By Brandon J. Wallace SteelerNation.com ** With the recent signing of TE Eric Ebron, the Pittsburgh Steelers parted ways with TE Nick Vannett on Saturday afternoon. A solid blocker, Vannett combined for 17 receptions between his time in Seattle and Pittsburgh last year. He’ll complement Noah Fant in Denver. https://t.co/xqCprCwEBv — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March […]

/certainly didn't get 5th round value, but desperate times.....And as well documented you get what you can out of the draft and statistically its one or two guys. They don't usually come out of the 5th round.

TE back on the agenda come draft time ?

I like Harrison Bryant out of Florida Atlantic .in the 4th .... needs to add a few pounds but offers more upside than Gentry IMHO

Who?

Still should give the kid from Michigan Gentry a fair shot. Possibly has improved.

I tend to agree, though Gentry is in the mold of Ebron, ie more a pass-catching TE. Steelers seem to like their 3rd TE to be more a blocker, ST guy...so maybe they'll still look to bring someone in, FA or draft and see how it plays out.

I thought he was under contract for 1 more year. Grabbing Vannett showed how badly the steelers mismanaged the TE situation last year. They were forced to spend a 5th rounder for a 1 year mediocre rental.

???? Forced because of our personnel that was underperforming on offense...

Plus, It was a good deal for where we were when we pulled the trigger...We were in position to grab that final playoff spot and needed additional offensive weapons...Remember we got NOTHING from JUJU or CONNER all year long...Seriously practically nothing...

I said at the time it was all done to get Tomlin his 8 wins. Waste of a 5th round pick.

What? We were fighting for a playoff spot after the 3rd game?

i didnt like the move then and i really dont like it now.
desperation move

Maybe, but it sure as **** wasn't the Vannett move that accomplished that. It was the Minkah deal which does appear to be a good one now. Though if a franchise QB falls to 20 it may not. But that doesn't seem likely considering the class.

I think when we traded for Vannett we had an inconsistent often injured McDonald and a green kid in Gentry. No one likes to trade draft picks but I really think renting Vannett was a move Kevin had to make at the time.

Yes, it was a mad scramble to add a TE, Colbert had no other choice. I remember one name that came up was Ricky Seals-Jones, who had been cut by the Cardinals. The Browns signed him early in Sept, Steelers traded for Vannett two weeks later. It was a bare cupboard, Colbert did the best he could.

UNLESS a hell of a good TE is there and NO other BPA fits or is better, then draft but otherwise use BPA for draft.

Salute the nation

Yup Colbert had no choice. I guess if he went down to injury they would have cancelled the rest of their games?

Oh why not do what they ended up doing? Playing an OL at the TE position? After Vannett showed he wasn't worth the trade they started going with putting an OL at the TE position. It's ridiculous to think he had to trade for him.

Man the Broncos like their TEs. They have; Fant, Huermann, Jake Butt, a couple others and now Vannett. I remember thinking they had a surplus last year and could have been a trading partner when our TE situation got dire.
