If anyone remembers at times the 1-5-5 set was good, kesiel would be at lolb and looked like it was designed to overload that side so he could come in the RT take him, he never would get by always hit a brick wall but it allowed Woodley and in the brief time we had Worlids to go vs a slower OL usually the RG who would slid so and with woodley wold just bullrush and sack the QB and Worlids had the speed to get around the edge causing the QB to step up and the pockt collapse. Since we have 2 very athlethic De who in college both dropped into coverage both tuitt and heyward I was thinking if they wont try a 4-2-5, a 2-3-6 where we would have eithier Edmunds or Burnett in the box coming up the a or B gap crossing with Vince. could be a 5 or 6 man blitz
What it could look like
DT Aluala/Frazier/Dan
DT Heyward
OLB Watt
MLB Williams blitz
OLB/DE standing up Tuitt to drop back initially read n react blitz or drop
Edge Dupree rush
Rover Edmunds/Burnett blitz
CB Burns
CB Haden
CB Hilton depending the set play FS or blitz and Burnett/ed play CF
S Burns

Why not have Hargrave in at DT over Aluala//Frazier/Dan ... He needs to improve against the run from last year, but his first step and quickness at his size would be a benefit.

can rotate both tyson is better vs the run.

WHERE exactly will the CBs line up????? How far off the line of scrimmage........Labeau notoriously had then 10-15yrds off.......... In today's league we would get eaten up again.

Yeah those 10 yard cushions just mean you die a slow death by papercut all the way to the endzone

Always hated those cushions, I would just calmly say allowed everytime "there we are playing 10 yds off the LOS, wonder if they'll throw a curl, or slant, or a drag, or probably a screen that'll go for 25.... but hey, at least we never give up a 60 yd deep pass"

Haden 3 yds off, Burns in press coverage.

Let the Dick defense die and rest in peace. Please!!!!!!

well whether butler has changed its been just slightly off Lebeau, the 1-5-5 and 3-3-5 were tossed away replaced with 2-4-5is 3-4-4 3-2-6, only thing is Lebeau used big cloggers to occupy blockers butler likes his dl as more penetrators but every 3-4 needs a a big NT, this every 3-4, hopefully frazier eithier lights a fire under big dan or unseats him.

The "Lebeau" defense played a ton of man defense this season, while we played more zone than anyone.
So we played zone when Lebeau was here and everyone says his defense is out dated, he needs to go.
He leaves and the team he goes to plays a ton of man and we still play more zone than anyone. Hmmmmm, again this defense is Tomlins, it wasn't Lebeaus anymore.
We played quite a bit of man with Lebeau and Cowher, he had a rookie McFadden man to man with Reggie Wayne late in that 05 playoff game

You can play zone without having your DBs 10 yds off the LOS, you can have Cover 2 with the DBs about 3-5 yds off, or in press, same goes for cover 3, 4 and so on, the point is not having them so far from the receiver at the snap giving up easy layup passes

agreed we had crappy corners before but now we have elite athletes that can play man to man, press or cover 2, would love a 4 man with just watt and Edmunds as the cover LB's or blitzers
burns can play press, zone, Haden better for man coverage, I would like to see both Allen and Sutton get more PT, I really hope Allen shows something

To be fair we have a huge question mark as to who will play FS.

Training camp will be fun to try to figure that out.

If you want to run Dick's 3-4, you need a really good run defending nose tackle.

And a few LBers. Inside and out. Also a couple of nice ends. Two safeties and corners would help also.

best/most innovative defense i remember seeing us run was in the playoffs where we had our safeties come close to the line. they were almost in man coverage, but had zone responsibility. the CBs were 10+ yards off the LOS, thus eliminating any deep passes to faster WRs.

safties were troy who also could play CB and Clark a good cover FS and suberb hitter

So basically it takes talent to run the Dick's defense and we had it. I wonder what exactly would be needed to run the 70's steel curtain defense? Umm. A handful of HOFers to start I would guess. Anybody else know?

Hampton and Mean Joe had skills than enabled other players to play better as a result of what their skill set offered.

I agree. Mean Joe also had a few other HOFers helping out also. My point was that those defenses might not ever be created again. If it was that easy everyone would have a great defense. It takes a bit of luck to get those special players to start to build around. And then have a scheme where multiple players can excell at. Seems like a bunch on here think it is easy just to find these players and start the templete over again. It obviously isn't.

The Lebeau 3-4 zone relied on big DLinemen shutting down the running lanes and edge rushers disrupting the backfield before the DBs had to engage, so they could be more of a zone safety net. The big difference today is that opposing offenses are opting to throw more on first down, thus making the nose tackle and pure edge rusher obsolete. Its now a hybrid nickel scheme that relies on the OLBs to drop into coverage more and the DL to be more aggressive in getting after the QB. Everyone is down on Hargrave because he's not 400lbs but the truth is he's got a motor and fits our new system well. He and Watt are the new prototypical pieces of our defense. Guys that can cover a lot of ground on every down.
