Steelers are great at drafting?

The talking heads STILL tell us how great the Steelers are at making draft picks, but is it even actually true? Heading into a 3rd, consecutive non-play off season, the on-the-field results are not pointing to us being a great drafting team. If we were then were is the talent? We should be re-stocked by now, or at least on our way, right? Are we? Let's take a look - and, yes, I know - it's too early to fully judge some classes but we can still get somewhat of a feel.

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/pit/draft.htm

1. Shazier - Impossible to say right now, but durability is a concern. He has missed virtually the entire season. And I also wonder about his big weight gain, of lean muscle right before the combine. If that was a product of something unnatural, he may not be a legit ILB NFL body, and may always have injury problems.

2. Tuitt. Too early to say one way or other. He isn't setting the world on fire, as he rarely makes the field.

3. Archer. A disappointment. Right after they drafted him, I was shocked they still didn't go CB and he was just too small. Then I watched highlights and though he could be something special. Now I think I was right with my first thought, and our lack of CB skills is hurting as like I said it would.

4. Bryant. Early signs say this was a good value for the 4th round.

5. Richardson. A bust. They wait until the 5th to address our biggest hole and they miss. Their arrogance on taking CBs late is killing us.

5. Johnson. Was allowed to be stolen off practice squad, Tomlin has shown he doesn't even know who we have on the team and who is not.

6. Zumwalt - put in IR

6. McCullers. A mountain of a man, has got some playing time, doubt he will pan out to be a starter.

7. Blanchflower. Not in league that I know of.

A week after the draft, I was very optimistic. (During the draft I was out of sorts, having never seeing the Shazier or Archer picks coming, and shocked that a CB wasn't taken until the 5th). I actually thought we'd be getting quality playing time from our top 3 picks, and, reality is, they have offered us virtually nothing this year. The brightest spot so far has been Bryant. To be honest we needed production from this draft in order for us to compete, and since we got almost nothing, we are losing to the likes of Jets and Bucs.

2013

1. Jones. Just not producing. For as high as they were on the guy, it's not gone well. Being hurt is one thing, but he was doing virtually nothing his first 2 years regardless.

2. Bell. Home run. Could be a cornerstone for a decade. I loved this pick and predicted he would become a top 5 back. He has.

3. Wheaton. Has shown flashes. Not there yet, but still could develop.

4. Shark. Always hurt, and I predicted that he would be - frame too small for the hitting he does. Bob Sanders without the few good years of Sanders.

4. Landry Jones. A complete waste of time and resources. Whoever made this pick is a moron.

5. Hawthorne - bust

6. Brown. Not good enough to make the roster.

6. Williams. Good value pick. Not a bad back up.

2012

1. DeCastro. Hasn't become the sure fire best OG in the league, as was projected, but has shown some flashes of being a solid OG.

2. Adams. A complete failure. How did they think this guys could play? He has never shown anything but sucking.

3. Spense. Major injury who now plays from time to time, but not very well.

4. Ta'amu. Waste of time.

5. Rainy. Bust

7. Clemons. bust

7. Paulson. Weak.

7. Frederick. Another late round CB miss. Shocker.

7. Beachum. He will never be a pro bowler, but for a 7th rounder, a nice pick up.

2011

1. Heyward. Solid.

2. Gilbert. Terrible.

3. Brown. Sucked badly.

4. Allen. Decent

5. Carter. Bad

6. Williams. Bad

7. Batch. Worthless.

2010

1. Pouncy. Injured a lot, but has seemingly came around.

2. Worilds. Finally got chance to shine, and surely isn't. Over all, a bad pick.

3. Sanders. Pretty nice pick.

4. Gibson. Terrible pick.

5. Scott. Bad

5. Butler. Stunk

5. Sylvester. Bum

6. Dwyer. Talented but head case and lazy.

6. Brown. Best pick on this list, easily. Immense value. Whoever pushed for him to be drafted should get a raise.

I am sorry guys. But if the Steelers are known to be great in the draft, nothing during the Tomlin era indicates that that is true. How long are we to accept such horrible decision making by this crew of clowns?

what we need is one more redundant thread on this redundancy.

