By: Brandon J. Wallace SteelerNation.com **   Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator since 2015, Keith Butler has been given a one-year contract. This announcement comes just days after reports came out that the team would retain the long-time Steelers coach. Butler has been on the team’s coaching staff for 18 years in total, and will look […]

SB here we come !

I think it lines up with TOMLIN 1 year deal remaining. Art Duece don't like firing so it lines up with letting the contract(s) expire. I can't tell you if Tomlin is leaving or not after this season but currently they haven't extended him yet and I believe his current contract expires at end of 2021 season or start of 2022 fiscal year.

Don't tease.

Honestly the D had so many injuries that it's hard to judge. I'm not a Butler fan, but I'm just sayin'.

yup - it is all lining up for a possible mass exodus after next season. Ben, Tomlin, GM, and the entire coaching staff. Maybe they can all go coach at Arkansas State together.

I'm only going out of O'l man memory and gut feeling but if they are going to extend him I think they do it around or durring training camp. So another reason to pay attention durring that time.

Ron, I hear what you are saying but I was real disappointed when they promoted him from within. I wanted outside franchise DC with fresh defensive scheme / ideas. I'm very tired of the ILB covering the opposing team's BEST wide receiver, a trait of this defense. I realize TOMLIN's hands are all over this but Butler caters to it.

LBs covering top WRs, 2 DLs getting doubled all game against the run, yeeeeyyyy tomlin's scheme for one more year while Muppet Butler stays shackled

Steelers have been doing a lot more short term deals with Assistant Coaches the last 4-5 years

LBs aren’t lined up on WRs as much as perceived. Watched a lot of tape.

Running cover-3 zone is going to have LBs in mismatches for every team. If you’re thinking our WRs are always covered by DBs you’re not paying close attention.

This past year more than ever when Bush/Dupree were healthy we ran more Cover-2 because Dupree/Watt were DEs that didn’t get into a 3-point stance. In that Defense—LBs cover underneath, what do you think the Steelers primary Defense was in 70s ??? The “Tampa-2” was the Steelers D 20 years before they did it.

Still.... you’re seeing those match ups occasionally because they are going to happen no matter what team you play against.

Why the attempt at history lesson? It has nothing to do with our current situation if the Steelers implemented the tampa 2 in the 70s.

Having Heyward and tuitt as the only true Dlinemen against 5 Olinemen when you are down to your 5th OLB who got picked a couple of weeks before against a great rushing team like the browns had this season is a recipe for disaster.

You have healthy proven against the run DL players like alualu and wormley sitting in the bench while Heyward, watt and tuitt have to deal with the OL. Against a team like that better force them to pass.

Spillane coming cold from injury? Yeah play him because he is an all pro while you sit Williamson who at least was decent against the run.

The defense was ill prepared against the matchup and that's on the coaches

I'm no professional football game analysist but I see our "D" giving ILB coverage to their BEST wide receiver more often than other games I've watched. Yes other teams do get matched but more consistantly our "D" gets matched that way and it seems more often and more when the game is on the line. It happens consistently, thier best WR against our ILB. Other teams find a way to float coverage matching their CB on their WR regardless of where he lines up or motions to.

Yes there are holes in my synopsis but our defensive scheme is susptable to this tactic more than other "Ds" that I watch closely for this scenario. It's a history of the Mike Tomlin Defense. Comparing to the 70's STEELERS is not a good comparison as that was a whole different era and passing / defending had whole different set of rules.

Two cents

2022 for Tomlin is a club option.

Gerry Dulac wrote that most assistants operate on one-year deals after their first two years with the teams.

It seems odd and I’d like to see what other teams do. Maybe this is another reason why we’re always looking for guys with connections to the team/city and never for any of the big time names.

I think Butler can do a good job, if Tomlin lets him run the D.

If Tomlin is running the defense why have a defensive coordinator? Take reasonability Tomlin for once, either you are the defensive coach or let someone else do their job.

Tomlin is a coach who gets around at practice, going to all of the position groups. He lets Butler run the show with the defense. At least this is how it's been at training camp. I'm sure Butler does a lot during the week with film, the game plan, and in defensive meetings. I know everyone always got bent out of shape about the Steelers being on Hard Knocks, but this is one reason why I really want them to be on it. I want to see what happens behind the scenes during camp and game prep.

Just saw this as well...Keith Butler and Dennis Allen (Saints) are the longest tenured DCs in the NFL (since 2015).
