This Thursday the Steelers will take on the Green Bay Packers in their second game of the preseason. As expected we won’t be seeing a quarterback dual between Ben Roethlisberger and Aaron Rodgers, seeing as Big Ben won’t see the field. The good news is Big Ben is still awesome, especially when you ask Coach […]

I hope it heats up enough that Rudolf TAKES the #2 and if not prior to the season then hopefully by week 6-8.

I hope if Rudolf shows being good enough that Coach Tomlin actually has the guts to advance him.

I thought Rudolph showed some nice things in his debut. He can hit a guy in stride, and showed decent accuracy. The velocity on his arm, my main concern looked okay, but he doesn't have Ben's arm for sure. He will need to watch his deep outs on the sidelines vs the quicker corner on breaks w/ball skills.

The most concerning thing for him is ball control and fumbles, which was a bit of an issue in college.

I hear he's doing well in camp. We'll see how he looks in pre-season game #2.

Guys, there is no way Rudolph will be Ben’s backup this season. That job is Landry Jones’s and barring injury, that’s where it will reside.
The team is not going to turn over this offense to a rookie in the event Ben gets hurt. Not this year! They know Jones can give them a chance to win if need be since he’s proven as much but they do not have that confidence in a rookie.
Next year will be Rudolph’s time to be Ben’s backup.

And none of this is a knock on Rudolph at all

I like him. I seem to remember nostalgically a young BR going what 15-1? My memory isnt what jt used to be but still.

This is probably reality but BEN R. Got his chance as a rookie. I won't rule anything out especially substitutions. My hope is if Rudolf is actually good enough that Tomlin actually has the courage to use him if the time arises. I hope Tomlin isn't stuck on Jone's just for the sake of not using a rookie.

I would not say there is no way. Landry Jones can regress when called upon. While*Landry can make really good throws at times, he*tends to do something disastrous when under duress.

If Ben went out with an injury, Tomlin likely plays Jones as its proven we can win with him,*but one major screw up, and he might give Rudolph a chance.*

We still have three more pre-season games to go and a ton of weekly practices during the season.

I think Rudolph is the type of QB who can shine with the first string OL.** Brown has had limited production under Landry Jones.* If Rudolph works well with Brown, our primary weapon AND he has command of the offense, I could see him, being the primary back up sometime in this season.*

Steeler Depot list Mason Rudolph at the top of the good list

Mason Rudolph’s Poise: It wasn’t always a perfect camp, especially at the beginning, but what was interesting about him that, as a rookie, the moment rarely seemed too big for him. He commanded the huddle, rarely had to reset the play, and aside from a couple bad snaps with Maurkice Pouncey – who he rarely worked with – was clean with the football. He wasn’t a Captain Checkdown, he pushed it downfield, showing enough velocity and impressive touch. Led both of his two minute drills for touchdowns. And had a nice debut against the Philadelphia Eagles, playing on the road under the lights for the first time. Confident but not arrogant.

They can list it as they wish, but Landry had a more consistent camp. (not so many INTs)

Landry Jones sitting this game against Green Bay tells you all you need to know re: his status as Ben's back-up. Nobody is supplanting him unless it's an injury IMO. And like has been said, that's not a knock on Mason.

Wait....the knock on Rudolph is he doesn't have Ben's throwing strength?

Now I love me some Ben but the one thing he does not, and never had is a deep ball throwing arm. There's never been a deep receiver Ben hasn't found a way to under throw. While many of those plays still result in big plays it's usually because a deep receiver will locate the ball and come back for it (shaking coverage in the process) and then turning back down field for more yards.......he very rarely is able to hit a WR down field in stride.

And Rudolph has less of an arm than Ben?

That pretty much puts the nail in the coffin for him ever being the heir apparent for Ben.

*cue fanboys pointing out the rare exceptions that Ben actually has hit a down field receiver in stride*

Tweek, Ben definitely has trouble hitting the deep pass in stride. It's not because of his arm strength, it's because he waits to long to throw it. He's not one for getting the ball out quickly, and usually waits to see a receiver open before throwing it.