They also tell us that we are a physical, smashmouth football team and have a tough defense. It's amazing that some of these guys ever played in the NFL and I question whether they even watch the game.

Johnson wasn't stolen off our practice squad, he was claimed off of waivers before we could add him to it.

Just thought i would toss this out there. The talking heads are just that. They have been chosen for fame, name recognition, and their photogenic traits. Most of these turkeys are following a script that was written by some producer who likely has as much football knowledge as knowledge about foreign affairs, military operations, or any other topic you would care to examine. We will routinely be called a smash mouth team when we have been anything but that for a long time, our defense will be called what ever and in many cases it is very far afield from reality. They will talk about number one picks making players great additions when in fact we have had a great many so so first rounders that have added very little to the team.

I believe someone went into depth about this in the Phill Simms thread a while ago, and thought it was a very well done post that is also very pertinent to this discussion as well. The networks are trying to sell advertising and that is all. I do not believe they give two ***** about accuracy or reality.

I think your expectations are a little high if Worilds is a bad pick and Adams and Gilbert are a compete failure and terrible pick.

But yes, the Steelers have not drafted well overall for many recent years.

Give POP a break. He's new so he missed the last 50 threads on this same exact topic.

Worilds has 22.5 sacks in nearly five full seasons. For a 2nd, that's like nothing. The fact we handed him $10M doesn't make him a good player.

Both Adams and Gilbert have been absolute turnstiles, repeatedly beaten, injured, and benched for each other. Both were failed picks because they were 2nds and neither has become a starting-caliber RT.

I thought OP was spot on for the most part with his draft eval.

It is time to show Colbert the door. And bring in a hungry younger version.

Such is life......................

Worilds was a back-up for much of career, it's not his fault the Steeler emphasize LB above all other positions. He did have a double digit sack season.

Gilbert and Adams are disappointments, especially Adams but they are still on the team and have contributed as starters this season. If you're handing out grades they get a C and a D. Limas Sweed and Scott Shields were F's.

They don't suck at drafting offensive skill players. That's for sure.

When? In college? High school?

2010 2.0 sacks
2011 3.0 sacks
2012 5.0 sacks
2013 8.0 sacks
2014 4.5 sacks

No, his season-high for sacks is 8. For his career as a starter, he has 20.5 sacks in 33 starts. That's way below what your #2 pick should net you.

Teams shoot higher with their #2 picks than "not an F." Neither Gilbert nor Adams is a competent starter, Adams especially.

We know our biggest weakness and unless we get a good free agent, it must be addressed in this draft. They must go CB, S in the first two rounds. Not BPA but BPA at the biggest area of need. They need to draft a little different and it is obvious.

Yea but Ben making all that money should play LB,CB and safety for good measure. Hell it is Ben's fault.

he's not making that much compared to alot of the
QB's in the nfl.

I was being sarcastic but yes when you compare it to Flacco, Ryan, Cutler he's not and that's truly a joke imo. We need to do the right thing this off season and please everyone, don't expect any hometown discount. That term is a joke. This will be his last contract so he wants to make a final cash in so don't expect anything under market value. Also keep in mind that this guy with a strong finish could end up wit close to 5000 yards passing and in the mid 30's in TD passes. He won't come cheap. So you either pay him or if you trade him, and you better demand a lot in return and expect bad QB play for a while.

yeah i caught the sarcasm, should've mentioned it.
I'm not a cap guru like a few here, but I think this is the season the cap is due to take a big leap, and I think we will be out from under Woodley's contract, Troy is due six million, that's not happening, Ike isn't due alot, but he's done. Ben's new deal should lower his cap hit too.

I've followed Dri Archer's career since High School, he is a home run hitter no doubt. I don't think it's his fault with production. If a offensive cordinator can't utilize his skill set thats on coaching staff. He has proved his self at each level of the game. He doesn't have negative yds, give hime mire chances, in slot and running back. Steelers didn't waste the pick, theyddon't know how to play the pick. Just give him the ball on a mors consistent basis and I bet hewill prove why he is a NFL Allstar... Not opinion thats a fact!!!!!! Florida Boy Steeler Nation GO!!###
