I apologize for being so clueless, but I've haven't followed the team that closely since the fall because of a slew of problems in my personal life. Lost my grandpa and my mom got cancer.

Anyway, I know Ryan Shazier has been seriously injured and has a long road to recovery. The topic almost seems to be taboo, though. Is he coming back to play? I know not this year but maybe next year? Would there be a risk of reinjury?

I really hope if he doesn't play again, he stays on staff. He's a smart guy, an inspirational guy, and I can see him excelling as a coach.

After watching him "walk" out for the draft my humble opinion is no.

He shouldn't play again. He had a mid back fusion, those injuries usually take you out of most manual labor jobs for life, so I doubt football is a possibility, since it is a more rigorous and dangerous sport.

I think it would be a miracle if he were able to play again. And, I hope that miracle happens and he retires anyway. I certainly wouldn't risk re-injury no matter what the doctors told me.

No.

He isn't coming back.

Sadly I'm reminded of the Darryl Stingley incident. Since Ryan is not confined to a wheelchair I think he has already made significant progress. But no I don't think he'll be able to play ball again. I would like to see him be able to coach.

He should be happy as we all our that he is working hard to walk again, football should not even be a thought.

If it is part of his motivation for his rehab good on him. Not for me to say. From a realistic viewpoint very little to no chance.

I'm a Buckeyes fan and a Steelers fan. I'm definitely a fan of Ryan Shazier the player AND the man he has shown himself to be after this injury. That said, I'd rather not see Ryan play football again. Live a good life. Get married. Raise kids. Coach football if you'd like. Raise awareness about spinal injuries due to improper tackling ... Live as full a life as possible WITHOUT playing football. And God bless you Ryan.

Sorry to hear about your granddad and mom. I hope your mom is fighting a good battle and winning.

To see Ryan on that stage made me happy and shook me at the same time. Knowing he isn't wheelchair stricken, but realizing he probably will never be 100% again. Sad and by a miracle he does recover? Then as people said live your life, let us not risk fate twice. Steeler Nation wishes him nothing but the best. And still god speed on a recovery. We Shalieve.

It was crystal clear when they had to stabilize his spine with titanium rods/screws he wasn't coming back.

Shazier is a stud. Feel so bad for the kid, but he's strong and will forge ahead. As should we, and the Steelers.

I hope that he finds peace within himself to be able to NOT play or attempt to play the game. In the mean time if it's his motivation to get to that point and he achieves it,..........THAT is when he needs to say no, not this kid anymore. GODspeed and blessings your way Ryan.

Salute the nation

I find the whole situation perplexing. Since the incident the Steelers and Shazier himself were very secretive about his condition and his future. I actually held out hope it wasn't as bad as we may have thought, and that he would actually return. That changed when, as mentioned, I saw him "walk" out.

One thing that I still find odd though...did anyone else notice his legs still looked huge. They looked very fit and muscular in his slim fit suit. I find that puzzling. Atrophy sets in pretty quick if you're unable to get out of bed and walk.

Yes, noticed that.

He looks like he could suit up and take the field, but clearly he cant.

Rigorous rehab perhaps?

As far as the Steelers I think they can see and probably like us has a gut instinct he won't be back. But they won't say that to us or him. You don't want to crush his hopes and dreams. Let him keep pushing for that full recovery. As long as he wishes to do so.

his "walk" was assisted by his girlfriend and also by Goodell. That's a long ways from jogging, running, planting and turning, cutting, etc. even then, that injury would 100% be in his mind the first time he had to make a hit. every he-man on this board would think twice about doing that. I'd not risk being wheelchair bound for the rest of my life after going through the rigorous rehab he's doing. Every day he's not able to walk or run, he's also getting older. While it's absolutely wonderful that he's not in a wheelchair, his playing days are over. It's sad, but Ryan should "Shalieve" that he can affect football from the sidelines, and "Shalieve" that is where God wants him to be.

Rigorous rehab perhaps?

That's my point Slash. How is it he's able to rehab so hard when his back is so bad he can barely walk? I'm neither a pro athlete or Dr., but I had spinal fusion. I was walking normally in two days. He's obviously suffered nerve damage. It just baffles me how he would be able to work his legs that hard.

When I had my knee surgery, the first part of rehab included "electro-stimulation". Basically taping some nodes on top of the skin covering the muscles around my knee. They then would set the machine to send electric pulses at regular and changeable intervals. The pulses contracted the muscles without me having to do any actual "work". This was to help fight atrophy. Maybe they did something similar?

Meh people play after that, but he is at least a year or two getting to playing shape if he ever gets there.... not exactly something thats worth fighting to... just tell the league to put him in charge of their youth tacking education program

An excellent video on exactly what happened to Shazier.

He had no structural damage, therefore needed no emergency surgery.

What he had was severe compression of the spine resulting in bruising of the spinal cord ...known as a spinal contusion.

Having no structural damage you'd assume Shazier would be able to play again, but this doctor in his opinion thinks his playing days are over.
