Even if costs them their first-round pick.

Maybe crazy, but as he points out, Brady has 22 TDs and 0 Ints - yes, zero Ints - vs. Tomlin:

Maybe he's onto something. Steelers re-sign David Johnson, the essence of a marginal player.

Patriots sign Stephon Gilmore, a very good-to-excellent CB.

If you can't beat 'em, learn from 'em.

Middle-of-the-night chatter that Garopollo has been traded. Cryptic posts on his Twitter and Instagram accounts appear to indicate it.

The Patriots are just too much.

****** took my idea, I posted that in the free agency thread

If we want to be like the *'s why don't we just start cheating and it doesn't matter what players we have?

I still say Tomlin is clueless on talent, picking one here and there does not get it. He is awful on FA's. I despise the Pats BUT they aren't afraid to go after new blood and let others go in a hart beat.

I'm leary of anyone the Pats would part with. They are a system based team with interchangeable parts. I'm not sure any of there single players other then Brady or Gronk are great. Browns are salivating over Garopolo. If he was a Saints backup. Remember Cassell???

The Steelers are going pay him $65M???

hahahahahahaha

Dreaming

“The Patriots kept trying to sign Malcolm Butler to a long-term extension and kept coming up empty – the underpaid hero of lowB repuS XLIX is looking for the moon and then some,” said Lombardi. “Who could blame him?”

The Patriots were presumably working on a long-term extension with Butler that was similar to the five-year, $65 million deal (including $40 million in bonuses and guarantees) that the Patriots gave to Gilmore on Thursday, the first day of NFL free agency. Why didn’t the Patriots just offer the same deal to Butler?

Malcolm Butler

Forgive me if this has been covered already, I haven't read all the posts since my last visit.

We need a CB...Butler is 27 and over the last few years has been a very good corner. In our recent games with him he has covered AB very well and seems to have that feistiness and aggressiveness that you want in a CB. If you are the Steelers why don't you make him an offer, maybe 5 years/50 Million range, 20 guaranteed, and if accepted just forfeit the #1 pick in the draft to the Pats. Round 1 draft picks are like 50-50 of every becoming a star player (I read that somewhere) and CB's are hard as hell to hit in round 1 when drafting or in any round (for the record we have really sucked at drafting them). I think we cover a definite need by adding a good CB to go with Burns and we don't run the risk of missing on a draft pick (i.e Jarvis Jones, Ziggy Hood). Unless there is something else in this situation I am missing. We have the cap room and we need a CB. I believe I heard Butler is not happy with NE because of the $$ they threw at Gillmore also.

Thoughts?

In our recent games with him he has covered AB very well and seems to have that feistiness and aggressiveness that you want in a CB. If you are the Steelers why don't you make him an offer, maybe 4-5 years/45 Million range and if accepted just forfeit the #1 pick in the draft to the Pats. NE already offered him a multiyear contract of 10M/Y AVG so your offer would be rejected in a heartbeat

I think Butler wants more than that and the Steelers think they would do better drafting a CB and getting him cheap his
first 4 to 5 years.

He's a RFA, they can keep him for a year if they want, he'll want $10M+ per year on a new contract

Malcolm Butler - DB - Patriots

Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald reports free agent CB Malcolm Butler "wants to make it work in New England."Howe adds Butler does not plan to hold out if he is forced to play the season under the first-round tender, which will pay $3.91 million.

All of this disputes a report from CSN New England's Mike Giardi, who said Butler wants out of Foxboro. Howe did say Stephone Gilmore's contract was a "gut punch" to Butler and the corner "has received interest from several teams." Whether it happens this year or next, this situation seems to be headed toward divorce.

Texans interested in Malcolm Butler

Yahoo Sports' Eric Edholm reports the Texans are interested in Patriots restricted free agent Malcolm Butler, and would be willing to trade a second-round pick.

Butler, Saints discussing contract

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports restricted free agent CB Malcolm Butler and the Saints have opened contract negotiations.

Rapoport adds the two sides "hope to strike a deal this week." There are not many other reasons for Butler to be visiting the Saints except to work on a deal, but this is notable nevertheless. The Saints would owe New England the No. 11 overall pick if the Patriots decline to match an offer sheet, but that is likely more than they are willing to pay. The two sides will likely try to work out a trade.

I'd trade our #30 and pay him 11-12 per. No guarantee our draft pick will pan out, and more than likely he won't be a starter from day one. I'm in the minority here on that for sure, although not sure why alot of people wanted to pay Hightower 10 million per when hes not a pass rusher or coverage guy.

define a lot

Coryea wants Butler - let him dream his dreams, where the Steelers have an extra $50M in cap space

Hightower at least was being mentioned by the Steelers, once

There's quite a few in the free agency thread that wanted him, a **** load of fans calling into the sports shows wanting him, and a few sports show hosts wanting him

You don't think Hightowers contract is going be around 50 or higher? I never said "I think Butler is coming here". I answers the threads topic, said I'd make that deal.

LB Dont'a Hightower is slated to make a call today: #Patriots, #Steelers or #Jets. Those involved expect he'll head home to NE. Stay tuned.

Couldn't agree more...drafting CBs in the NFL is difficult and few teams are good at it. Years back people here were drooling over Darques Dennard, Justin Gilbert, Trae Waynes, Kyle Fuller, etc They all haven't lived up to expectations, its a hard position to draft for. Butler addresses a need, you know what your getting, and yes you may have to spend some $$ (apparently his market is 11-12 million per). I don't want to remind everyone, but we have literally 2-3 years left of a franchise QB. Why waste his remaining years with a subpar secondary-defense.

He is definitely worth, in my mind, giving up the first round pick for. A low 1st round pick that you have no guarantees on how it will turn out. Realistically, how many rookie defensive players make a huge impact. The Steelers did great last year with getting solid production out of our first 3 picks (Burns, Davis, Hargrave). Honestly though if anyone thought all 3 would start and be as productive as they were you are probably lying. Kudos to the Steelers on that but you cant expect that kind of production every year.

Much rather pay Butler than Hightower.

Hightower resigned with NE. New Orleans might offer Butler a contract.

At this point if the Steelers can extend Tuitt, Villanueva, and Bell and bring in ONE free agent at CB I will call this a decent offseason.

I think they did have some decent mid-range money for a CB to replace and upgrade William Gay (and still have room to draft someone as well and have Golson back). But it just didn't work out in the market.

The bigger issue to me is still OLB. I'm glad Jarvis Jones is gone and he doesn't give the Steelers an easy way out on that position. Everyone knows Harrison can't play 1000 snaps this year, so what is the Steelers' plan exactly right now? Chickillo? Moates? At ROLB? Really? Doesn't seem good. And I'm afraid they are going to force a pass rusher in round 1 no matter what the ******* big board looks like when we pick.

And I suspect it could be a 2nd round graded guy that they will rush to the podium because they draft with the blinders on (at least it seems that way to me). I don't know who that is yet but I guarantee there will be a highly rated player that falls to us in round 1 and we just rush up with our favorite pass rusher on a piece of paper we probably wrote down in pen on April 20th.

And of course we'll talk about it and debate it for the next 4-5 years.... :-)
