Steelers Restructure Big Ben

The article says they shaved $20 million in restructures and another $15 million in cuts for a total of $35 million. If so, they must be looking to extend someone big or be a little active in FA. It also says a team source says that may not be all.

From the Trib:

"The downside of the restructure is that Roethlisberger faces a salary cap hit of at least $40 million in 2021."

Obviously the Steelers are trying to make one more SB run while Ben is QB but this continual restructuring and pushing out of cap hits just keeps the team treading water in an ever deepening pool of competition. I feel like Ben should have given the team some salary relief ala Brady with the Pats. He's made plenty of money and if he really wants to win a SB, he could pay it back a little so they can add some more pieces. At some point you gotta say "Enough!" I don't disagree with their strategy and sticking with Ben is realistically the only way they can stay competitive in the short term but hopefully this is the last time they restructure him and in 2022 both the team and Ben move on.

True for Ben but with the cap expected to go up at least $20 million, they are OK with that.

So much for the doom and gloom Madden GMs around here

The Steelers literally manage their cap this way every year and somehow field a competitive team nearly every season. With the cap space, you hope they have something in the works to improve the roster because they are losing some valuable (and other not valuable) depth pieces. It's like the Pens with Crosby and Malkin. Put talent on the team now and try to win and worry about the future later.

I've heard estimates with the new league deal now in place, that the cap is protected to go up to 240 million next year. That might explain the restructures.

Exactly. They keep their core players and work around them. The key is nailing down the right draft picks. We know which years we didn't do that and we suffered through some lesser seasons because of it. They've done a great job adding free agent's the last couple years to fill holes. Now they gotta deliver #7. Bet there will still be some miserable ***** on this board when that happens.

Would like to see them put together a contract for Dupree to free up more space this year.

We gotta thank the nflpa approving the new cba or the room and gloom would have been for real. The new cba allowed for full restructure of the contracts instead of that ****** 30% rule that existed

I think you've made enough money at your job as well. YOU should take a pay cut and give your employer a chance to bring in better skilled people......... Yeah, right.

I don't get the BEN should take cuts in pay and then the audacuty to be like t*mmyb*y. You do realize the cheateriots funneled money through TB12 health & fitness right? MONEY that didn't count against the cap but was directly from the team.

BEN has been said to have "QUIT" on his team yet he is doing all the right things as a leader should. His contract is what the STEELERS agreed to pay him and what he agreed to play for, it's not his responsibility to manage the cap for the team.

In a fantasy world what you are saying would be great but DON"T compare BEN ROETHLISBERGER to a cheating scoundrel, ever.

ive read anywhere between 20 -35 million in cap space. not sure who to believe.
regardless, i still think the doom and gloom is a reality.
we already lost a few of key guys, haven't signed any of our own that we need, (except tagged bud) but definitely kicked the can down the road.
until we acquire guys to replace the ones we lost and shore up our own, we got worse..............

I may not have been posting on this board very long but long enough to know better than to get into nasty arguments about sharing opinions.

No worries and no nasty, just pointing out a counter to your line of thinking. You say you've been around here long enough to know then you should realize it takes all opinions / attitudes / researches / lies / contradictory statements / thick sculler / knuckle daggers and many a many other sorts to keep this message board, STEELERNATION.COM to be the best message board on the planet.

even against all odds,....... The GERMANS never gave up even after they bombed Pearl Harbor. General Gearge Custer was defeated at the Little Bighorn but that didn't stop him from defending the Alamo. We as a NATION must come together and continue to discuss all aspects of our beloved STEELERS team.

Carry on and good day SIR.

i dont think ben should have taken less because nobody else does.(brady gets paid illegally and his wife is loaded) (brees probably has endorsements in the city that he wouldnt get if he left)
maybe ben knows that tomlin has had loaded teams in the past and couldnt win.

Yes, the roster would've been really hurt if they didn't move so quickly with the new CBA.

Brees seems to have been taking less for and few years and now a few more years.

Steelers have for years paid market value. Bell should have known this. I'm sure his agent told him as much. Ben has gotten paid as well as all of the Steeler's other upper echelon players.
