Rules changes??????

OMFG!!!!! Make it stop!!!

How about these changes:

Illegal contact is only after 10 yards, not 5 (unless within the 10 yard line where it decreases to 5).
Any illegal contact flag is immediately reviewable and costs the coach nothing.
Any illegal hit to the head is immediately reviewable and costs the coach nothing. On review, the "contact to the head" cannot have been incidental to the hit. i.e. get rid of those ******* calls where a hit to the upper chest causes the offensive player's head to move forward and contact the defender's helmet and where the offensive player's own movement caused the hit to the head.

I would like to see them get rid of, or modify, the illegal man downfield penalty. I don't know what the "limit" is now, but it could be further downfield if the player is not actively blocking and they are still not an eligible receiver.

**** all that mess.

my rule(s)

1 for Goodell who has never played professional football to leave the game alone. It didn't need tweaking before you tweaked it.
2 for the NFL to stop getting butthurt over Steelers (Mel Blount, Hines Ward,James Harrison) and creating rules because of outstanding play
3 for the NFL to punish cheaters approximately, and not try to hide evidence by destroying or minimizing said evidence.

Laser pointing the football? What in the actual ****?! Is this real? No

And make every player an eligible receiver? Why? That is dangerous for a big mans knees

Legal eligible receivers set up as it is is a safety thing more than a procedural thing... could you imagine a center or guard breaking downfield as if they were running a route then blowing a guy trying to cover them up CAUSE IT WAS A RUN? lol that mayhem would get someone's neck snapped

It depends. Someone that big will be hard to take down. But say a defender just decides to missle into the knees; there's a potential Gronk style injury right there. These guys in the trenches are already heavy enough as is. Thats a lot of force on their joints to consider being a target for a QB

There are only three rules that need to be changed.

1) No headsets, QBs need to call their own plays. Professional players need to know their playbooks

2) Pass interference needs to be a 10 yard penalty. No more throwing uncatchable jump balls for 45 yard gains.

3) Define a catch as any time a player takes a pass and and the ball doesn't hit the ground till after the whistle.

The suggestion of adding extra points is silly. Football is not basketball where teams score at will. Football is about controlling the game. This author says it's a good thing that a 17 point lead would not be safe because it would only be a 2 possession game.

That's horrible. A 17 point lead should be safe. If you have a 17 point lead, you likely earned it and it should be hard to overcome. The other team shouldn't be able to string together a few big plays and win.

That would pretty much destroy the game and turn it into arena football.

What's next? Maybe they can spin a big Price is Right wheel and you can multiply the 6 pts per TD by whatever # you get on the wheel. A team can be losing 35-0 but they spin the wheel and get a 6 then score on a last play Hail Mary and win the game 36-35. That sure would be exciting!

I say clarify the catch ruling in the end zone. You catch it and its a TD. Fumble it all you want when you hit the ground. You already crossed the plane.

Here's how you fix the game.

Gameplay
1. Clearly define the catch.

2. Make 2 different pas interference penalties.
-Minor PI is 10 yards only OR 5 yards and replay down. Only an automatic first down if the penalty yards are enough for the first. Offense chooses.. This is for the touch fouls that may have hindered the receiver. The receiver MUST make a play on the ball or no call at all. No more getting touched then looking at a ref for a flag while the ball sails 10 yards overhead.

- Major PI is a spot foul and automatic first down. This is when the receiver is blatantly held or shoved. Again, the receiver must still make a play for the ball unless he is unable.

Both are reviewable.

Safety
1. Weight limits based on a combination of BMI and body fat % per position. Not so long ago, 300 lb players were rare. Players keep getting bigger and it is hurting the game. The blocking was so much better when OL were in the 290 range. Guys could move their feet.

Going by BMI and body fat would allow for the guy who is naturally huge. I don't know what the formula would be but the point would be to reduce the average weight at most positions, particularly OL, DL, RB, TE, and LB.

If we got back to 290 lb linemen, 200-220 lb backs and backers, and 180-200 lb DBs and WRs the game would be much better. A lot fewer injuries, not just a reduction in concussions, but i'd bet a bunch less ligament injuries as bodies would no longer be pushing the limits as much.

2. If a WR jumps for a catch, then he is down as soon as he hits the ground. If the DB isn't allowed to jump to hit him, then the WR should not be allowed to advance since the DB is forced to "let" him catch it.

3. Designate a "Middle" of the field for passing. This would pretty much be the defensive "box" from tackle to tackle and about 10 yards deep. Small WRs under a certain size are considered down by contact as soon as they catch the ball in this box. Why? Because if a LB isn't allowed to hit a WR then that WR should not be allowed to benefit and advance the ball further.

These players would be designated by their numbers. Small WRs get numbers in the teens and big WRs and TEs get numbers in the 80s and they are allowed to get hit so they are allowed to advance the ball over the middle.

This would cut down on the trend of sending tiny WRs over the middle. That is a big source of concussions because these guys have no business going in that area.

The "laser spotting" idea has some merit. I would certainly like to see some new tech used to help determine when a ball crosses the goal line.

The trouble is with 22 players on the field, one or more of them could easily block the goal line laser. And they you can have eye damage issues for players hit in the eye. However, a laser could nail where punts land on the sideline and determine if a player was out of bounds among other things.

The rest of the rule changes are a mess!

I recommend:

1 ) How about moving kickoff returns back 5 yards. Most of the people covering kicks only do it for a few seasons anyway. Fans like to see returns.

2 ) How about letting all 53 players active for games. Why the heck not?

3 ) Allow defensive players to swat field goals at the goal post ( Not sure if it's still legal ) on field goals only. It would really make field goals more interesting.

4 ) Allow any play to be red flagged, expect for when the whistle blew a play dead.

5 ) Add a replay official, ready in a private area to quickly review plays. this would shorten the time between challenges. Of course, the head official would have to agree with his calls, and has the right on close ones to determine for himself.

6 ) Increase fines for head shots or knee shots , but limit suspensions for
doing them.

I can see the P*t's 10 WR set now.

And I can see EVERY yellow flag in the stadium coming out the second ONE of them is creamed coming off the line.

Until the NFL can define a catch, we don't need to complicate the rules. BTW, didn't like any of the suggestions from the site, but there were some solid ones in this thread.

Wouldn't HAVE to be a laser, you could tag the ball so an alarm goes off if it crosses the goal, similar to what happens when someone walks out the door of a store without paying for something. Something of that nature.

The spotting of the ball would be a VERY easy thing to do. GPS tracker / magnetic strip / something along those lines. It would take the guess work out of the officials hands. MAYBE the NFL wants guess work, to help camouflage the controlling of the games..........
