By CJ Lester SteelerNation.com   Here we are, one week removed from the 2020 NFL Draft. Everyone has had their gut reactions to a lot of NFL teams’ draft selections. Fans have screamed with excitement, fans have pouted, fans have scratched their heads, and some fans, rationally, would rather let time do the draft grading. […]

Martavis only weighed 211 lbs ......... but I think 5 lbs of that was weed stuffed inside his equipment......for breaktime

unfortunate waste of a career .... I liked the dude

If my memory serves me, Bryant was also known for iffy hands. Claypool is not. If Claypool is consistent and reliable in his career, that will go a long way.

Bryant made some great catches, only Bryant held Bryant back.He could have been an all pro.(Thinking of that sweet endzone flip) (Wasn't there an one handed cheatriot end zone catch too?)

No doubt he made some great catches. Unbelievable catches. But, he also had easy drops to go with them. I could be mistaken but I think that was one of his downfalls as well as smoking dope.

My take on the draft:

Claypool. I wanted one of the top tier RBs still on the board but....Claypool certainly has the measurable and was productive at a high level in college. Have read where he doesn't "play to his timed speed" so I guess we'll see. Overall seems like a solid pick with huge upside if the whole "playing speed" thing turns out to be nonsense.

Highsmith. Steelers need OLB depth and possible replacement for Bud. Seems like they are not sold on Ola or Skipper. Highsmith maybe has the best shot at a critical position if they let Bud walk next year. If nothing else he has to be an upgrade over Chick.

McFarland. My favorite pick in the draft and relieved some angst about passing on Dobbins and Akers in the second. This guy is electric in the open field. No one catches him in space. Plus his tape shows he's not afraid to go inside and can break tackles and make Yards after Contact.

Dotson. Didn't know anything about him but I really like what I read. The guy sounds like a beast and a mauler. Plus he's a lifelong Steelers fan. Good pick and great value in the late fourth.

Brooks. My least favorite pick - a Safety that runs a 4.64 40. I know, I know....some of us put too much emphasis on 40 times (guilty as charged) but in the NFL speed kills and cover guys with below average foot speed are a liability. Steelers seem to be planning on using him as a hybrid ILB/S type which may pan out but right now I see him as a potentially great ST player (which isn't bad value for the round in which he was picked)

Davis. The guy is really BIG. Steelers haven't had a great track record with DL prospects drafted late but he seems like he has a shot. Ya never know.

Overall a solid draft. Not as flashy as some that got more positive reviews but addressed needs and picked up some skilled players though I think we are still thin at ILB but as I mentioned above the FO seems to believe hybrid players are the way to go and we have some of those. Adding in the serious upgrade at FS with Minkah (which totally solidified the defense) and I give it a B+

Wouldn't shock me to see Davis just on the PS this year. That screams for our depth more than anything. When you see Brooks hit I think you will have some likes. he is fast enough for the hybrid S/LB position which is where I think he plays or should play IMO.

I think McFarland really was held back due to that high ankle sprain. Not easy playing on that, that is for sure. If he can stay healthy I think he will be a good complimentary spark plug type of back.I think big dot is going to impress just a matter of when over IF IMO. I read those reports about Claypool but it wasn't like his QB was a stud. I would imagine some of his separation comments was due to waiting for the ball then locating it. He had over 1000 yards I don't think he will have huge separation issues. With his vert/measurables I am sure he can high-point the ball and catch it even when covered.

Oh you Canadians I saw the term Mapletron being thrown around for Clay. Someone told me it was a Canadian reference.

Could you shed some light on this?

I'm hoping McFarland is a diamond in the rough because we really didn't need just another guy in our RB room. We needed a 3 down back. He is also "reported" to have attitude/immaturity issues. Hopefully, he will grow out of that real quick as well.

You would think Canada would have the inside on any character concerns. (The coach not country)

With the first pick, I wanted a WR with size, we got Claypool. That makes me happy. The nickname Mapletron is a combination of Megatron and Maple Syrup (a Canadian export). They like everything maple up there. Just put some syrup on those TDs!

Highsmith I was confused as hell. I wanted a OLB, and I'm surprised they picked one so high. Though after seeing his film, I am a bit more excited about the pick and his diverse pass rush moves. Since he ran a 4.4 in college, I think he'll transition well to coverage help when he drops, but I love the fact he's going to kill it on special teams coverage, and so is Mapletron!

I didn't think we needed a RB, and didn't think we'd draft one. I'm happy about securing McFarland though, his speed to wiggle ratio his high. Not as high as his ankle sprain last year, but I also thought changing OCs 'hamstrung' him as well. Hoping they try him at KR, if he does well, Whyte is off of the roster and hopefully placed on the PS.

Wanted a G in the worst way, and we got an All-American who was snubbed at the combine, because the commision can't find Louisiana Lafayette on a map! Dude has it. Looks like a more athletic Foster, and that is saying something.

AB was not a head scratcher for me. I live in Maryland, I went to games. He hits like Clark and makes plays on the ball. He's the $B I was waiting for to help with our ILB/SS/Slot depth. I will also say, if you're not high on him, watch his film. He plays much faster than his 4.6 time. Just watch him click and close on screens from 8-10 yards out.

Carlos Davis is a great guy. I don't really understand where he fits. Steelers needed a nose and drafted another 3 tech. We have a full team of 3-5 techs and the only 0 is Big Dan. We'll see if he tries to play there this year.

Overall, this was a draft for depth. 1 hole was G, the other was NT, but we don't play with a NT anymore. G was filled by Dotson. Everything else was gravy. Our RBs/OLBs/IOLs/WRs were upgraded with position flexibility and depth. All of them play ST, so that is a huge plus since we lost a lot of good ST players (Chick, Nix, BJ). 6th and 7th rounders are the biggest questions, but hopefully they can compete and carve out a role for themselves.
