Given BigApple's commentary about Roethlisberger never being the "top" QB in a given season and that meaning he wasn't all that great. (Yes, he sort of backpedaled and stated later, "Well, I suppose he'll get into the H.O.F., but really, he's never been dominant!" or something to that effect.)
I understand that argument, and I understand that folks (often folks right here on the nation) tend to gloss over just how good Roethlisberger is. So I decided to go ahead and compile, for your edification and concise guide to Roethlisberger's extraordinary dominance over his career - He still has 4 to 5 years potentially...
Passes Completed: 3476. Roethlisberger ranks 13th all time. Next year he'll pass Kerry Collins and Fran Tarkenton.
Before his career ends he'll surpass Drew Bledsoe, Warren Moon and John Elway.
Completion %: 64.1 Roethlisberger ranks 11th all time.
Yard Per Attempt: 7.9 Roethlisberger currently ranks 8th all time. What is particularly impressive here is that despite his high number of passes completed, and his completion percentage, Roethlisberger, throws downfield. A spectacular combination. Unlike another QB who averages a full half yard less than Roethlisberger per attempt.
Gross Yards: 42,995 Roethlisberger currently ranks 13 all time in gross yards. This comes as no surprise when you look at his other cumulative stats. When you have one of the most accurate passers who happens to throw the longest ball over the span of his career, you would expect him to be in the top tier of QBs in terms of yards all time as well. Next season Roethlisberger will pass Dan Fouts, Drew Bledsoe and likely Vinny Testaverde. He will undoubtedly pass John Elway before his career is over.
Touchdowns: 272. Roethlisberger currently ranks 14th all time. Next year he will almost immediately pass by Joe Montana and Vinny. By the end of the year he may catch Johnny Unitas. John Elway and Fran Tarkenton are on the horizon later in Roethlisberger's career.
It is safe to assume that when he does retire, Ben will be safely entrenched inside the top 10 all time in several of these categories. Including Touchdowns, Yards, Yards Per Attempt, and Passes Completed.
He will have at least 2 Superbowl victories, perhaps more. It is likely he will have remained with one team throughout his career. Honestly I find it hard to comprehend how any logical fan can look at Roethlisberger's body of work over the long term and not be completely astonished at his consistency and absolute brilliance.
