Because Madden was a bit overweight.
A slender Cage wouldn’t have cut it.

Having added a few pounds he does resemble Madden in a way.
I wonder if he had a Hollywood trainer help him with that. lol

Tom Cruise has played the same character 20 times. Russell Crowe - compare Gladiator and Master & Commander to A Beautiful Mind. LA Confidential is another incredible movie/performance by him.
