Finally, got around to finishing this.

Genesis is to see what it costs to get more than 5.5 sacks (Bud's sacks). I put in QB Hits, PDs and FFs, too, but only looked at the sack totals to get the list. The list is everyone that had 5.5 or more sacks in 2018.

I took the 2019 salary cap and position from Overthecap. If it is wrong there may be two reasons. Some of those I got several months ago and if they got a new contract since then, I didn't go back through everyone or it is a typo. I took out Randy Gregory's 2019 cap because the site said 155,000 or something like that and I don't think he is playing in 2019. If the position is wrong, blame OTC. Or Ark.

Some of the guys with lower caps are in their first few years, while some are in the twilight years (Wake and Suggs).

Some incredibly basic analysis.

There are 33 (excluding Long and Gregory) who have more sacks than Bud and a lower 2019 cap hit. Two of those will have 16m+ cap hits in 2020+. One that is higher in 2019, will have a $9m cap hit in 2020. I only happened to notice those three with pretty good disparities between their 2019 and 2020 cap hits. Some of the younger guys will have a big jump in their cap hit in 2020, too, but you are still looking at a great deal less than Bud's $9m.

Only 3 players making more than Bud in 2019 had 5.5 sacks.

The list includes 34DE's, ILB's etc. Narrowing it down to only those listed as OLB's (20). Bud is last on the list for Sacks and there are 12 ahead of him with more sacks and lower 2019 salary cap hits.

Ark, not saying that your analysis isn't accurate but a little misleading. And trust me I'm not a dud Dupree fan. BUT they already had a hole at ILB and they did not want to create another one as well. They retained Dupree for the season as they must believe he is better than Chickillo. Now while I agree rushing the passer is the yardstick here and most important ability it is not the only one. Maybe they feel he holds edge well and is good in coverage. I just feel like they thought they would use him as a one year stop gap and hope Ola panned out or draft next year. Kind of like Worilds a few years ago.

They kept Dupree because it was a 1 year guaranteed price tag for them. If he does well then maybe he gets another contract. if he can't get his **** together we have other players on the roster who are cheaper that we can use and Dupree walks next year.

this is Durpee's last year here.

He's either going to explode and price himself out of what we will pay him OR he'll underwhelm again and we'll go with cheaper talent for the same result.

I say this knowing that Durpee doesn't rush the QB every play, nor does he drop back in coverage nor does he set a solid edge very well.

Due to the many variables, I didn't want to get too deep into specific analysis either pro/con Dupree.

I think we kept Dupree because they knew what he can do and they did not want to risk any money on an unknown when they had other holes to fill. I like Bud and I am glad we kept him, but the price is too high. I don't think any of us think he is worth over $9m based upon what he has shown so far. As Supe notes below, he either explodes this year and we cannot afford him, or he stays below our expectations and is not worth keeping. I do think he would be worth keeping at a significantly lower price. Unfortunately, even relative average OLB's get contracts in the $9-10m range or more.

Several people here say that you can just take anyone and put them in there and do what Bud can do. I do not think that is true. You could read the chart to support that argument, I think.

You'd have to get reasonably lucky in the draft to pick the right guy (some of those are 3rd and 5th round picks, I think, so they got passed by several times and indicates that people taken before must not have produced where they have or they would be sitting behind Cam/Tuitt) or pay a **** ton of money for someone's second contract. Plus I only looked at last year's sack totals. The year before, Bud had 5 or so and I have no idea how many the others ahead of him in 2018 had in 2017. I'd guess quite of the higher priced players did.

One year is not a great sample size, but I think the chart does illustrate that to get the bigger sack totals, you do have to pay a lot. I'd rather keep bud this year and pay Watt those big bucks.

As fans, I also think we are stuck on the philosophy that the OLB MUST generate large sack numbers. I do not think putting someone else in that gets 7 sacks, necessarily, means we get 2 more sacks as a team because that position getting sacks may take sacks away from someone else on that side. With Bud on the field these last two years, we have been in tops (top 3 or 5) in sacks for the seasons. He got better at setting the edge on runs (IMLTHO) from the beginning of the season to the end and he is athletic enough to drop into coverage.

I don't know what contract they offered him that he wouldn't sign and kept the $9m. I would have guessed in the $6-$7m range, annually. Looks like he was willing to bet on himself for this season and see if he can hit the market to get more next year.

We ***** about Bud’s 9 mill cap hit. Sheldon Rankins 40 mill? That’s a bargain! Must be a typo.
Can you imagine having a player like Aaron Donald? His stats are sick.......41 QH.

Let’s hope we look back at this post a year from now and think Bud was a bargain for the year. I keep on thinking he has it in him.....last chance to prove it.

Oops, I guess there is a 3rd reason it could be wrong! Changed it to the correct number.

What if he is somewhere in-between? Wouldn't the Steelers offer him a cap friendly new contract?

Don't underestimate us using the transition tag just because it's available to us. He's already staring at his agents fax machine with a pen in hand, waiting. 6.5-9.5 sacks and this totally happens. LOL

Everyone looks at last year as 5.5 sacks for Bud Dupree. He had a safety which is as good or better than a sack and several offensive holding him calls. The holding is because he beat them and was headed for possible sack so that is near equal value to a sack.

Check this article out. I'm not totally Bud Dupree but he is a lot better than MOST here give him credit for. The STEELERS could do by far worse so I'm glad he is here, for this year.

I agree with this however you are missing one key point. If one of our young and healthy OLB's shows more in camp and something during the regular season, that will be the end for Dupree's career as a Steelers. But that player has to be better than Chickillo is.

Players tend to have better than average years in their contract year. So I think Bud will have a better than average season by his standards barring injury.
