I know a lot of you were expecting the high flying offense to click immediately, and destroy the lowly Browns. I know I was. But 2 things were certain. The Browns defense is much improved, and the Steelers offense needs to play a couple games together to get in sync.
The Killer B's were reduced to a single Bee. Brown was the man among boys today. 11 catches for 182 yards? Are you kidding me?? That's 71% of the passing yardage and 63% of the total offense. He got the contract and he came to play. You won the game ball by a large margin!
The defense is a squad to root for now, because they can win games for the Steelers now. 7 sacks, 57 yards rushing and 180 net yards passing! It is the first game with this defense, and they are already showing dominance on D.
The penalties were egregious for the Steelers, but it is September. I can live with mistakes in September, as long as we don't have games like this in November/December. They will improve on penalties each week until October. That is a trend for Tomlin's teams.
The Browns never had the ball with a chance to win the game. You may fret when they scored a TD and 2pt conversion to make the game close, but they never had the ball after that with a chance to take the lead. They kicked off from mid field, which is a tactical mistake. If you on-side from this spot, you are still defending the ball on the opponent's side of the field. It may have not have been recovered, but it was the only chance the Browns would have had to win the game.
The Steelers got the ball with 3:30 to go in the game, and could win the game on offense with a couple first downs. The run by Bell with over 2min to go was a thing of beauty. He could have bounced it outside for big yardage, but he could have been pushed out of bounds, stopping the clock before the 2 minute warning. Instead he turned upfield after the first down. The tackle happened in bounds and the clock ran to the 2 minute warning. Game over, kneel down. Might not have been a great game for Bell, but he made the right play at the end of the game to assure the win, and that's good enough for me!
A couple points from the game.
TJ Watt is fun to watch. He's in the plays getting pressure, stopping the run, defending passes and finished with 1 INT and 2 sacks. That is AFC defender of the week worthy numbers. Keep your eye out to see if he gets it.
Chickillo had 2 sacks as well. He's improving from year to year and gave a great effort today.
The rest of the sacks were rounded out by Triple H. Heyward, Hargrave, and newly acquired Haden all got sacks today as well!
Want to see the coolest part of the punt block? Watch Rosie Nix run into the endzone and turn around to start marking Browns players. He's the reason why the recovery was uncontested!
JuJu may not have had any catches in his NFL debut, but he did have a nice rundown and tackle on the interception. He's a baller. The plays will come.
Add your points as well. I'm happy to be a game up on the Pats!
