The Steeler tied for most sacks in the league. Great, huh?

But if sacks are an indicator of the quality of a D, why were they only 27th in overall D? Is that good?

What? You say points given up is more indicative of a D than yards? OK, they were 16th there. Better, but that puts them as average.

So, where's the problem? Players? Definitely to some degree. We had an ILB slower than my mom. no NFL-caliber CB after Haden on the roster.

And at S? Davis is below average.

But still, while we need upgrades on players, it's more than just that.

It appears the staff "sold out" on making sacks at the expense of a tight, solid D. Whoopee we had sacks, and we also didn't even make the playoffs.

So what did the team do to address this? Fire the LB coach. That should solve everything.

In Butler, we have a DC who didn't even realize the UPCOMING opponent had been without their best TE for weeks, and was gone for the SEASON, but out DC -
you know, the guy responsible for getting the D ready for opponents - was unaware he was out. How can you possibly explain this as acceptable? And yet, he
remains our DC.

You kind of went with sacks to off on a defensive tangent.

A great D is solid when it counts the most. In the 4th quarter with the game on the line. That is when it matters.

Steelers problem is a combination of below the line players on D mixed with ****** coaching.

They brought in two try hard players on defense a good start, now we will see if the coaching adjustments make a difference.

As far as sacks they are important, but so is constant pressure. Or again pressure when it matters, in the 4th quarter.

Enough picks in this draft to come away with an attractive LB and secondary player. As well as an attractive offensive skilled player.

Team has a lot of things to be motivated for and usually play the underdog role well.

The distractions are gone, and now they can focus on being a team.

For that is what wins championships.

Sacks are nice but their PPG allowed was mid-pack. Ben led the league in passing too but I didn't see them in any playoff games this season.

I missed that too, seeing them in a play off game, that is.................... Sacks don't mean squat UNLESS there is a "W" to go with them.

Salute the nation

Where the entire team was lacking and tells the story, is in give away/take away. We were 28th in the league at minus 11! We need to protect the ball better on offense and take it away more on defense and this will make a drastic change in our team. But this is easier said then done. We need playmakers on defense like Troy who always seemed to get the big interception in the 4th.

I didn’t get the memo did pops change his name?

Whoever it is, they make a hell of a good point IMO. The turnover margin was pretty bad, and they still went 9-6-1. Not saying I'm satisfied with that, but change that turnover margin and things are looking up for this team.

We need to score more points than the other team.

It's promising to know we can pressure an opposing QB

Yeah, the one thing they were good at and peoples want to nitpick. What would our ppg be without all those sacks?

The sacks are good, but as others said rog and inability to finish. I would add a lack of turnovers. Virtually no interceptions. Watt seemed to be the only guy tackling the ball and when it was out they missed a hell of a lot of opportunities.

I mentioned in another thread a while back that I would expect there to be some correlation from the large # of sacks to lead to errors by the other team via fumbles or QB thrown ints. Didn't work out for us. Maybe, there is no basis for expecting the correlation. Maybe, Watt is getting to the QB before he makes that bad pass. Could be a ton of things. The main things seem to be 1) our DB's aren't where they should be, 2) can't catch 3) both.

Pressure on the QB also results in I’ll advised throws which combined with ball hawks we will be picking up here WILL result in picks

The fact the Steelers can get to the QB as much as they do and still struggle preventing points and forcing turnovers reflects the ineptness of the secondary play, which Tomlin has been trying to fix for like six years now.

I'm convinced it's going to take a Mike Munchak-caliber secondary coach to turn that **** around.

Sacks are important. Here’s how I see it in order of importance.

Qb hurries that lead to throw away passes
Qb hits that lead to throw away passes
Tipped passes that are incompletions.
Sacks
Forced fumbles from Qb hits
Interceptions from a rushed or hit Qb.

And yes Davis sucks

I agree. The talent isn't great, but it isn't as bad as they're showing either. They have respectable players at safety and cornerbacks, they can't put it together. Burns was a questionable pick, but his play fell off a cliff. Legitimately got worse each year and was downright awful last year.
