A full seven round mock. Yeah--things changes as players work out, get injured, or play well in the college all star games. This is a early 7 round mock


Round one NT Shelton - Powerfull player vs the run or pass. A rare 3 down NT. Our defense gave up 4.4 yards per rush, and doesn't have big ILB's. With the best pass rushers gone, and the best CB gone, this is a BPA that matches a secondary need.

Round three Safety Drummond - Polamalu and Mitchell had zero interceptions between them. The game has changed and a coverage play maker type is badly needed

Round seven P Roth - Yeah, this is a luxury pick, but Wing was shaky as a holder and ranked near last in net. This guy has a leg, forces fair catches, and drops them inside the 20.

What would this draft do? Help out a defense that lacks pass rushers, run stoppers, and coverage people. Only used one pick on offense.

Shelton would be a luxury pick with the McClendon and emerging McCullers combo, and the poor 4.4 average had more to do with Cam Thomas who was replaced with a better Tuitt. If Shelton slips past the 1st round which is possible given the lack of 1st round interest in nose tackles these days, then the Steelers might make a play, but he would have to prove at the Combine that he's a substantial upgrade over McClendon.

In between Steed and Hampton, the D was weak. The period post Hampton, our D struggled. We MUST have a dominant NT or our D will remain soft. I am all for drafting a monster NT even if we have to use a 1st round pick. Shelton sounds like he could be perfect.

I think most who pay attention would realize how key a monster NT is in this D. The drop off post Steed and prior to Hampton was obvious, as was the drop off post Hampton. If we put a beast in at NT, all of a sudden our DEs will appear much better (Tuitt and Heyward with a beast in between them would excell.) And, all of a sudden our ILBs would be much more effective. Yes, we still need help at CB and S but it ALL starts with that NT in this 3-4. Also, if we get a push up front, and the QB can't step up in the pocket, it will allow our OLBs to have a better shot at the QB as well. NT is totally key in this D (if it still is similar enough to what Dick ran).

Shelton is no Hampton. Unless he slides to us in the mid rounds anyone expecting him to be drafted early is in for a disappointment.

You consider the sixth-round McCullers to be a lock to be "causing fits int he middle" by 2016, but Shelton is a "developmental project"? Not sure I follow the logic. I've seen mixed reviews on Shelton, but to completely dismiss him as a prospect seems a little ridiculous.

I would say he is somewhere in the middle. Not the biggest priority if the value is equal regardless. But if he is the best value in 2, the pick wouldn't hurt my feelings.

If Shelton is this raw then, we are better off developing Mccullers many say entering camp and early on he was probably still in the 370's or high 360's this why John Mitchell strictly said he will only get reps in practice in the middle, he said once his conditioning improves then they would think about some reps at end.
My best guess is if he shows to camp right in the mid 350 range he will be much more agile and a 3 man front of 6"5 315 Heyward 6"7 350 Mccullers and 6"5 310 Tuitt will be extremely hard to run at. This way when Butler goes to a 4-3 he can sub back and forth Mclendon @ Mccullers at the NG spot and play Tuitt at the 3T spot with Heyward at LE and eithier a rook at RE or Worlids.

Our run D was pretty good since late November- AFCWCG.
Some of the big runs Jeramy Hill @ Turner had vs us were because they were vs a 2-4-5 and they ran sprint draws and the A gap was just to easy to get a easy 5 and then both backs are a load to bring back thus a few long runs.

I'm torn on the Shelton pick, I realize the importance of an immovable object at NT, but with the way the NFL is geared toward passing, how much will we use him? Will he be used vs the pass?

3-4 hybrid does not require ONE stud NT. Give me true pass rushers in the 1st and 3rd rounds.

Tom you know it was Haley who wanted him, he had both Charles @ Mxcluster in KC he somehow thought if he is faster than Charles and Dexter he will be a great weapon for his dink and dunk passes.
Once Dri gets to about 190 he should get more reps, use the same screens we used to use for fast Willie.
I can guarantee he pushed Colbert to take him in the 3rd when he was a 5th rnd projection.

Give me a player who will help the defense play better. If it is a nose tackle who can occupy double teams, generate pressure or allow the ends to rush more, take him. If it is a monster pass rusher at outside linebacker, go for it. I'm more interested in this defense adding the talent who can stop an opponent than demanding a certain position in a certain round. In my opinion, that is a recipe for a reach.

The logic is Shelton struggled against the type of interior linemen he would face in the NFL. We already know about McCullers and his potential. So why waste a pick on an unknown who hasn't clearly proven that he's better than what we already have?

Upside and potential. By this logic, why give Shazier a chance to start next year when he struggled against NFL-level competition when Spence and Williams have already proven to be effective. Clearly they are better options.
