The Pittsburgh Steelers defense has looked great the last few years and it’s looking like a majority of the unit will be returning in 2021. Big names like JuJu Smith-Schuster and Bud Dupree are the most talked about and while they should be seen as top priorities this offseason, there’s another player hitting free agency with a lot of value as well.

Although the 2020 season just concluded, free agency is approaching sooner than later and the Steelers owe it to themselves to re-sign cornerback Cameron Sutton as he showed impressive flashes at times this season. According to PFF, Sutton is the one player the Steelers “can’t afford to lose.” The 25-year old defensive back made six starts this past season and his performance throughout this campaign flew under the radar despite career bests in tackles (30), forced fumbles (3) and passes defended (8).

If Pittsburgh can sign Sutton to a seemingly team-friendly deal, it could be a tremendous move for them as he continues to grow and improve as a player. Since we don’t have a lot to breakdown with playing time/opportunities being an issue for Sutton, going based on recency bias is the likely solution in a situation of this circumstance. That being the case, the Steelers should absolutely buy-in based on what they saw from Sutton after getting time with the starting unit.

Sutton’s ceiling appears to be on the rise and the value of a strong cornerback in the league today with so many fantastic pass catchers is as high as ever. It’s not rare for teams to have anywhere between two to four dangerous receivers and it’s significantly important to have defensive players to match that talent. Sutton has age on his side as well as a great group of mentors around him in Joe Haden and Steven Nelson. With the direction he’s headed, the decision to retain the rising star appears increasingly easier the closer free agency approaches.

Agreed....and I would add Mike Hilton would be another "can't afford to lose" player.

I’d be curious if Ben’s reworked contract, and the cap floor moving to $185 would give Colbert a chance to take a run a Bud in addition to Sutton or Hilton. Reducing Ben’s cap hit by $20 mil would definitely give PIT some latitude to do so. Keep the defense together for beyond Ben should be the plan.

or making a run at William Jackson III.......

Hilton has a certain skill - blitzing from the slot corner position. Sutton has a better skill - covering receivers well. If forced to make a choice, go with Sutton since his skill set is based on what his position should do well.

In order of UFA guys we need to sign
1 Alualu... the dude had top 3 DL grades until he was injured...
2 Hilton... the guy brings a dynamic to the D that isn’t easily replaced...
3 Sutton.... you must have 3 capable CBs and he is more than just capable... he is a low grade starter

then you can look at juju or dupree if they somehow get cheaper... or Connor...

NOT Conner due to the fact of drafting a starting RB within the first 3

Gotta love the "team friendly deal" term. League minimum would be great.

Brown shafted us because of someone (Rappaport through an agent who also repped a Steelers player at the time) started banging away WJ3 was our top rated corner on the board. Even though they wanted a DT. CIN brain trust figured since the two top DL went earlier and none were selected to their pick, they could grab the player PIT wanted and still get one of the 3 DT they targeted. Unfortunately, 3 of the 6 DL were selected 5 picks after them. Plus the remaining coveted DL were picked before their 2nd rounder. Karma does indeed exist. One talking head (Collingsworth? Maybe Chris Simms) opined CIN coaches wanted Fuller or Treadwell to get more weapons on offense, but since they went right before their pick, they gambled their backup plan with the DT. Now, although doubtful (sorry Coolie), WJ3 could be signed as a FA to the team that wanted him all along.

I know it is extremely doubtful, but he has played very well in cincy....other than his non tackle on a Bell TD when they played the Steelers

the only way to get WJ3 is cutting Haden and working a long term deal with guaranteed money spread out. He shouldn't be sooo expensive as he is already 28 but he will look to cash in as this probably is his only chance at a multi year deal. Maybe a 4Y/30M contract would be enough to get him?

Would you consider signing him for that amount? do you think he has a bigger market value? How much would Sutton cost in comparison? Discuss...

Free agency is going to be a kick in the rear. Just watch. I would like to retain Big AL, and shift him to RT if Possible.

Ju-Ju, and Bud please fetch us a 3rd round comp pick in 2022.

Retain an aging LT which will cost more than anyone currently on the line, and then move him to RT? Why would Al resign at RT, a position he’s never played before at PIT, when someone will offer him LT money? PIT can sign Banner and draft two OT for what it would cost to retain Al at either position. For credibility’s sake, you should probably keep your prognostications to the person you are looking at in the mirror.

oh, and for your wish list in comp picks, the formula may change if the 2021 cap doesn’t exceed 2020. JuJu probably won’t get the biggest WR FA contract. Even if he doesn’t stay in PIT.
