I'm a trend guy, and I like to decipher moves and what their implications may lead to. We have a couple interesting things happen this week, and I think we are going to see some new wrinkles because of it. Now lets read between the lines:

1) Tyler Murphy was sent to the Practice Squad. I found this move very odd, mostly because Murphy was participating in Special teams, could back up at WR and in a pinch, be an emergency QB. It was also odd that a team rostering 5 WRs and 6 RBs would choose to keep the extra RB when Bell returned and drop Murphy, who had earned a hat on Sunday. Murphy was my choice to cut when Bryant returned in 2 weeks, but him being cut early was a bit odd. The quick answer was Murphy was stashed early in the season on the PS before other teams had a chance to grab him. Dropping a player late on a Wed is also tough for other teams to grab a player, because timing wise, it would mean picking up a player and dropping one of your rostered player after you've spent a full day instituting your game plan. Reading between the lines, the reason to drop Murphy opens up an opportunity for Sammy Coats. He may be performing so well in practices, that the team wants a look at him before Bryant returns in 2 weeks. This trend should mean Sammy should be suited up in his first game as a Steeler on Sunday. Smarter to do it now and see what you have in Coats, before Bryant returns and he's put back on the inactive list.

2) Cortez Allen's knee injury. I was happy to hear that Cortez practiced fully on Wed, and equally disappointed that he was limited yesterday due to knee swelling. The trend here is that his knee is not responding to action, and like last week when he was inactive on game day, I expect the same this week.

3) Since the steelers dropped a WR from the roster to bring back Bell, who will be cut when Bryant returns? The Steelers employ 6 RBs now that Bell has returned. I expect one of them to be inactive on Sunday, and it will probably be Todman. He's the odd man out since Williams and Bell will be competing for carries. When Bryant returns the cut will have to come from the offensive side, and specifically from the glut of RBs on the roster. I know many are calling for Archer's head, but he's too versatile to cut now (KR1, PR2, WR5, RB?). His value is not evident in the warmer months, but as kick returning becomes an option in Nov/Dec/Jan, he can show his value. This leaves only 2 options to cut when Bryant returns: Todman or Nix. I don't understand the need for 2 FBs, and I also don't understand the need for 4 HBs, so something has to give, and it will be one of these 2 players. Watch and see the snaps they receive in the next 2 weeks, because it will determine which one stays, and which one goes.

4) Cody Wallace. Cody has done a fine job replacing Pouncey these past couple games. It's a great trend since he's only started a handful of games in his career. This week is going to be his biggest test. We're going up against a talented front 4 that is highly athletic. Cody is not Pouncey when it comes to matching athleticism with athleticism. He will be tested early and often. Self scouting dictates that Wallace is the weak link on the line and should be attacked. Look for the Steelers to combo block with him on pass plays, and even for the RBs and TEs to lend a hand to give Ben the time he needs to make plays. Otherwise, Ben may not have a lot of time to open those deep routes he threw so beautifully last week.

5) Will Shazier play this week? Shazier was diagnosed publicly this week with a 'stinger'. A stinger is a nerve contusion to an arm nerve caused by a severe strike to the shoulder/neck area. They usually happen quickly and only last a couple minutes. Rarely do they last days, but they can. I was heartened to hear that they held him out the remainder of the game when he got his stinger on Sunday. Wed he was held out again, I assumed it was to rest him from his monster game so he'd be 100% for Thursday. Thursday came and went, and still no practice. Now I'm concerned. If it's a stinger, then it's a severe stinger. Today is the cut off, if he practices today, this is a moot issue, and I expect him to be 100% on Sunday. If he doesn't practice today, his injury is more serious than a stinger, and we could be talking about nerve damage, or a different shoulder injury. I hate to speculate injury severity, so I'm hoping he practices today.

6) the other injuries and how they trend: McCullers has a knee injury and was held out yesterday since his knee swelled. This is not a good sign, since he's a big man, and puts a lot of work on those knees. I'd expect him to sit on Sunday. Heyward participated partially with an elbow injury. Even if he's a little banged up, I expect Heyward to be playing on Sunday. An Elbow won't keep him out if it's not severe. Wheaton showing up with a chest injury was a surprise, and could lead to some serious changes in the offense if he doesn't play. First off, to get a chest injury, you either have to land on the football after catching it (knocking the wind out of yourself), but that only lasts minutes. The other option is you have to get hit in the chest with a helmet. If the latter happened, I'm hoping it's only a bone bruise. Painful, but not detrimental, which means he would play Sunday. If he's held out of Sunday's game, it now means our WRs would be AB, DHB, and Coats. Archer can fill in as a 4th, but this is now an inexperienced group of receivers if he can't go. If he doesn't go, I expect to see Bell to be split out as a receiver in 2WR and 3WR sets.

Yeah, this will be a big week for Cody Wallace. I'm not sure he can block those guys.

This is the second year that Pouncey has been replaced by a no name, and to be honest I see little drop off in the run or pass blocking.

Pouncey offers the ability to pull that Wallace does not. Granted, but I think Pouncey is a bit over rated. He's also an expensive player who's been injured too often and had some off the field moments on twitter.

The Steelers have ran it well without Bell, and pass protected well without Pouncey. The truth is our tackles are bookends, and our guards decent veterans. As such we can stick in a journeyman center. This has been proven.

Wallace is a gamer and offers some fight.

The entire OL is getting a test vs the Rams front four, not just Wallace. If the Tackles can hold up, Bell can be left in the back field as a blocker / safety value type of receiver, helping the interior players out.

