Salary cap is expected to be at least $178 million, could exceed $179 million

With the new league year approaching, the NFL and NFL Players Association soon will be finalizing the salary cap number for 2018. In December, the NFL projected a range of $174.2 million to $178.1 million for the cap.

As often is the case, the actual salary cap likely will exceed those projections.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the cap will at least be $178 million. It also could exceed $179 million.

The specific number, generally driven by revenues in the prior years, ultimately becomes the product of negotiation between the NFL and NFLPA. Last year, the parties set the cap at $168 million.

The cap has been experiencing significant growth in recent years, even with a decline in TV ratings. With the Thursday night broadcast package spiking from $450 million to at least $550 million annually as of 2018, the increases likely will continue.

Yeah read that a few ago. I don't think it dramatically alters the Steelers funds, but could help shore up one need area with a little extra cash flow.

So if the Steelers initially thought ok we will bring in a S or ILBer, maybe now it is both. If it wasn't that already.

Just out of curiosity, what will happen when that "CAP" goes the other direction. If and when ratings keep falling sooner or later "TV" isn't going to pay the big bucks................will kr*ft finance the entire thing in trade for SBs.....wait, that is allready happening.............

Ratings were down and still the cap is increasing. I doubt a further decline would effect them too much.

Well depending on how much of a decline.

But you could always have the cap hover around the same, or decrease it.

I think the NFL already took some steps to insure it wouldn't continue too big of a slide. One of them will likely be less attention to the idiots taking a knee. The other is the Thursday contract giving a helping hand per the article.

I think the NFL is a long ways from folding, so the worst case is you have the filthy rich a little less filthy rich.

It will take more than 1 or 2 years of down ratings to shrink the cap. TV contracts run multiple years and usually become a bidding war when one opens.

inflation says that it will always go up

Looks like my projections were closer to the actual cap rise. I swear people just throw out numbers when projecting the cap instead of researching the yearly increases, and doing an accurate projection from that.

It's not difficult. Just simple subtraction...

I'm talking about when the TV CONTRACTS ARE RENEGOTIATED, TV ratings continue to fall until then.................THERE won't be near the money and teams will have to scramble to see who will take cuts. I know I'm talking theoretical for the ratings continual drop but the ratings have been falling for more than two years. I know the Crapernick thing was the BIGEST show of ratings drop but I think it started falling off slightly before that. The officiating is the original start. Maybe the NFL will fix some of the problems butr the "FIX" feeling many have is going to be hard to overcome. Cleaning up the catch rule and doing something about the "review" process. For those of you who think NFL football will be the behemoth it has been accustomed to, you will be in for a surprise as I think it has peaked out and the fan base is starting to waun away.

You're awesome and personally, I'm glad you are consistant in your number one trait as that keeps things simple, very simple.

Have another year in which things are handed to the cheateriots and YES, you will see ratings fall. As fans grow more accepting of the "FIX", ratings will fall. My synopsis is hyperthetical but just a look at what is possible. My question was of same value. IF the salary cap goes backwards how will teams handle such a thing. I know the answer but was just getting opinions from LEGITAMITE thinkers. Will it ever happen, who knows but it is a possibility. WHY do you think they no longer show the protesting players or the national anthem anymore...................... To try and curtail the ratings drop. I'm curious to see how the NFL will handle the future ratings and of course HOW WILL THEY camouflage the "FIX" with in the game. The public is wise, finally, and will not be so deceived.

MLB baseball has been doing great financially and most of their teams can't fill stadiums and operate at 1/3 capacity most of the season. Yet baseball contracts still keep going up? It's all TV revenue. They can play in an empty stadium, and they're still making bank.
