Report: Ryan Shazier Walking as Rehab Progresses, 'Making Incredible Progress'
TIM DANIELS
FEBRUARY 04, 2018
Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier reportedly has a "regular walking routine" after he was released from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's Rehabilitation Institute on Thursday.

Adam Schefter of ESPN provided the update Sunday on the Steelers star's recovery from a spine injury. A source said Shazier is "making incredible progress."

Shazier suffered the injury on a tackle during the team's Dec. 4 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. He underwent spinal stabilization surgery two days later.

In early January, his father, Vernon Shazier, told WPXI the linebacker had regained feeling in his legs.

"He's making progress daily," Vernon Shazier said. "He's a long ways from the night when he was laying on the field."

The elder Shazier also said he believed his son would play football again: "Yes, yes I do. I Shalieve. I Shalieve."

Schefter noted the next three to six months are crucial to providing "a significant idea how much more function Shazier can regain."

That certainly is great news. I just don’t want to see him attempt to play again. The risk is just not worth it. At least now he can have a normal life so why take a risk with a surgically repaired spine?

I have no problem with him attempting it if he fully recovered. Thing is I have my doubts that he will ever be 100%. For him I am just happy if he isn't stuck in a wheelchair.

Yep! Agreed! I just do not see any NFL team ever clearing him to play. His position is all about hitting and would be a major risk to jeopardize his long term health.

Awesome. Ryan is a grinder...I won't be surprised by any of his progress.

As stated multiple times before, if the spinal contusion was the correct diagnosis, the chances he was going to be actually paralyzed was very remote from everything doctors said about that type of injury.... the surgery was simular to Manning or Letangs or any of several dozen pro sports players that had issues with spinal issues....

Its very likely this all was culminated from repeated poor tackling techniques... he ought to be the poster child for eliminating that issue...

Good to hear though....

That's awesome. I'm so happy for him. I hope he will reconsider the idea of playing for his future wellbeing.

Great news. Keep in mind, his walking therapy right now is aided with hand rails or in a pool with rails to keep the weight off his feet. Hopefully he'll be walking soon without aids.

#Shalieve!!

So happy that he is walking. If I were him I don't think I'd set foot on a football field again. There are a lot of places he could end up, coaching, broadcasting, whatever.

Do something like that Ryan, please.

Good news but not really any different than what we saw from the picture the other day. He can walk with help (using the bars on both sides of him). He isn't going for a walk down the street yet. Hopefully he will get there. Playing football again isn't even on the radar. Playing with his kids is and that's a good thing.

I wish he wouldn’t. I would love to have him, but just like I wanted Troy to retire BC dude took too many to the dome.

I mean realistically no way should he be able to play again. But Spence returned after I thought he was done. And I think his injury was potentially worse.

Still a wait and see. I don't think he will, but would love it if he came back. What a great come back story that would be.

Michele Tofoya made a report saying that he actually is not walking yet without the assistance of someone helping him or a walker. Shazier retweeted it saying that's 100% true. So not yet for walking.

Yeah, that report is false. Shazier is able to stand assisted and has some movement in his legs but he’s far from walking on his own and still may never do so. I’ll keep praying for this young man but he still needs a miracle to walk again.

It's a good thing he isn't constrained by the opinions of the ******* armchair neurologists on this board.

I wasn't confused. I knew exactly what it meant by stating Shazier was 'walking'. It means he's starting walking rehab.
