Here is a transcript of his presser:
Reporter:
Coach Austin, your defense gave up over 200 rushing yards and Ja'Marr Chase had three touchdowns. What exactly was the game plan?
Coach T-Bone:
Well, uh… we figured if we just kinda stood there and looked real intimidating-like, they’d get scared and stop running. That didn’t happen. So, Plan B was… well, we didn’t really have a Plan B. I thought maybe they'd get tired?
Reporter:
Why didn’t you adjust when Chase kept getting open?
Coach T-Bone:
Adjust? Oh, you mean like… move the players around? Yeah, I thought about that. But I didn’t want to confuse the guys. We practiced standing in one spot all week. Didn’t wanna throw off their groove.
Reporter:
You had eight in the box and still couldn’t stop the run. What went wrong?
Coach T-Bone:
I think the problem was… they kept running around the box. I told our guys to stay inside the imaginary square I drew on da chalk board. But the Bengals didn’t respect the box. That’s on them, not us.
Reporter:
Did you consider double-teaming Chase?
Coach T-Bone:
We did! We had two guys watching him real close. One was watching his cleats, the other was counting his steps. But then he ran past them. Real fast.
Reporter:
What will you do differently next week?
Coach T-Bone:
Next week? Oh, I’m thinking of switching to a 1-1-9 defense. One guy up front, one in the middle, and nine guys just kinda vibing in the end zone. That way, we’re already there when they score.
Reporter:
Final thoughts on the team's performance?
Coach T-Bone:
I think we learned a lot. Mostly that the Bengals don’t play fair. They kept using plays we didn’t study. It's just not fair!
