Pitt - Jax game thread

First of all, I'm not a big fan of Roethlisberger getting as much time off this summer as he has reportedly been getting. Guys like Peyton, Brady***', Brees and Rodgers basically have to be dragged away from practice reps, while Ben seems to embrace the vacation time.

You think the young receivers are at a disadvantage practicing at an inflated rate with Jones, imagine the regular season preparation of the defense. They must feel like the 1985 Bears practicing against that bum,

Yep, they never have to worry about any throws down the field because Jones just takes the underneath routes. Pressure, no pressure, it's all the same.

I haven't heard anything like this. Has someone reported that Ben has not wanted to practice? Quote? Fact of the matter is that the Steelers have 5 preseason games this year instead of 4. Ben played as much in this game as a starter usually would play in the first preseason game of the season. And he looked especially sharp. No smoke and no fire from where I'm standing.

Pretty much every third string qb in the league sucks ***. The question is, can you go with only 2 qbs with Grad banged up?

The Steelers have been horrible since the 70s on drafting and developing drafted back up QBs, their most successful one was Mike Kruczek who never threw an NFL TD but did win 6 straight games as he starting QB in 1976.

Their best backup qbs have been Bubby, Batch, Tomczak, Maddox, and Kordell when he backed up Maddox. Not saying much, but let's be honest, there are maybe 10 good qbs in the league, and then 10 more who are decent. Add a couple of young guys who are green, and you end up with about 10 guys starting who are well below the line. Doesn't leave much room for good backups. If a backup proves to be really good, he'll soon be a starter somewhere. These are second stringers we're talking about. When you get to third string, ugh. Any team who is forced to use a third stringer for more than a game or two might as well start looking to next year.

The look on both tomlin and ben's face, that was Landry Jone's last chance. Two short fields, and he was unable to do anything with it. They are both done with him.

Sounds like a complete waste of a draft pick and a roster spot when we could have taken another player that was a project at a position that might help the team.

Never got to watch the game, what were the starters on defense like. I looked at the play by play it looked like they held them on a short first drive, gave up a long field goal drive and then a lot exited and the seconds and thirds came in and gave up TDs. Is that how it was?

I wont know myself until i get home & watch the dvr, listened to it on the radio but sounded like the defense wasnt getting off the field too often.

They were soft up the middle, couldn't stop the draw play up the gut. Couldn't get any pressure at all on Bortles. luckily. he throws like Landry.

I'm afraid Bud looks like another Jarvis clone, always getting slapped out of the way or thrown to the dirt,

Harrison and Shazier were the only ones playing,

Other than Gay, the secondary was invisible. Did that Shamarko guy even play? You couldn't tell.

Watched the entire game. First, it's only the Steelers 2nd preseason game, they have 5, so it's hard to determine much since a lot of regulars didn't play a lot.

As to the new kicker, he doesn't have a booming leg BUT he made both field goals and that's what's important. Perhaps he will get a little better on kick offs but we are going to need to be sharp on special teams,

As to Landry Jones, where do I start, Simply put, he didn't get it done. Too many times he threw high (usually interceptions). I watched the play clock and he still doesn't get the O line set early enough to be able to read the D. I agree with the poster who mentioned he might not have enough arm strength. All in all, we are wasting a valuable space keeping this guy. It's time to move on.

The D does not look intimidating at all. Vanilla Manilla light. Not sure this has anything to do with former Coach LeBeau vs present Coach Butler as it does with the lack of impact players. Pretty sad when the heart and soul of the defensive performance is a bull rush by 37 yr old James Harrison to strip a ball. If our Offense is struggling during the season we are in real trouble.

One can dispute the significance, but the quality of preseason play has no doubt slipped from Cowher to Tomlin.

It's almost like Tomlin takes the "games don't matter" perspective too literally,

Geez Louise.. Smdh. Sad part serious as hell

The overall talent obviously isn't there, but I just do not see the kind of effort in the exhibition games that I saw under Cowher.

Even those "fighting for jobs" seem to be merely going through the motions,

Just stop. I can't even remember preseason games from last week and you remember effort from Cower's tenure??

Without Ben Rothlisberger, this is a 4-12 team.

11-5 ? 12-4 ? HERE we come,

Salute the nation

but yet still played him to the bitter end

not sure what its going to take to play him less

I wouldn't be shocked if we seen an available vet QB come into camp this week. As a matter of fact, I'm praying for it.

They don't have another backup QB.
They could either play Tyler Murphy who has split time at WR.
Or just suck it up and play Jones, then you at least give the young WR's a decent chance to show case themselves and make plays.
Sometimes it's about the other ten guys on the field.

and that is all well and dandylion

**** flower some passes to the newbees to see if one sticks on the roster or a few stick on the PS

but if yinz going to keep three QBs again

let's bring in a better alternative

But does Jones really give the young WRs a DECENT CHANCE to showcase themselves and make plays? I don't see it when a good portion of his throws are dump offs to the RB and those that aren't provide a guessing game as to whether they will be at the WR's feet, over his head, wide left/right or even in the same zip code. On a lot of Jones' completions last night I saw WRs that had to leave their feet in order to make routine catches because the ball was high or wide.

Plus, we don't know what Murphy brings to the table as a QB since we haven't actually seen him play QB in a the preseason games. He must be pretty terrible at it if he can't take ANY snaps from Landry.

In some distant insurance office, Tommy Maddox 's phone is ringing.

Yep. He is better than Landry will ever be, and it's not close.

I don't like Jones at all.

But my point is that there probably will be better options later in the preseason.

And if Gradkowski recovers, who's No. 3 isn't important.
