So, if Tannehill is worth $96 million

And some people think Ben's last extension was to much. Go figure.

It is a simple thing really. If that is the best you can get it is worth what it takes to keep. In some cases teams have been spending low and now have to spend a certain amount on their players there will be some crazy spending till it balances out in a year or two.

Is it worth it?

Is it worth it?

Time will tell. I only think there are a few folks worth the top dollar paid. For example Marino and Barry Sanders obviously the best at their particular skill set but in my mind they were not worth what they were paid. Their high salaries seemed to keep teems from bringing a truly competitive team to the field as neither produced championships. Another great example although pre-salary cap was Archie Manning who was paid many times what Bradshaw was but never won a championship and was often considered to be better than Terry by most people other than us yinzers. Sometimes it is not worth it.

Also one has to consider how many elite players there are at quarterback at any one time. Five, ten, there are still going to be 22 teams in a bidding war at minimum for what is left even though the talent may not be worth what is paid it might still be the best available.

if I were paying that, it'd be too rich for me for Tannehill
though considering the **** shows they've trotted out since Marino...

They obviously think he's better than their chances in the draft if someone more desperate pays more, and I would have to agree

Wonder how dolphins fans feel about it. Glad I'm not one of 'em!

he might be better than flacco

Teams will pay a ton of cash for an above average QB. He is getting to that point. Heck, look at what Cleveland has been doing at QB and that is the main reason they continue to suck after all these years and all of their top draft picks. We are very fortunate to have Ben for 5 more years. I sure hope we can land a good QB prospect in 2 to 3 years to start learning from the big guy.

According to today's NFL standards both Ben and AB are underpaid. AB big time and Ben could have gotten much more elsewhere. Ben signed for far less than what he could have gotten on the open market. We should feel blessed that we have an elite QB at 100 mil and maybe the best receiver in the NFL for a very modest contract. Yes, if guys like Tannehill and Dalton are getting close to what Ben signed for we are damn fortunate.

Being based 30 miles north of Miami I see Tannehill play. He has limited pocket presence and is a terrible deep ball thrower. He's an okay game manager type who can run a bit.

Any team that gives a non franchise level QB this type of contract dooms themselves for mediocrity, and prevents improving the team via free agency.

How do you know they don't have a jim Miller waiting in the wings of a departing O'Donnell?

Ben is signed and happy with his contract so this really has no effect on us, but luck, rivers and others are going to demand big cap busting bucks now. Glad we got Ben locked up when we did.

I knew that 45 million was agent bullshit. I now hear the real number is 21 million.

Frame of reference: Kaepernick got 26 million. I know it says 61 million but that is a bullshit number. Flacco got 29 million. Rogers got 54 million. So if they sent 45 million they would paying him closer a SB willing QB that is the best in the league rather than the middle of the road starter that he actually is. Even 21 million is high but I guess they see something that I don't.

Well, it seems the going rate these days for a starting QB is about $20 million a year. Tannehill's contract extension (5 years, 96 million) is below that number. Also, the Dolphins were smart to get this done now before Luck and Wilson completely shatter that salary curve.

The $45 Million in guaranteed money isn't bad either...It can be looked at a couple ways:

1) That's $9 Million a year guaranteed...or
2) $20 for 2.5 years and you can get rid of the guy if you want.

The Dolphins are no doubt aware of Tannehill's limitations, so they can draft a guy next year if they want and let him sit and learn/develop. Smart move IMO

Career 48 1,029 1,662 61.9 11,252 6.77 63 80 42 15 -- 84.0
He isn't a chump and he is trending upward. 4000 yards 27 TD's and 12 INTs last year. I just think the huge money is coming a tad early now. It used to be a over inflated rookie contract, you played it out and if you did good, you got a good contract. If you did great you got a great contract (like Ben). Now you get a not great rookie contract and an over inflated second contract because it is likely your biggest contract now. So they will walk or get franchised if you don't give it to them. You end up with guys like Tannehill and the Red Rocket in Cinci getting way too much for what they have done. Not even one playoff win. Both could be very good, but also could be journeymen. Some of the journeyman from the past (10 years ago) must throw up in their mouth when they see a contract like this.

Fair contract for a guy who is probably already in the top half of starting QBs and could improve a bit more. Considering that the actual guarantee is only about 21million and they can easily walk away after 3 years it's a solid deal. They could have waited, but this gives them cost assurance in case he improves and avoids a Flacco type forced overpay.
