Where Steelers' depth chart stands with Martavis Bryant back

Following the reinstatement of Martavis Bryant, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports Sammie Coates is "on notice" and competing for a job with Justin Hunter.

So now the Pittsburgh Steelers' offense starts to come into focus. Less than two days before the NFL draft, Pittsburgh has Martavis Bryant back on a "conditional" basis and can add a playmaker with one of its eight picks, too.

X receiver: Antonio Brown, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Cobi Hamilton.

The Steelers don't really have a backup for Brown, who's on the field every snap. But veteran Heyward-Bey can play every spot for Pittsburgh. Hamilton can also play a backup role -- he's not explosive but is dependable. Heyward-Bey is due $1.2 million, which isn't exorbitant for a core special teamer who makes the occasional big play.

F receiver (slot): Eli Rogers, Demarcus Ayers.

Rogers is entrenched as the starting slot receiver after finishing third on the team in catches (48) and yards (594). Maturity is a question after he missed a game for a disciplinary reason, but his instincts and pass-catching ability over the middle are obvious. Ayers can play on the outside. His quickness at 5-foot-9 makes him a fit at this spot. Ayers must battle for a roster spot but has reason to like his chances. He plays with an attitude the Steelers value.

Z receiver: Martavis Bryant, Justin Hunter, Sammie Coates.

Bryant won't be given the starting job entering training camp. But come Week 1, if he has earned trust, he'll be too good to keep off the field. Let's see if the Steelers double down and draft more receiver help.

That leaves the Coates-Hunter battle. And, yes, it's a battle. Coates is on notice after a shaky sophomore year. Despite playing through injuries, Coates must prove he can mentally fight through issues and produce on the field. Hunter, a former second-round pick because of his 6-4 frame matched with 4.4 40 speed, has underachieved as a pro. He also hasn't played with an established quarterback. He has one now.

Skill wise Coates would obviously be the man over Hunter. But I think with his problematic season. He might not even be a roster lock.

I don't know about that slash, hunter might have more skills

Hunter's a bad ***. like the article says, he's not played with a good QB before.

can add a playmaker

yessssssssssss

Cobi Hamilton is a practice squad guy and played last year due to Coates being hurt.

I see AB as an absolute lock (of course) and Bryant (barring anymore weed issues) and Rogers as close to locks
The rest are fighting for the remaining 2 or 3 spots (only 3 if Ayers shows enough to take over the PR duties)

DHB does a lot on special teams, but almost nothing as a WR....Coates or Hunter could take over the special team duties if they make the team
Hamilton made some plays last season but IMO right now he is behind the other 3 outside guys

Ayers has to show himself as a valuable target in the passing game - his ability to play slot and outside makes him more flexible than the others. He also needs to take the PR job away from AB...

It would be a surprise if they don't use at least a late round pick on a WR....so we will have to wait and see what that pick brings to the table....

should be a good battle come training camp. I hope my boy is healthy and brings his A game.....

Who put him on notice Fowler? same **** as "Shefter reports Big Ben wants traded" just bullshit to write a story. No way in hell I get rid of Sammie until I am sold that Bryant isn't going on a permanent vacation, and that's going to be a hell of a lot longer than the start of the season.

I thought Coates was a serviceable WR until he broke his fingers.

Earn your spot. Ain't no one getting a free pass. Earn your keep

Agreed.

Sammie has the tools to perform in a quality matter, but the guy lacks that....mindful ambition?

Ayers makes the roster and I hope like hell it's for more than receiver duty. PUNT RETURN would be a very good thing for Ayers and the STEELERS. Our current mighty Mo will be so tired, with Bryant attracting some coverage, Mo will be running touch downs all the time. AYERS steps in just to give Mo a break in PR duties, at the very least....................... Ayers will accell at PR duties.

Salute the nation

1 catch in the entire 2nd half of the regular season.

was it 6 or 9 yards?

Sammie is seriously marooned o the island of misfit toys and he needs a boatload of ******' Rudolfs and some dentist elves.