Haley would be wise to run it a bit. Once successful Haley could mix in play action for big plays to Miller or the WR's

Haley should mix in some screens ( WR And RB ) and even call a draw to keep the Rams pass rush from pinning back their ears to rush too. Just no silly play on 3rd down please.

There was a severe drop off in the run game the first time Pouncey was injured. Also the guys around him were young when the injury happened. Now they are all grizzled vets. Much more ready to produce without a key component such as Pouncey. This is a good line with out Pouncey but it's a elite line with him. With him only Dallas's line can be considered just as good. We can get by without Pouncey by that doesn't mean we aren't significantly better with him.

Even though there are similarities to what transpired in 2013 with the loss of Pouncey, there are differences that make this year's team more equipped to deal with losing their All-Pro center.

Two years ago, the running game faltered after Pouncey's injury and was the second worst in the history of the organization and lowest (86.4 yards per game) in a 16-game schedule. The offense finished 20th in the league as the Steelers went 8-8 and missed the playoffs.

The Steelers also were without Le'Veon Bell and Heath Miller for the early part of the season.

“Two years ago when it happened, I was concerned,” Haley said. “The fact that we went through it with a lot of the same people means something. I think we came a long way as a group.”

The offensive line wasn't as established, either. Mike Adams started at left tackle before getting benched a quarter of the way through the season, and David DeCastro was coming off a knee injury that sidelined him most of his rookie year.

“The big thing now is that we have practice time, and that is something that we didn't have last time,” guard Ramon Foster said. “We aren't going to change up much at all. We just can't just bag a lot of stuff because Pouncey is down right now.”

Wallace is more of a brawler and finisher than a typical center.

“Everybody has their strengths and weakness, and I will go out there and do what I do best,” Wallace said.

Regarding Cody, yes he's been a more than decent backup, especially against the run but I'm a bit worried in passing situations, DeCastro has being helping him there with double teams (good call by the coaches) but he is nowhere close to Pouncey. As others said, the rest of the Line helps him stay afloat.

Kudos to Gilbert who has quietly being manhandling his counterparts, let's hope this trends continue.

Definitly this week will show a lot about who they really are.

I gotta lot of respect for Cody W. Dude has been through quite a bit ... just stumbled on this by accident:

Wallace was raised by his paternal grandparents, since both his parents died when he was young. When he was 8, his father, aged 43, died in prison—which he was in for charges that included theft—due to liver failure and a ruptured esophagus, both caused by alcoholism. His mother died of an unknown illness when he was 16, and was unable to take care of her two children many years before that. To feel his mother's presence, he wears her stud earrings. His older brother by two-and-a-half years has served four years in prison for drug charges.[25]

If I were to pick the most improved Steeler on offense, it might be Gilbert. Coach Mike Munchak has turned a player with focus issues, and molded him into a near pro bowl level talent!

Wallace gets a lot of help at Center... It helps that Decastro is athletic as he is, for that matter Foster is a converted Tackle and isnt quite as immobile as some guards either... Pounceys loss was always going to be mitigated, but lets not mistake that for it not being a drop off in quality of line play

I haven't seen a drop off. I believe our RB leads the AFC in rushing....I guess he could lead the LEAGUE in rushing. Pouncey is probably the biggest over paid player on the team. All things considered.

Some here think TIMMONS is the overpaid player. I agree POUNCY and his gangsta' have to much green.

Salute the nation

Cortez Allen comes to mind first unfortunately on overpaid

Thinking ahead, I'm not sure I'd give Pouncey another contract when this one expires.

If so, something based on playing time........................

You haven't seen a noticeable drop off because everyone else on the line are better players then they were two years ago when Pouncey was injured. They are covering whatever issues Wallace is having. He does however set the line and identify fronts and blitzes very well.

Two years ago they were just implementing the zone blocking scheme.. or toying with it. Havent heard anything on this subject in a long time.

They still run some of the zone blocking concepts. Just got a better OL Coach.

That's what a good coach does. Munchak was the best hire maybe ever for a position coach.
I have been wondering for a long time on how much this team has been slow or not developing talent.
Is it the drafting 100 pct or is it coaching & development?

This sums up my thoughts on the DB situation, maybe Munchak can coach up the DB's.

I've said this a number of times before. I don't think he is worth the money?

Points to Consider:
He's had the ankle which lost him for the AFC Championship game as a rookie, he's had the freak injury to his knee when Gilbert fell into him, he was lost for the season just a few plays into the 2013 campaign when, again a freak accident, DeCastro falls on him tearing up his MCL/ACL, and now a broken leg. This isn't to mention the number of times he's been out with stingers, dingers, ankles and the occasional illness. He has missed too many snaps, and hasn't been the impact center when he is in there that we are told he is.

He just signed a 5 year extension last year for 13mil. I believe Big Ben had a lot to say towards this happening due to Center/QB comfort and trust levels. However, it's my opinion that If he gets healthy before the season is over (expected to miss 10 games this year) we play him with the intent to trade him in the off season. Since his draft in 2010 the guy has missed, or will miss, 35 games in that time (to include this year. If he comes back by week 10 then it will be 29 games). It might be too soon to make a trade that financially benefits the Steelers, but he is an inconsistent and unreliable talent. Center in the Steel City is a position of durability, reliability, and an expected unique high level of play.

Probably an unpopular sentiment, but the guy just isn't the next Hartings, Dawson, and he will never be a Webster. We need to find his replacement, but I think Ben would protest any change before he retires.

When has Pouncey missed a game because of minor injury? Besides a Twitter rant or two I really don't understand the hate this guy gets..best center in league when healthy. His injuries have all been flukey. People who are paid to scout him and his peers consider him the best in the business.
