James Franklin put on his cool shades then signed the best player in PA, one of the top OL in the country to add to Penn State's top 10 recruiting class.

Actually nothing. It goes back to the times that cool shades was being tossed out as a nickname for MT and he then mentioned having what he was wearing being mentioned regarding his coaching. With that having been said it can now go from something he was being roasted for to trend setting thus the followers of his stylin shades.

Which is also why the tread was called ota fun, finding things to toss out just for the fun of it.

How has Franklin been compared to O'Brien? Not trying to trash talk or anything, but O'Brien seemed like a football coach while Franklin comes off as a used car salesman. Thoughts from the PSU fanbase?

The fanbase really loves Franklin but isn't sure he's a good coach yet. He is proven to be a great recruiter and let's face it, that is most of what wins in college. Les Miles is a moron but he can recruit, so he wins.

The quick answer is most fans view O'Brien as the better X and Os guy but Franklin as the far better recruiter. They are hoping Franklin proves he can actually coach as well.

The big difference is Franklin loves being a college coach, the recruiting, the pep rallies, coaching caravans to meet fans. etc. O'brien hated all of that and that's why he left the first chance he got. I don't know a single PSU fan that though O'Brien would be at PSU longer than 5 years or so. I thought he'd stay until Belicheck retires from the Pats. He's 63, so he may hang it up in a few years.


Franklin has put together a staff of energetic and outgoing coaches. Their OL coached appeared on the cooking show Chopped. Their DC had head coaching offers and decided to stay.

Franklin and O'Brien actually coached together at Maryland under Ralph Friedgen and they both consider him their mentor. Franklin coached with the Packers for a bit too, so he does have some NFL experience.

Franklin is more of a do whatever it takes to win guy than O'Brien who is a scheme guy. The scheme guys always get more credit. Franklin won at Vanderbilt and his teams weren't exactly loaded with talent so he must have some coaching chops.

Thanks for the history lesson and the education of cool shades. THUS the tossing out of my statement, just for fun...... Obviously, there is no logic, so hence...... "What does LOGIC have to do with this? "

Kind of like "OMAR" or "uncle jarvis" . UNCLE JARVIS has to be the craziest nickname given to a player of late. Totally get it, but funny as hell as to the reference meant by it.

I was sure you got it but not so sure about some others who get riled up about anything other than praise and knob slobbering for coach mt
