Some penalty info

I had a flash back when I saw #74 on the field and thought Willie Colon, who averaged a sack or penalty a game. Pouncey and DD were also flagged vs the Ravens.

You aren't thinking of Keomoto are you??? That guy got some of the most blatant head scratcher penalties ever. I think his first name was Chris or something like that. WhoAley MoAley

We've had a ton of penalties in Sept for the past few years. It gets better each month.

Fully agree and along with that, USUALLY the team becomes better and better. Sort of like getting in the grove of things................ Always wondered why it took them so long under this coaching staff.............

Juju is most penalized with 4 causing 3 stalled drives (no first down or score after the penalty)
Artie has 4, with one declined.
Hubbard as three penalties all resulting in stalled drives.

We're second in penalty yards. But opposing teams have gifted us by giving us the 5th most yards in return. Those huge PI calls helped.

Maybe the refs are calling our games tighter for some reason. It does make watching the game frustrating when there is a flag on every 3rd or 4th play. Although some of those personal fouls were certainly avoidable with some discipline (i.e. Shazier hitting a sliding QB).

Both of them. Colon and Kemo. Flag city.

I, typically, expect DB's to lead the team in penalties due to the ease of getting Defensive Holding and PI calls these days. I was surprised to see it was JuJu.

Still have to look at team penalties by type. I had the post typed up last night but closed the window without submitting the post, so have to go back and do it again.

The number of penalties isn't good, but the gross number doesn't bother me as much as how many (or what %) results in a stalled drive, or keeps an opponent's drive going.

I thought it was OL Ark,

They can hold, hands to face, chop block, false start, illegal formation, simulate the snap, trip, and be down field as an ineligible receiver.

That is a good point with Holding and FS most prevalent, but there are 5 of them that these get spread amongst and, while there are, technically, 4 DB's, the two CB are, I think, most likely to get called for the two biggies. Another thing to look at and I will check it out for the teams last year and so far this year.

Looks like we're both right. CBs and Ts have the most penalties. I'm sure tackles get called more for holding than any other position, since they have to stop pass rushers on the edge, so they are the easiest to see. Interestingly, Decastro did lead the league in penalties for guards last year. Artie Burns is up there as well:

That is a good site to fill in the bits I was going to add, although the Count against, there is the accepted penalties and mine are based on total penalties, even if declined. At that site you can choose by type of penalty and quite a bit of other stuff, I will just put where we rank based upon total penalties called, along with the number of stalled drives for some of the main penalties:

The stalled drives may overlap. For example, if there was a holding call on 1st down and a False start on the next play where no first down was gained afterwards, that would count as a stalled drive for each type of penalty, I think,

Off Holding ranked 25 and have 5 stalled drives. that puts us at 31st in the league for stalled drives due to Holding
False Start ranked 26th and have 3 stalled drives (20th)
Unnecessary Roughness ranked 25th. 1 stalled drive (we had FOUR in game 1...)
Def PI ranked 17th
Illegal Block above the Waist ranked 16th
Def Holding we only have 1.

one thing you can look at on that site is total penalties by team where it shows how many penalties they had and were the beneficiary of. For, fairly obvious reasons, I took a look at the *'s. Not as lopsided as I expected: 104 against, beneficiary of 130 in 2016. Just holding they committed 37 and were the beneficiary of 32. PI wasn't lopsided, either.

Def Holding...committed 9, beneficiary of.....17...
Unnecessary Roughness committed 3 Beneviciary of.....8

First, thank you guys for this marvelous break down of penalties. Amazing how much different this looks when layed out infront of you. The drive killers are the worst and we seem to have plenty of them. Sometimes two in one drive series that becomes to much to overcome. I too thought OL but as a single player your right it would be a DB.

Both of them..... also have SB rings as a starters...
Fully agree and that O'l saying "the sun shines on a dogs *** at least once" is VERY true to form. AMAZing how crappy OL we had for so many years YET stayed at the top of winning teams and inspite of the "Bruce".
