Big Ben has done a ton for Steeler football over the years, the most, bar none, IMHO, and I have been a fan for over 40 years. Thank you, Ben!

But, it is now time for Ben, and some of our longer term vets, to spend more time with their families and enjoy their well earned money and some peaceful sunsets. The Steelers need to move on, and Ben and the old guard sticking around will just delay the inevitable. Let's get going on our rebuild, like the Steelers have always done when it's time. Can't hide from the future, rip the band aid off and let's get some fresh blood and new ideas going. Future is bright if we open the door.

So the Steelers either keep his contract where it is and purge the roster of many other players and replace them with minimum vets and young players or they sign him to an extension where he has to drop his cap to a MUCH lower number. I'd like to see it drop to a number that would create the same savings as if he retired.

If he comes back, in my head that also cements that the team doesn't believe in Mason moving forward. With that said, I build in some extra "bye" weeks for Ben next year because he physically did not hold up well over 16 games this year. This offense also better not go to the air only attack once November hits. It's been a huge reason why they've had big collapses with Ben at QB in 2020 and 2018.

I may be misremembering, but I believe the CBA has some language built in it about how a cap hit can only lower the first year by a certain percentage when you do an extension. Have to get an answer on that from one of the capologists around here. If true, I don't think they could lower his hit to the level we'd like to see it. Hell, just give him his roster bonus as the signing bonus on a three year contract, put some salaries in for the end two years of around $20M and be done with it.

sign him to a 2 year extension that should drop the cap hit so we can keep some guys

NO!
Swallow this hard jagged pill so it clears the books after this next season. No reason for any dead money/can kicking. IF Ben wants to come back, we need to eat this contract and piece meal together what we can.
ANY way this next season plays out is going to be disastrous because TooCoolForSchool Shades McGuillicutty is still the head coach.
I’ve already posted the scenario in another thread, but I’m hoping this sets up Shades, Colbert, and Ben walking out together after next season ends. Take our lumps this upcoming season and go wholesale organizational change the following with a better cap situation.

Can he retire and come back as a player/coach?

So what is Canada's scheme??? Cannot be worse than what we experience this year.

Easy to learn scheme. He's not interested in guys taking years to learn it. Based around presnap motion and misdirection. He'll use the personnel that he has rather than force things. NFL teams have been implementing elements of his scheme. His offensive philosophy is considered unique.

I think you're confusing last year with rules that were put into place before the new CBA was signed.

Canada aside if Ben comes back with Tomlin as HC expect to be in this exact spot next year with another 10-15 million in dead cash for 2022. Is that really what you all want?

Ben is done. We’ve seen his last two playoff performances of massive turnovers. We also saw on the bad snap play that he didn’t want to fall on the ball because he was afraid of getting hit. When your afraid of getting hit, it’s time to go. So for those reasons, management needs to clean house from him, Pouncey , Villanueva and Decastro and bite the bullet for the 2021 season and take a sub par regular season to get a high draft pick that can be used on our QB of the future and build a new.
