Round 1-
A. Rashaan Evans
B. Derrius Guice
C. Eric Reid
A) I think the Steelers have definitely targeted ILB as their top need. Looking back over some drafts as of late the Steelers FO have overlooked some questionable athleticism and or draft value to fill a need. Jarvis Jones and Artie Burns come to mind. I honestly think LVE is the guy if he is there but I don’t see him falling to #28. I do however see Evans falling to #28 and a lot further if the Steelers don’t draft him. The Steelers have definitely shown interest and I have come to learn the Steelers don’t play games. If they are interested they show it. I believe if Evans is there the Steelers once again sprint to the podium.
B) I also think the interest in Guice is very real. I feel the FO is about done with LB and his BS. They have made their best offer and if they go RB in the first round Bell is all but gone. I personally don’t want Guice or a round 1 RB. I would rather go RB round 3 or later but I also don’t have to deal with Bell and his agent.
C) Reid is a guy who tests well, is smart, is position flexible, and fits a need. I think Reid and Davis could both play FS/SS and even cover the slot if need be. That I feel makes him a fit for Butlers defense because he wants position flexibility.
Round 2-
A. Jessie Bates
B. Malik Jefferson
C. Kerryon Johnson
A. If the Steelers go ILB first round and Bates is around in the second they could potentially fill their two biggest needs in the first two rounds. Bates is someone again the Steelers have shown a lot of interest in. I think Bates is more of a FS which would leave Davis at SS.
B. If the Steelers go RB in the first round they will definitely look to fill their biggest need in round two. Jefferson is a 5 star recruit whom could have used another year to develop but came out early. He has elite speed and is quick twitched but is a little on the short side and has shorter arms. In college he was more of a run stopper and didn’t have to flip his hips and run with TE’s much. That said he has the speed so we’d have to see if we could coach him up. Bostic would definitely start all of 2018 with Jefferson having to earn a hat on special teams.
C. If the Steelers went Reid and Jefferson is off the board and they decided to go offense I think Johnson has to be on their radar in the second. Johnson checks a lot of the boxes minus the bench press and he and Bell have pretty similar playing styles and college stats.
Round 3-
A. Kalen Ballage
B. Terrell Edmunds
C. Darius Leonard
A. If the Steelers got their two biggest perceived needs in ILB and S I think the Steelers would take a guy with high upside and low tread on the tires. Again Ballage checks the boxes minus bench press but with his crazy long arms for a RB at 32 ¾ his 15 reps are a bit more understandable. Harder for long armed guys to put up the bar than short arm guys.
B. Personally I would take Edmunds in the 1st round. But I what I keep reading is he’s a 3rd or 4th round pick. This would again give the Steelers their top three perceived needs and make it a successful draft by needs standpoint.
C. Again the Steelers get a perceived top 3 need with Leonard. Leonard is a definite Mack type backer whom flows throw traffic and can flip and run in coverage if needed. I don’t think he makes it to the 5th round so if the Steelers want him they’d have to get him here.
Round 5a- Richie James WR MTSU
James is electric with the ball in his hand. He has return potential and I think he has a decent shot making the 53 man and I feel a very good shot at being the slot next season.
Round 5b- Avonte Maddox CB Pitt
Maddox will not blow anyone away with his size but he will with his effort and quickness. He’s a team leader, good character, and hard worker. Reminds me a lot of Hilton with better speed.
Round 7a- Jordan Mailata Athlete Sydney Australia
Another piece of clay for Munch to mold into a football player. He has the size 6-8 345lbs with 10 ½” hands and long 35 ½” arms. Freakish quick for his size 5.12 40 (would have been 8th at combine) 4.67 short shuttle (would have been 9th at combine).
Round 7b- Will Dissly TE Washington
Dissly isn’t the biggest, fastest, or nimblest player out there but he is well rounded athletically and is a hardnosed give 100% every snap type player
