Tackle the catch, play scared on defense, zone defense, it's time to scrap anything left with Dicks fingerprints on it. The league has it figured out. Lebeau WAS a legend, much respect. But that doesn't mean we have to cling on to a dead scheme.

You have no idea WTF you are talking about. This is Tomlin's and Butler's scheme. They are playing Tomlin's Tampa 2 ZONE defense.

After watching the defense this season the entire defensive staff should have been let go. They should have let Butler leave when opportunities presented themselves.

Very little pressure on Mallet today. Personally I'm getting tired of the 3-4 and would love to go back to a 4-3 with some pass rushers

No pass rushers for the 3-4, none for the 4-3, what's the difference? Maybe the 4-3 would be a better fit to keep the linemen off their soft linebackers, though.

Yep Dick never played 15 yards off the receiver and used a scheme that counted on the defense to tackle the catch. Tomlin has spun a little Tampa 2 in no doubt, but this defense is no difference in scheme than it was 5 years ago. My point is it's time to be more aggressive and less passive.

This D needs a pass rusher SS and a CB no matter what scheme they come up with....

Look at the personnel. It's terrible.

Heyward - Borderline Pro Bowl player.
McLendon - Solid in the middle of the line, but not your prototypical 3-4 NT.
Tuitt - Improving player and already one of the better defenders.
Dupree/Moats - Rookie with little impact since early in season and he has passed Moats for playing time.
Timmons - Solid, but beginning to slow down.
Shazier - Soft against the run and can't cover. Still waiting for him to take over a game.
Jones/Harrison - Jones is a guy and Harrison is probably down to the last game of his career.
Blake - Seriously. He is our starting cornerback.
Gay - Decent, but would be better if the nickel back.
Cockrell/Boykin - Again, decent players in reserve roles.
Allen - Should be your No. 3 or 4 safety but is starting.
Mitchell - Physical player who makes a lot of boneheaded plays. In Ryan Clark mold of getting hurt after every big hit.

You can only mask that lack of talent so much.

You are clueless. They've been taking chances all year. Which is why they have so many picks. They wanted the guys looking into the backfield and getting better jumps on the ball. The problem is that the Tampa 2 has been figured out years ago. But Tomlin loves it. They blitzed several times today but it was picked up. Even if they went to a 4-3 they'd play a Tampa 2 ZONE defense with CBs playing off. So again you have no idea WTF you are talking about.

There are blitzes and there are blitzes. You stand up 7 guys around the line of scrimmage and you can confuse and rattle a kid like that. Blitzes don't mean anything if they are easily identified.

Exactly. Scheme is pretty irrelevant without talent.

The OLBs are just not making any plays.

Vader I love that you are the Buddha of all football. But I can't help but notice you say we are playing Tomlins Tampa 2 defense, yet you fail to mention that was a 4-3 scheme. I do believe this scheme in Pittsburgh is still a 3-4 scheme correct? And I don't know wtf I'm talking about. And before you reply that you can play a Tampa 2 out of a 3-4, that is a fact. But if you think this base defense isn't a 3-4
Lebeau type scheme then it is you that's clueless.

Either way, this board is meant for discussion. it's unfortunate that we can't have disagreements on here without resorting to a level of low class. Go Steelers.

I just would like to see better tackling, make them earn the yards. Our coverage because no rush is out of sink, players looking around and no clue what their reasonability is. look at the 2 and 3rd down plays with more than 15 to go and it is given up like a third and one.

I couldn't agree with you more brother

I don't know if I'd call their base defense a 3-4 given how much they work out of the nickel.

They've talked all year about morphing the Tampa 2 coverage with the 3-4 base. I can't help it if you didn't know that or are that out of touch. Maybe you should actually listen to the coaches during the off season or at least read something. Saying that DL's stink needs to be removed is the epitome of class these days I guess. Talk about clueless.

yeah DL's D wasn't even this bad...

Yep they use Nickel way more that's for sure. But the base is a 3-4 attack. That's why Vince Williams hardly ever plays cuz he is much better at run stopping out of the base defense. But I agree with you, due to the changes in the league, the Nickel should be our base as much as we are in it. Lol

I agree. Back in the day when we began 3- 4 we had the advantage of having free reign of drafting a top notch NT because few teams were playing it. Now with everyone playing it, that's a lot tougher to do. This draft will be 15 years since our last one.

Heres what blows me away. Last week we switched the defense up in the second half to a more in your face pressure defense and pitched a shut out. This week we start with the same D we were getting torched with last week, and we stuck with it the whole game. Why not try what was working last week especially against a new QB??

stinks of a head coach decision

What I can't stand is the 2nd and 9's that turn into 3rd and 4 that turn into a first down. Every. Single. Time. This team cannot get off the field on third down and perhaps it has to do with the fact that they give up the middle of the field or are always seemingly afraid of the ******* deep ball and playing 7-8 yards off the LOS even in short yardage situations. Also infuriating, if it worked for them once before, they abandon it in the next game: playing tight coverage against the donkeys in the second half last week then coming out today apparently deathly afraid of Ryan mallet beating them over the top. What's really sad is that it's the same rhetoric every week.

My point exactly. Tackle the catch, which has corners playing off, and Playing scared, which you referred to as afraid of Mallet beating you deep. Steelers been doing that for years. It's that scheme to which I refer to as the stink. Not the man. It's just time for a change.
