By G.Stryker SteelerNation.com Entering training camp, this is my projected depth chart: (Players in bold are projected to make the roster) LWR (X) Donte Moncrief, Diontae Johnson* Diontae Spencer SWR (Y) JuJu Smith-Schuster,* Ryan Switzer, Eli Rogers RWR (Z) James Washington* Johnny Holton, Tevin Jones, Trey Griffey Receivers lost:* Antonio Brown (Traded), Darrius Heyward-Bey (FA-currently […]

I tend to agree with your assessment here. I just hope the CFL kid Spencer, and Griffey gets a fair shake. Switzer costs nearly nothing or nothing at all to cut. Rogers has a cost to cut. I just want them to keep 6 best. JuJu, Moncreif, Washington, Johnson are all locks healthy. The final two should be up for grabs in my opinion. I don't know Holton or Jones, but best players make it.
P.S. there was a kid last year who was the darling of the early pre season last year. What was his name?

Marcus Tucker. He was killing it in the slot and played special teams. He got hurt the last week of preseason and was cut. He's in the CFL now.

Quadree Henderson flashed as well and he's currently on the Jets.

I also liked Damoun Patterson, and he's with the Pats.

This is also my depth chart entering camp. I think Spence will make waves, and I also think Washington has to fight to keep his job. He is far from a lock in my book after last year's production.

Nice write up Cope and you have a knack for explanation in regards to each player. I think Washington makes the team but is NOT a lock on starting. Switzerland / Roger, one or the other makes it but NOT both.

I agree Cope. Washington definitely has lots to prove but I think he gets the second round draft pass regardless. He seems to have done the right stuff in the off season. I don't think any way he gets cut for Rogers, Switzer and Spencer. He is 5 or 6.

Pretty much the starting depth chart I see also, though it may change quick. I personally believe that 6 make the 53 regardless. Who is the question. Washington will be on the roster, he just might not start. They won’t give out on a 2nd rounder in year 2. I really think Spencer is going to make some noise, and may push 10 or 17.

I think Moncrief is going to blow it up this year. Washington will be much improved also. Ben has a way of doing that for recievers

Absolutely right on how BEN makes the receiver better. Something A Clown forgot conveniently. Washington is only a uestion as to how much of a step up he will take. I think, as said, he has done all the right things so now he just needs to translate it to the field of play.

I think it was Coates that Bryant was defending his job to in regards to the player you couldn't remember Cope...............................oops wrong thread (on the podcast)

I remembered he was traded to Cleveland, but you're dead right about it being Coates!

I think Rogers has had his shots at the team. I am actually pulling for a surprise to bump him off the team. But, if he plays well, then welcome back. I am sure they will give him another shot at returning kicks but he wasn't very good when he tried before.

all the media guys are saying how good Diontae Johnson has looked. Yeah it's football in shorts, but they all say he quick and how well he runs routes.

If Moncrief blows it up I’m cool with trading Washington who could very well be 4th on the depth chart. As far as I know he doesn’t return kicks, so where is the value?

Did not like the Washington pick at all. Did like the Moncrief addition in free agency.

Let camp sort out who’s 2-3-4-5. Part of that is up to Ben and who he trusts.

Maybe he should start w/ changing that darn #13 jersey???

Ben doesn’t add speed or size or hands to the receiver, rather he complements them by allowing the receivers to capitalize on their assets with good Qb play.

Washington is not tall or fast. Last season his hands were poor. Ben can’t fix any of that. We shall see if a slimed down Washington helps.

Trade our 2nd round pick in his second season, before we really see what he can do.

Pass

Yup, if you are not tall, and not fast, you better run crisp routes and set up the defenders to get space. Wash couldn't do that last season.

Pass

Or don’t do it and get less value for later.

I do not see anything he does well to feature.

The rookie the Steelers drafted in round 3 is quicker. He runs better routes and had flashed good hands on camp.

I’d take a third round pick for Washington right
Now, wouldn’t you?

What has Washington done to prove he's worth a 3rd pick in a trade???

I would not. He did just as much in his rookie year as Brown and Hines did. Thankfully the Steelers didn't trade them in year 2.

We barely got a 3rd for AB...

And 43, I don't want to give up on Wash, but I haven's seen anything in his pro game to make me think he can play the position well. You guys are comparing him to Ward and AB's first year? Ward and AB didn't get anywhere near 500 snaps on O their rookie years. AB was a returner, and Ward was a gunner on ST.

What about Plaxico Burress...He was awful in his rookie season and he was too dumb.

And Plex was a Z only receiver who could get open, and make plays. I like your comparison, because it's nearly identical in their production. Though coming off his rookie year, I really liked Plex's size, speed, and catch radius. He had upside going into year 2. They both were not the best at creating separation their rookie years in short/intermediate routes. The only downside for Wash is he doesn't have that upside in God given talent. He has to improve though technique and film study. He's not going to get faster, taller, or longer. It can be done, and I want Wash to improve, I'm just not going to give him benefit of the doubt until he shows me what he can do on the field in a game that matters.
