AFC North rookie spotlight
BEREA, Ohio – They came off the edges in violent waves, collapsing pockets and creating havoc like forces of nature dressed in black.
The Steelers pass' rush was an intimidating constant for two decades. The only thing that seemed to change was the name of the outside linebackers who battered quarterbacks with regularity. Kevin Greene. Greg Lloyd, Chad Brown, Joey Porter, Jason Gildon, LaMarr Woodley, James Harrison. A roll call of menace.
Then, almost without warning, the defensive deluge subsided. The Steelers grew old and the replacements less capable. Sacks totals have been in decline since 2011, and last season they reached a 26-year low with just 33.
Enter Alvin "Bud" Dupree. The Steelers' first-round draft pick from Kentucky is aware of the franchise's rich history of terrorizing quarterbacks and hopes to be part of its revival.
"I want to be in that group that brings it back," the No. 22 overall pick said last week at the NFL Rookie Symposium in Berea. "We want to bring back that hunger, that eagerness to go after the quarterback."
