Now imagine this staff getting through 2 to 3 playoff games, then coming out on top in the superbowl.

As vivid of an imagination that I possess, I just can’t imagine This. ^^^
