How in the world can a player have the football in one arm take about 3 steps and fall to the ground on one knee with a defender draped on his body; roll over and the ball pop into the air and be confirmed as an interception?

Were the refs interpreting that Brown never had a clear catch but kept the ball in play by not allowing the ball to touch the ground? So in other words if the defender had not caught the interception refs could have ruled an incomplete pass?

He had possession in my opinion. They said he didn't have possession which wouldve made their call correct had he been bobbling it. Cause obviously if you go down and are bobbling the ball and you flip it up into the air and someone catches it, it's an INT.

How they thought Brown didn't have possession is unreal.

It's the going to the ground part of a completed catch rule that must be in play. The refs thought he was "immediately" contacted and forced to the ground, or Brown went to the ground on his own, before becoming a runner. Therefore the ball was live and never hit the ground. It looked like to me, he was a runner, therefore completing the catch. Should have been down by contact.

Somehow the game has to be kept close to keep the viewer's interest....!!!!! He had possession and was down by contact, not a chance for an otherwise call UNLESS you're playing by current nfl rules........... (see first part of statement)

Pretty much how it went down. Brown had possession as far as I was concerned, and should have been down by knee. Somehow these blind refs saw it that the ball was moving around and flipped up without touching the ground, In this case would be an interception How can you look at the replay and say the ball was moving around. What a crock a ****,

Its a ridiculous extention of tge bad catch definition rules... if a player is going to the ground while making a reception he must maintain posession, but its well defined that once he has posession he is a runner and the ground may not cause a fumble or intereption... its an absurd decision that deserves scorn

I mentioned in another thread, it reminded me of the Polamalu pick in Indy in the 05 AFC playoffs.
He had possession took at least two steps, tackled, knee down so down by contact.

Can't find the video. Anyone have a link?

http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/video/1059224643841 Video plus explanation from Mike Pereira

If Periera says it was an interception afyer looking at it Id say good enough. I just think it is a mistake of rules. In that instant if you want to say incomplete cause he didnt hold the ball long enough ok. But it was the force of hitting the ground that caused the pop up. He was down by a contact. The play shouldnt continue.

It is without question one of the worst officiating calls in the NFL this season. Thankfully it didn't effect the outcome of the game but it was absolutely ridiculous that upon further review the end result was an INT!

.

To say that this was not a catch? Absurd. Preposterous. Ridiculous. Asinine.

That Mike Periera agrees with the call... does not change this even a bit. <facepalm> Ugh.

When I was a kid, I remember my Mom telling me (and my brother) that we could split a soda. After I drank the whole soda, my younger brother was rightfully ticked off. When my Mom asked me why I drank the whole thing... I said, "My half was on the bottom."

It didn't fly (needless to say).

This explaining away of an obvious "catch" comes from the same sort of illogical thinking. DOH!

.

The problem this causes is a receiver can catch a pass, go to the ground by tackle, and the defender can strip the ball and take it away and they can call it an interception because the ball is "live".

Why do we need your opinion on football talk if you are not watching the games anymore?

Because this is still a message board to talk Steelers.

Obviously he is still a fan, and maybe he will watch again. But that is his decision.

Doesn't mean we have to judge him in the process.

Look at that, the very definition of bandwagon. :)

He was clearly down by contact before the ball popped loose. You might call it an interception instead of a fumble because the ball didn't touch the ground, but as far as I'm concerned he was down.

With the ability of replay, this is the most amazing call I ever saw.

It's wrong., and the refs should be fined for making this type of mistake.

Those who think the NFL has an interest in helping teams behind in the game with flags thrown, or not throw or an amazing reversal might be right.

yeah, they shoould be demoted to only refereeing (sp) browns games LOL

AB was catching the ball while going to the ground. Once he lost control in the process of getting tackled it was never going to be a completion. Hence when the ball never got the ground and popped up into Wettle's hands it was an interception . Pretty easy call. :)
