Pretty shocking to come out of the blue like this. He is retiring immediately and the OC, Lincoln Riley, will take over as HC.

For a coach to retire at this time of year it makes me think of 3 possible reasons.

1. Health Related. Maybe he or a family member has a health issue
2. He was planning to retire at the end of the year but did so now because he wants Lincoln Riley to get a shot at the job.
3. Oklahoma has been slipping and boosters may have been turning up the heat, so Stoops told them to eat **** and walked away before all the backstabbing began.

I hope it's not #1. But #3 seems most likely

You mean he pretended he was sick so he could quit and avoid the coming bad seasons brought on by recruiting violations and a no discipline, then he will miraculously be well again as soon as a loaded contender with deep pockets comes calling?

I fully expected to open this thread and see where he died

I'm pretty sure he has heart trouble.

SANCTION'S INCOMING!!!!!!!

Oh wait, the Sooners are in the Big 12 not the SEC.

Never mind.

Well good for him and I hope the fishing is good.
I think #3 and #1 also

Salute the nation

To retire like this, probably health related or something personal in his life going on that required his attention. He had a good run for them. They really **** the bed in the big bowl games in the latter portion of his tenure though.

I was shocked when I heard this yesterday and figured it was either health or scandal. You just don't see all-time coaches retire randomly in the offseason. I hope the best for Stoops.

guess he knew he was due for another bowl game asswhoopin' and didn't feel like going through with it again?

I think option #4. Stoops provable told them he was retiring for all of the above reasons, and Riley knew he was next in line.

Number 2. We saw Dean Smith, John Thompson, and Jim Calhoun pull this. Decide to retire, but wait until it's too late to find a good coach, ensuring that your top aide gets the job.

Didn't his father die of a heart attack at his age? That tends to put things in perspective. Considering he was a coach too.

Don't know about Thompson or Calhoun, but Coach Smith didn't pull anything. Guthridge was the defacto coach next in line for years before Coach Smith retired. One of the reasons Matt Doherty took his own route. When Coach Guthridge knew his health was going to be an issue, Coach Williams was quietly approached.
