The Steelers have signed their third-round selection, wide receiver Sammie Coates from the 2015 NFL Draft. Financial terms of the four-year deal were not disclosed.

Coates (6-1, 212), who was the 87th overall pick, played collegiately at Auburn. A three-year starter, Coates finished his Tiger career ranked 10th in school history with 1,757 receiving yards to go along with seven career 100-yard games and 13 touchdown catches.

Coates is the seventh of the Steelers’ eight draft selections from the 2015 NFL Draft to sign with the team

"Coates averaged 21.4 yards per catch during his career at Auburn and posted a whopping 54.1 yards on his seven TDs during Auburn’s run to the national title game in 2013."

Go Sammie!

I still can't believe we got this guy in the 3rd round. Rubbing my eyes... he was a late 1st, early 2nd round pick at a ton of pre-draft sites. I was completely shocked that they got him, even though I didn't think they'd go WR so early...but to get a 5 star prospect to add to the arsenal, friggin' awesome...

I wanna see him and martavis in the bunch formation, d-backs will be ******** their girdles

I was watching some more film on Coates today and he's probably not that ready. He was asked to do very simple things in Auburn's offense.

His triangle numbers are off the charts but he's not a "good" receiver yet. Raw. Young.

The more I watched the more I kept seeing Mike Wallace. Wallace was pretty one-dimensional in college and he took that about as far as he could in the pros. The differences are Coates is a tick slower (but not much) but Coates is much more physical and willing to play the tough man's game than Wallace. He'll play special teams. Hopefully he'll embrace more of the dirty work.

If that happens AFTER his first year, I can possibly see his 2nd through 4th years similar to Wallace's if given the same type of targets/opportunity. That's not going to happen if we continue to keep Wheaton/Bryant but it's still nice to have on the roster if either of those leave or stumble in their developments.

the drops dropped him. Very pleased so many teams were scared off by it that he fell to the 3rd round to us. A great steal. Hope he proves everyone wrong.

Ravens took a Featherstone also, just the "so-called" great Ozzie did so in the first

I tend to write off WRs for their first year... there are exceptions, but most take a year to get things together route and scheme wise.....

I like what he did in big games. Makes me think he will rise to the challenges. Also it is good that he is a physical WR, the potential is there for a fearsome threesome on the football field.

They said Bryant wasn't ready either but when given the chance to finally play, he lit things up. Let's hope Coates goes that same route.

I bet he catches more TD's than Lance Moore did

Bryant, Coates, Wheaton and even AB can all take the top off of any D out there. When we have those 4 on the field at the same time, teams will have a damn hard time covering them with Heath and Bell also on the field.

30 pts per game....easily....Keep #7 upright, buy some time, look downfield, someones open.....points will come...by the bunches....if we remain healthy and play mistake- free, I see no reason we cant score 30 per game. This could become the greatest show on.........****** grass.

Steelers go SEC SEC SEC first 3 rounds in draft

I like that

One thing I saw when I looked at Coats' tapes. He's built like TO. He also was a 3rd rounder. I'm hoping he ends up being that type of fast, physical receivers.

Coates has a lot to learn as a receiver because Auburn is a run heavy spread team. I still think he could see a good amount of playing time because of his blocking.

Wallace 39 784 20.1 with 7 TDs in his last year
Bryant 42 828 19.7 with 7 TDs in his last year
Coates 34 741 21.8 with 4 TDs in his last year

just for a statistical comparison

(Coates played one less game)

He really just needs to learn that fly route that Wallace used to run,

Exactly

We don't need him to be our #1 route running WR - just load him and let him fly! - give defenses something else to worry about

With no Bell, we're gonna need to come out throwing early, load up the 5 wide, *******!

I like the pick in the 3'rd round. This kid could see the field his rookie season just like Bryant did. I can easily see this kid as our #4 receiver behind AB.Bryant, and Wheaton. They will work on his concentration and route tree. I don't knwo what the hell it is but frick and frack (Tombert) seem to have the knak when it comes to finding receivers. Wish that translatted into other positions as well.

I brought that up earlier so I completely agree with you! Saw him play twice and that is the first thing that came to mind. He is big, physical, athletic, but clunky in a weird way - by that I mean he is not smooth.

From some of his other activities he sounds like a real well grounded kid as well as being a good pass catcher. I think the kid will turn out to be a huge benefit when exposed to the training at the professional level.

If he can return kicks & punts for now, we're good. Can't stand seeing our #1 WR doing that.

I think Coats may become our number two or number three guy eventually and Wheaton could be the number 4 guy. It would be nice to have three wides that could become the number one guy on another team on the field at the same time. AB is easily going to be the number one on nearly every team and will make it a contest on the others. Bryant is developing nicely and may take a big step this year and if Coats can bring what Bryant did last year he should be the number three guy this year. If not Wheaton make make a jump in play and either way that is a win for the good guys. We might actually see 4 wides and an empty backfield while Bell is out of the line up with all of the wides to one side to allow for a quick read, could be very tough to cover.

Our WR unit is the best in the NFL. We have it all. By picking Coates, I think the Steelers are getting ready to part ways with Wheaton. I kinda of like Wheaton as a slot WR, and kickoff return man. I'm not sure if Coates can do either. We have Archer, but he was failed experiment as a kickoff return man.

I am not as convinced as you that the Steelers are ready to dump Wheaton. They will likely have 6 wide outs on the team and I suspect will cut from the bottom of the depth chart. At the end of this years cut downs it may be time to decide who do you keep at wide out Wheaton or Archer, one is a possible 4th or better wide out the other a gimmick player. DHB is a very good special teamer but he maybe on the bubble as well if they happen to like some of the tight ends more. They could keep an extra tight end and one of the rookie wide outs on the roster and part ways with DHB and dri as they have limited involvement in the team. Wheaton seems to have more upside than both of the other two.
