Neither would say it at the time, but now that three weeks have passed, Sean Spence and Keith Butler concede Spence struggled in his 2017 Steelers debut Dec. 10 against the Baltimore Ravens.

“He (struggled) at first,” defensive coordinator Butler said, “but he's getting better.”

Said Spence of his first game back in the NFL after two months out of the league, compared to now: “A lot better. A LOT better. From Game 1 to Game 3 have been like night and day for me.”

Spence was signed Dec. 5 after Ryan Shazier's serious spinal injury, and five days later Spence started in place of Shazier at left inside linebacker.

The early results, Spence admits, were not good.

“Because I hadn't played,” said the 27-year-old who was released by the Indianapolis Colts on Oct. 2. “I knew the system well, but actually having to tackle someone for the first time on a Sunday night? It was pretty tough. And not having shoulder pads and a helmet on for two months, and then to put it on for the first time on a Sunday and in a huge rivalry game like that? It's pretty tough. But now I feel better. It showed me what I need to work on.”

Spence had just one assisted tackle in his first game back with the Steelers (he was property of the team from 2012-15) and that increased to four and eight total tackles (plus a sack) the ensuing two games.

Spence has settled in and is clearly the starter for the remainder of the season, particularly with Tyler Matakevich limited to special teams while he continues to recover from a shoulder injury. Although L.J. Fort is playing passing downs, Spence is entrenched on first and second downs (he played 78 percent of the Steelers' defensive snaps in Monday's win at Houston).

Spence is not as dynamic as Shazier (not many are), but the Steelers appear satisfied to ride with Spence in the postseason.

“At first, (Spence) struggled physically, and that is the thing that is going to happen to you when you come back and you've been out that long,” Butler said. “You don't all of sudden walk off of the street and play NFL football games. He's had to get used to it, and he'll get better and better each week.”

Hopefully he isn't a liability in the playoffs.

I think Im done with training camp reports. All they did was rave about Dirty Red's progress. Spence has looked terrible to me and they are getting gashed in the middle. still they are going with him. Did you see that goal line play last week. He had the guy completly stuck and the dude still almost scored. If Metakavich is worse than Spence how did he make the team.

"Dirty Red" has a shoulder problem I think? Evidently Spence is the best we have got this late in the season. On a positive note he is getting better and I can see that. Pretty sure ILB will be addressed in the off season. Can Fort be that guy?

Spence is still the fastest ILB on the roster, which means it is the closest we have to Shazier's speed. He's not Shazier, but a quick Mack ILB lets us do more things with blitzing and zone behind it. He has a sack last week. Just keep improving and don't be a liability.

Also with his one sack last week, in 3 games he is already more impactful that Mitchell this entire season. Sorry to keep bashing Mitchell, but it just infuriates me that he can't make plays, when he should be able to...

Spence may be the fastest ILB on the roster, but when he's out of position all of that speed means nothing.

Fort show a lot IMO. I would like to see him developed

Spence might actually be the slowest ILB we have on the team Cope. He ran a 4.71 at the combine before he destroyed his knee. He likely never recovered even that 4.71 speed after his knee was rebuilt and he sat for 2 years rehabbing. On paper, Fort is our fastest ILB. He ran a blazing 4.67, which isn't in the same zip code as Shazier. To be honest, all 4 of our present ILBs are about the same with Bince bringing up the rear in speed and agility. We just won't have the available explosiveness that Shazier gave us. It's unfortunate, but we have to find a way to deal with it. Moats was faster than all 4 coming out of college but with weight change and age, he obviously doesn't have the ability to play inside anymore.

I think Chickillo and Watt are faster, or had better combine times, and since Spence has been out of football for a while...

What do they have to do with out ILBs??

This is what I thought but I was told that he was off the injury report and relegated to STs. Well, it seems both are true but ...

...makes a lot more sense to me. . Red is a tackling machine, it makes sense to play him on rush downs if he's healthy.

You have swing tackles and guards that can play centre or even tackle in a pinch. For the life of me I cant understand why a guy like Chickiloo wouldnt up his value and opportunity by knowing the Ilb position and hit a catch weight between the two.

His positioning is improving each game. Had to knock off 2 months of rust.

And Kesler, he ran a 4.66 at his pro day. Dude is fast on film compared to the rest of our ILBs.

Not to get into a debate Cope, but Spence didn't run the 40 at the pro day. He opted to do the 3-cone and shuttle only. It doesn't matter though, he has the most experience in coverage of the players we have and there is really no difference in 40, 20 or 10 yard speed among our remaining ILBs, not names Shazier. If it were about replacing speed we'd be better to put Dupree out there at ILB. He has the best speed of any LB on our team BUT he lacks awareness and would get smoked in coverage, IMO.

I agree Dupree is our fastest current LB, but he's an OLB not an ILB. Spence does look more sudden and quicker on tape to me. I also like Tyler, because he is very good at anticipating the play and plays quicker because of his positioning, but Spence just looks fast on the field.

Yeah I like LJ.
He's iffy. He looks great but also out of position at times.
Overall, a positive player

I like Dirty Red.

But his strong suit is special teams at the moment.
I had really high hopes for him. Who knows? Maybe he will be ready to be on defense again when the time comes.
But Spence and Fort have looked more impactful

So I was flippin through these pics of a Make a wish teen at practice and he is standing next to Dirty Red. Kid was tall but I couldn't believe how small framed Metakavich looked. But any how I was looking up his height weight. I never knew he was essentially the consensus college defensive player of the year for 2015. So you are going to tell me that he cannot play as a situational run stopper. Like WTF. Who us coaching these guys. Olsavsky was Dirty Red 20 years ago. This isnt rocket science. Jeez.

Just let Heyward Bey okay ILB. That son of a biatch loves to hit people and plays with a nasty edge.

Olsavsky was Dirty Red 20 years ago

LOL....That he was. He's kind of a little dude...like 6' , DBS could put him in his back pocket and take him to lunch.

I had to go back and look it up

Tyler Matakevich
Height: 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m)
Weight: 235 lb (107 kg)

Jerry Olsavsky
Height: 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m)
Weight: 221 lb (100 kg)

Mystery solved in Tomlins weekly with Labriola. Tyler has a shoulder injury for most of the season that needs surgery (Im assuming dislocation) aggrivated (disslocated) the night Ryan was hurt. He is good for SP. Teams but cant play down to down linebacker.
