When there is a guy wide open without a DB on the screen (TE for SF), where is the coverage? I'm wondering if it's something coaching might be able to fix, or if guys are really getting outrun that badly.

Was there a pick or some type of shift that created this? I didn't see any of the game so all I can do is speculate.

I think a lot of times it is busted zone coverage. I think the DBs are still adjusting to cover 2 scheme. It will be fixed and they will get better as the season goes on, hopefully.

The problem is that even if they aren't wide open they are still beating the coverage. These guys just aren't good enough.

I'm more interested in the snap count for the secondary, going forward, when you consider we added in two new CBs in Cockrell and Boykin.
then we can see how that progresses, since neither were here for pre-season, which makes you have to consider yesterday as a huge learning curve. Smith, Boldin and Kaepernick aren't the greatest WR/QB combinations we'll face all year, but they're not the absolute worst either.

All good points, but did Boykin hold his own? Seemed to me he did OK, what did you guys see??

They played much more aggressively. When you play aggressive in a zone, sometimes you zero in on a guy and you lose the guy who is entering your zone. Or frequently a call is missed and a player thinks someone has deep coverage when their isn't. I thought they played reasonably well as a unit. I thought Mitchell and Gay were pretty good.

No one lined up on that side when the TE split out. It was a blown coverage.

I recorded the game and I'll have to go back to that play - but, IMO, there was some sort of Cover 2 coverage and IIRC the safety blitzed from that same side and it left a lot of field for Mitchell to cover. I could be wrong though...

Boykin swatted a pass away in the end zone.

I think the play being questioned is the pass to the wide open TE (Davis) down the sideline. We had Deebo lined up at LOLB on that play and he was likely supposed to pick him up initially. The Safety was then late coming over which made it worse. My guess is that IF we were in our normal alignment, this wouldn't have happened. Someone would have pointed it out. The 9ers were running a no huddle too which made it worse.

I think if Boykin and Cockrell get up to speed we will be somewhat better.
If only Rex Ryan was our head coach or defensive coordinator he would have figured something out. Oh wait....

That was the only play I saw him. After that play I started paying more Attention to who was on the field and didn't see him for the rest of the game. Wtf?
