I'm not sure I would consider "starting for the Bills" as a sign of quality. Sure, they may have some good individual players, but they just had their first winning season in something like 8-10 years, I think.
Yeah, here's what you need to know about Urbik's "amazing" time with the Bills:
According to a review of NFL Players' Association contract records performed by ESPN, the Bills have apparently restructured the contract of guard Kraig Urbik, resulting in a sizeable reduction in his pay.
According to the NFLPA, Urbik was supposed to earn $2.65 million in 2015 from the four-year, $14.6 million contract extension he signed in late 2012 that tied him to the Bills through 2016.
Urbik was thought to be a logical target for the Bills to cut this year as a way to save money on their salary cap (he counted $3.75 million). Now he will earn $1.075 million in base salary this year, should he make the team, and his cap number has at least been lowered to $2.2 million.
Urbik had a poor 2013 season, and going into 2014 he was not a starter for coach Doug Marrone. He made the team out of training camp at St. John Fisher College, but as a backup behind starters Erik Pears and Chris Williams.
When Williams went on season-ending injured reserve after Week 3, rookie fifth-round pick Cyril Richardson got the starting nod ahead of Urbik. However, he struggled mightily, and Marrone had no choice but to turn to Urbik who started the final nine games.
He'll be a backup this year, if he even makes it out of the preseason. And yes, the Bills had their first winning season in 10 years. I remember some people touting the fact that Urbik went on to play for the Bills as proof that the Steelers couldn't develop talent. He was a ****** 3rd round pick.
