Shazier's tackling

I'm sorry but not impressed with this guy. Sure he's fast but that's it. I just think this guy is too small to be playing in the middle.

He was the only bright spot on defense all night. You can't teach speed, he can always put on weight. He hasn't even played a full season worth of games yet.
He's already on his 2nd defensive coordinator in his 2nd year.
Did he miss some tackles? Yep, it's going to happen from time to time. He's still adjusting to the game.
I know some of us on here expect immediate all-pro play from some of the young guys.

He made a couple really nice plays. Please watch the game in a reasonably sober state, people, and don't start threads that are complete nonsense.

That's one thing that always puzzles me about Pittsburgh.... Other teams draft 1st rounders and they immediately begin making significant contributions.... our guys however take five years to figure it out. NE had 3 rookies on the O line last night and they had a no name back average 4.6 a carry and gave up one sack. It the Steelers 7 years to come up with an O line that doesn't suck ***. Cam Heyward is our best draft pick in years and even he took several years to finally start to become the player they thought he might be.

Shazier played a good game. He missed two tackles and in the one missed tackle he filled the gap and did all the right things....just missed the tackle. The real problem guys are in the secondary. Antwon Blake and Cortez Allen. Combined they missed 7 tackles....four for Blake and three for Allen. What's more concerning is Blake and his lack of effort on the field to tackle. It was very obvious he wasn't giving his best effort out there and considering he chosen over Boykin to play the slot db last night when the reason we drafted Boykin was because he excels in the slot was also a poor coaching decision too.

The defense as a unit needs to wrap up and tackle better. 14 missed tackles is just a piss poor effort.

I recall pretty good rookie years from Casey Hampton, Kendrell Bell, Polamalu, Ben Roethlisberger, Heath Miller. and Woodley, Pouncey. Now those guys were some time ago, but it goes to show you if you do hit on your number 1 for 5/7 years, youre gonna have a pretty good window..

Shazier is the least of our problems, by a large margin. He was around the ball plenty, made some nifty stops throughout the game. Sure, he's not Levon Kirkland, but will develop strength as the years go on. His m.o. is his speed, quickness and awareness. Why want to turn him into something he's not? He'll do just fine manning that spot next to Timmons, just hope he can stay healthy. As for the issues plaguing rest of our defense....where do you start?

Go watch that tape of him against Cleveland in game one last year. He is ridiculous. If he can stay healthy and really learn the nuances of the game he will be able to effect games all over the field. Watching him last night I think he looks poised to have a great year once the defense as a whole coems together. You can't just spot watch guys and make determinations about where they should be if you don't knwo the calls.

Use his shoulder to tackle? Everyone on here hated when HOF'er Troy tackled with his shoulder. You must wrap up.

Shazier's line for last night: 7 Total Tackles, 5 Solo Tackles, 2 Tackles For Loss ... Shazier and how he tackles are the least of our worries.

Focus more on the fact that between W. Allen, C. Allen, Gay, Mitchell, Blake, Golden and Thomas, there were ZERO passes defended recorded. THAT should not only have you worried, it should cause nightmares.

He'd be a good hybrid safety/LB role. Kinda similar to how Polamalu was used. He's bigger than Troy. I don't think as explosive and athletic however. Not knocking on Shazier's athletisicm. But he ain't no Troy. Should be employed in a similar role however

Wow, now that's a stat I did not know. I understand that Marsha is a 2 second release guy but you would think the law of averages would put a defender in the area of the pass once in a while.

Heyward struggled his first few years. But most guys start on this defense within two years of being drafted. So I have no idea who you are talking about. Harrison was a late bloomer but he wasn't ready. Almost every starter on this team started by his 2nd year. Some like Jones, Hood, and Shazier started their rookie years.

If you watched our D last night and came away with anger at the front 7, and not the back 4 (or 5 or whatever).. then I'm not sure I understand your thought process

As bad as the DB's were/are, the D line wasn't a whole helluva lot better. They recorded 1 sack and allowed 4.6 yards per to some scrap heap running back. Not the worst performance in the world until you consider the fact they were going against an offensive line on which 3 of the 5 starters were playing in their first ever NFL game. I may be mistaken, but I think I heard either Michaels or Collinsworth say they were all 4th round picks.

Front seven was going against 3 rookies and didn't make impact plays. If you came away feeling good that three rookies easily took care of them not sure about your thought process

I'm simply not a fan of Shazier and think that he's going to have trouble staying healthy. You better keep in mind that the Patriots had three rookies on that OL and that's something not likely that we will run up against again this year. We should have dominated. Guys like McClendon, Heyward and Tuitt and all the Linebackers including everyone's darling here Shazier. He's fast as I said but I just don't see him being a difference maker.

As for two different defensive coordinators that's rubbish. Butler is nothing more than a carbon copy of Lebeau. Nothing has changed. Of course I would think Lebeau would have had the sense to at least put a guy on Gronk every once in a while and not cover him on the goal line with Terrence Garvin.

Shazier will make some plays but like timmons is too weak down for down and is horrible in traffic or when engaged. There's a reason a nobody ran on us easily

Everyone was calling him a bust and Coach a genius after his first year.

This is where I was very upset. These guys were going up against rookies and I did not hear their names called for anything good all night. So they pay Heyward $10 mill but skimp on Beachum. Go figure.

is that all?
if thtas the case it isn't as bad as I thought it was.

still a ton of players watching and waiting...no team/gang tackling. kinder gentler.....
