"NFL engineers and sports equipment company Oakley are testing prototypes of modified facemasks that may contain surgical or N95 material, the NFLPA's medical director said Monday.

Speaking on Monday's The Adam Schefter Podcast, Thom Mayer said "there will probably be a recommendation" that the NFL will use such masks to protect players from the coronavirus when the league returns to play.

"Back in early March, I had suggested that we should consider novel and emerging ways to handle the helmets and the facemasks and the spread of the virus," Mayer said. "And these guys, the bioengineers that we use and that the league uses -- Oakley, as you may or may not know, does all the face visors for the league under contract -- these guys got the bit between their teeth."

I can see this going over well....Not to mention totally not practical.

Other than neighborhood pickup games and a couple years in high school, I never played a lot of organized football. Even so, I can't see how this would be practical for breathing, and what do you do with the mouth piece?

Talk about touching your face, the opponents would be pulling it over your eyes!

Personally, I don't do any changes to the helmets. Your job is to make this as safe as possible for the athletes, who are already have the lowest chance of dying from this. Just test them on Saturday before games. You're clean? You can play!

I know sometimes at work if I'm busy i have trouble breathing with the mask. N95s are even more restrictive. Can't imagine playing football in one. Besides that if it just goes over the face mask, the whole space above age below will be open. I would have to see a pic, but certainly doesn't seem like it would work well

N95 masks are really restrictive because of the filter. And these guys are huffing and puffing and spitting on one another? Just stupid.

Some players play with face shields already. That should do the trick for anybody wanting one it should be somewhat effective. Either than that delay or cancel the season. None of us want that. So hopefully they can solve this problem by the beginning of the season. You can't restrict their breathing as that could possibly be life altering for some.

I can see the faceshield but regular masks and especially N95 masks will be an absolute no go with the players. There is no way they can do it. Some of the players train with a mask on but that is for limited periods. There is no way they would wear it for an entire game, especially the big uglies. They'll have to strap an oxygen tank to their backs to make this happen.

Put on a mask. Play ball!

Stupid. If spread will happen it will be by cross contamination. These guys spit, lick their gloves and hands for grip all the time. Then other dude catching the ball, ref grabs the ball, center and now back to the QB or handed off to the RB. How many people now have the virus in their hands. Repeat for 60min. Lol masks.

Corona virus is .0125 microns , n95 mask filters as little as .0250 microns see a problem here?

You have to be careful when talking about absolutes with these masks. From a published paper from multiple Medical Professionals studying the efficacy of respirator & surgical masks:

Abstract

Background: Respiratory protection devices are used to protect the wearers from inhaling particles suspended in the air. Filtering face piece respirators are usually tested utilizing nonbiologic particles, whereas their use often aims at reducing exposure to biologic aerosols, including infectious agents such as viruses and bacteria.

Methods: The performance of 2 types of N95 half-mask, filtering face piece respirators and 2 types of surgical masks were determined. The collection efficiency of these respiratory protection devices was investigated using MS2 virus (a nonharmful simulant of several pathogens). The virions were detected in the particle size range of 10 to 80 nm.

Results: The results indicate that the penetration of virions through the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)-certified N95 respirators can exceed an expected level of 5%. As anticipated, the tested surgical masks showed a much higher particle penetration because they are known to be less efficient than the N95 respirators. The 2 surgical masks, which originated from the same manufacturer, showed tremendously different penetration levels of the MS2 virions: 20.5% and 84.5%, respectively, at an inhalation flow rate of 85 L/min.

It should be noted that the surgical masks are primarily designed to protect the environment from the wearer, whereas the respirators are supposed to protect the wearer from the environment.

but think of the fashion and marketing possibilities for the NFL:

I can't believe the callous nature of you so-called "fans".

There is a .000287 chance that one of those guys could DIE!

It's like you're pulling the trigger YOURSELVES!

If the NFL is really serious, they test the players , coaches, trainers, and anyone else on a sideline or booth one a week for covid-19. A positive test = that person can't play until cleared. They could also say if your body is above 100 degrees, you're out for the game. This is the way to prevent it.

The NFL seems to be more interested in optics and talk about awarding teams to hire minority coaching.
