Can a rookie ( Sutton ), a cheap veteran corner on his 4th team ( Sensabaugh ), and an undrafted free agent ( Hilton ) on his 3rd team play prominent roles in the secondary for the 2017 season?

I'm not sure. But I am sure that Gay has slowed down, Cockrell has had a bad pre-season, and Golson, a former 2nd round pick is likely a cut player.

So we might have to roll with these three new Steelers. I'm not sure if they will be upgrades or not, or if they know the defense well enough not to make mistakes.

Geez, this is a very talented team with a known Achilles heel. If the coaches are forced to play this soft zone crap defense, and we get ripped by the better QB's as history shows we often do, I'm going to be pissed as this could be Ben's last season. This penny stock strategy for DB's in a passing league makes no sense to me.

We should have looked at trading for Darby from Buffalo...would have been an awesome trade. I bet Sutton starts the last pre-season game and will start by game 4 of the regular season.

If they play prominent rolls this season, we will be worse in the secondary than last year.

I disagree..Gay and Cockrell are mediocre and would not start for most teams. Cockrell could maybe start as a pure boundary/zone corner.

I think Sutton could turn into a contributing starter very soon and HILTON with his speed can easily match Gay. Hilton's mistakes would about equal Gay's mistakes of slowness. One BIG difference is HILTON WILL GET BETTER AS HE LEARNS........Will Gay get faster as the season progresses......Heck NO.

Salute the nation

Is SOS, save our ship or same old ****? If the latter, is it a reference to our secondary or threads re our secondary?

No one mention that Burns a first round pick has not looked as if he took leaps and bounds after year one. Is tackling skills are week and his playing the ball is not first round stuff.

Well he probably is our best CB.

Clearly Tomlins' db prowess and eye for talent is at work here. As we have seen in the past 5 years or so, Tomlin always has top talent and first class coached db's ready for the season and the top tier qb's that we will face. Hats off to Tomlin for assembling and coaching first rate secondary personnel. He should be awarded coach of the year already.

I just don't understand why over the last half decade we avoided upgrading through FA. You can draft one guy for an immediate impact and draft also for down the road. Putting all of your eggs into the draft basket year after year....after year....after year....so on and so on just hasn't worked. Now we are at the end of Ben's career and our CB's sucks just as bad as they did 5 or so years ago.

My comment was full of sarcasm. The fact is Tomlin cannot spot nfl caliber talent for db positions even though he was a db coach and supposed to be a db guru. Tomlin is highly over rated.

I have been down on Tomlin in the past. but I am not sure we can say he is highly overrated.

I think the Steelers have under-performed at times., and he has to share in that blame.

But he did get us to the AFC championship last year.

For me he is a good solid coach, at this time. Not great. Not overrated either........

By week 4, our CB lineup should be Burns, Sutton and Hilton.
Let them learn and progress.

I think it's a failure of defensive philosophy. The Steelers have sacrificed the defensive backfield in the name of outside pass rushers. You could do that in a league of five step dropbacks and downfield passes, but today's NFL has too many 3 step dropback quick 6-8 yard passes. It doesn't really matter if you have a pass rush or not on many pass plays. They also let the OL hold in the name of safety.

I would cut Gay and go with the young kids. His speed is gone and he will be a liability for us on defense. We don't know what we have with Sutton since he was hurt most of the preseason. We know he will be on the roster because of where he was drafted. Its possible that Golson gets a chance but he may very likely get cut next week. Not sure if we can stash him on the practice squad or not. There's no NFL tape on him and he really can't be counted on by anyone.

Go get him!

Steelers expected to make push for Joe Haden

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Steelers are considered the favorite to sign Haden when he’s eligible to join a new team at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday. Schefter’s colleague Josina Anderson also reports strong interest from Pittsburgh while Aditi Kinkhabwala of NFL Media reports “advocates” in the building including wideout Antonio Brown think Haden has plenty left in the tank.
