Rooney: Steelers standing pat at QB heading into 2020

https://sports.yahoo.com/rooney-steelers-standing-pat-qb-212747346.html

I think this is stupid. No one knows what Ben's elbow is gonna do until he heats it up and start throwing. Until the Steelers know for sure, and FA worth his salt is going to be on a team. He could throw one pass and realize it isn't going to work out. Then we are left with Rudolph and Duck. Again.

Seems like the team is content with the direction of the recent season’s roster.
They historically have never made any big offseason moves. A lot of faith in the QB’s

I think Canada adds a great deal to the developement of the young QBs. Duck doesn't have the NFL arm and I'd definately look at other options. Paxton is an UNKNOWN to us fans as we never got to see him in action. His past is just that...... A past.

A lot can still happen even if to contradict what is being said today. I do know that they seem to be keeping all the eggs in the Roethlisberger basket. Paxton is a wildcard as being able to actually learn & time in the system could turn things around and don't forget Rednose. He has some "it" factor and maybe an off season away from the "knock out" will help.

We will see how it unfolds. But if they don't bring a vet in it is a huge fail. And I don't know about yinz but I am tired of off-season fails. It sets the team up for end of season fails.

One more thing which I think is pretty big.......................... Will Sherman be replaced????? He hasn't been relevant in quit some time with other teams and our WRs looked pedestrian as a group. Yes bright spots but still overall step backed. Sherman was a stop gap and let's get a move on happening with a new WR coach.

the one FA QB I'd like to see us go for is AJ McCarron. He's got the arm and size to be a starter. I'd guess he's better than Mason and Duck as well. Additionally, he's only 29.

I think they stand pat until they see Ben in training camp. no real reason to make a move till then.

They need a strong #2 or someone better than Duck, if Mason goes down again. McCarron would be a good choice. Cheap, better than Duck and could battle it out for the #2 spot.

I agree with you here but 'm always rooting for the underdog. I think Paxton outplays DUCK and takes #3 spot and pressures up. Maybe a laugh here but it could happen.

They put all their eggs in the back up QB basket by drafting Mason, they will never admit they made a wrong draft decision so red nose is the future of the franchise, end of story.

I don't see how they could possibly make any significant moves this off-season with the cap they have left over. We are already looking at at least three cap casualties now, we'd hafta sell the farm and the cows to even get a decent backup.

Naw...not worth it, roll the dice on Ben, hope that one of the youngin's wakes up and play ball.

They must trust Rudolph to elevate his game if this is the path they are taking, I honestly think he can with better play call and more experience and a longer leash to call audibles against the obvious pass rush

and if Ben's elbow doesn't heal and Mason proves he is not capable, we can hope for a top 5 pick. There is a lot of unknowns going into 2020 and QB is a big question mark.

I predicted in another thread that there would be no additional QBs added. I was right. They are enamored with Rudolph.

Rudolph has it. I like him a lot. Injuries derailed his ability to compete. First the concussion, then his shoulder. If he keeps progressing, I expect improvement into next year.

Bad cap year for us. We definitely need an upgrade over Duck at #3 QB. Rudolph may have some hope but I just don't see him as a long term starter.

A. People griping about Ducks arm... it graded out as average by almost every scout... people are spoiled by bens arm... duck is not different than Brady or Brees arm coming into the league... that doesn’t mean it will improve, but it certainly can

B. Rudolph still has a higher potential threshold than yinzernation gives him credit for. His first season starting was comparable to a lot of high end guys, and none of them had to put up with getting laid out, targeting his head, or being assaulted then called a racist for no reason.... I mean if people hadn’t already decided by the end of the 49r game he was a bust, maybe they would have noticed his high td% and low sack rate and that the dude not only chased down a dlineman that stole his helmet but also tried to keep playing with a ******* dislocated shoulder

Sort of is. If you sit on your hands and there is no to little options by training camp then you didn't plan too well.

then if Ben isn't healthy it is oh well we didn't know until late my bad!

You don't wait until the cupboard is empty.

Wish we would consider Hines for this position. He’d bring an element of toughness to that young group.

I'm all for Mason improving. We have been spoiled. Right now, I can't honestly say if Rudolph's issues were due to his being tentative, or due to a very restrictive game plan.

Over time, I suspect we'll see.

right. nobody knows. So what do you want them to do? Run out and sign a Free Agent right now? Well, they can't since FA doesn't open until the beginning of March. If the plan is to chase a FA, do you think it would be to wise to state their intentions to the public? Of course not. Rooney is doing exactly what executives do, answering questions and not telling us anything about the internal process. I have no doubt that they have weighed options and associated risks and have contingency plans in place. But, until the next MRI on Ben's elbow, until the next 6 weeks of rehab unfold, there is no reason to do or say anything other than "we support Ben."

Now, consider the alternative...in order to sign a veteran QB, there will have to be a lot of other moves made to make cap space. So, forget Bud, Hargrave, and any other of our own FA's. Forget getting other team's FA's. Even then, you aren't getting an elite QB.

I've been looking back at Ben's stats for his first 2-3 years. Despite the win percentage his stats were very Mason like. Any one stating that he was soooooo much better starting out than Mason is only considering wins and not completion percentage. Dont get me wrong Ben was our guy but had growth issues himself.

Not this again. Just looking at raw stats with no context means nothing.
