The Steelers have converted $8.26M of LB Ryan Shazier’s 2018 base salary into a signing bonus, per source. Shazier, placed on PUP Wednesday, earns that money now. While there are no cap implications, it’s a great gesture by a first rate organization.

Classy move by the Rooney’s.

VERY true Ike and history shows this isn't a one time thing. The STEELERS organization has shown many a time their compassion for their players, from Rocky Bleir to Ryan Shazier and many in between.

Someone, I can't remember who, stated a few days ago that the Steelers were classy because they still were going to pay Shazier after the injury. I explained the Fifth Year Option and how they HAD to pay Ryan because of the injury. Then, I said,"but wait, they'll find a way to take care of him and show how classy they are." Glad to see they didn't disappoint.

The right thing to do and not unexpected from this organization. I would like to see the league create a rule by if a player is unable to participate from the start of the league's season to the completion of the championship game that the team pays the contract, but is relieved of the salary cap hit. The league could have an independent physician review the case so that no shenannigans take place er cough Patriots. If its a grey area situation an arbitration and perhaps only part of the salary cap is reimbursed. The 8 mil cap relief would be welcome and it doesn't effect Ryan in any way.

Ok I am missing something... if they had to pay him anyway what was the purpose of converting it to a signing bonus? Does he just gets it sooner? Thanks!!!

This why I love my @steelers family, they care about us more than football and Papa Dan Always showed us that we are apart of his family❤️ was there for me & my family when my wife got paralyzed less than a month after I married her @RyanShazier love u bro ✊

OK, Same cap hit, just getting Shazier his money now. I thought they had to maintain a minimum salary. I've never heard of an all signing bonus deal before.

Yep money is a lot more valuable at one time than spread out over time. I imagine this is especially true when dealing with medical trauma, trying to reshape your lifestyle in certain ways, and not knowing if your chosen career will be able to continue as planned. Maybe I'm misreading the situation but I'd imagine he has more freedom to think about his next moves now that he is taken care of up front

Sure when a money source stops for anyone they would have a sense of uneasiness.Like **** what do I do now.

Steelers put that immediate concern to rest.

And I would imagine there would be plenty of opportunities moving forward.

Scout. Followed by Position Coach. Followed by Coordinator. Then HC Ryan Shazier (Whereupon all of Steelers Nation across the globe will decide the "Feel Good" story is over and begin the chant familiar to all Steelers Head Coaches .... "Fire Shazier"!). Now THAT would be reshaping his life!

Cope I read earlier (don’t have the link, maybe DKSports) that Ryan’s signing bonus was 400k - 600k less than the total amount of the 5thbyear option. Would that leave him with the base veteran salary for a 5th year player (just under 800k)?

per Depot

The Steelers were likely able to restructure all but $458,000 of Shazier’s base salary due to his contract having split salary designations should he get injured. In a normal situation his base salary would only have been allowed to be brought down to $790,000.

I'd gladly accept 50/50. half the cap hit

I love the Steelers but this wasn't one-sided, SHAZ WAS GETTING ALL OF THAT MONEY THIS YEAR ANYWAY. They just freed up almost 8 mil in cap space by spreading it out. How many times has it been said this is a business.

They spread out zero dollars. It's a one year contract, and the Steelers can afford to carry it, and should. So it's off the books next year.

Doesnt affect the cap. Gives him money now vs. 1 check per game.

I don't see any way that this freed up cap space. Shazier was only under contract (5th year option) for this year. His cap hit is/was going to be the same no matter how the Steelers paid him. They could have "slow paid" him by giving him his game day checks as required. Instead, they converted as much as possible into a signing bonus and paid him upfront. Same cap hit as if they "slow paid" him. No savings.

Here is the bottom line Ryan Shazier will have to leave a shitload of football money on the table. But 8 mil is many times over what the average man makes in a lifetime. Plus he had his previous accrued seasons where he made cash. He will have access to their people for his rehab. Hopefully they can work something out where he can be a part of things. He has a lot of life to live.
