"For the past couple months, it was clear the NFL was going to change the catch rule. The changes sound a lot like a more common sense approach.

NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent talked to Mark Maske of the Washington Post, and set forth the expected parameters of the fixed catch rule. Fans who are frustrated by what’s a catch and terms like “surviving the ground” will appreciate that it seems to be a simplified approach.

“Slight movement of the ball, it looks like we’ll reverse that,” Vincent told Maske. “Going to the ground, it looks like that’s going to be eliminated. And we’ll go back to the old replay standard of reverse the call on the field only when it’s indisputable.”

It sounds like plays that look like a catch will be ruled a catch. Infamous reversals like Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant’s non-catch at Lambeau Field in the playoffs three years ago or Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Jesse James’ score being overturned against the New England Patriots last year shouldn’t happen anymore.

“The Dez Bryant play, that’d be a catch” Vincent told the Washington Post. “The Jesse James play, that’d be a catch.”

Maske wrote the modified rule could be finalized Tuesday and presented to the owners next week at the league’s annual meeting.

There will still be issues, because it will always be hard to determine what’s a catch and what’s not. It’s a hard thing to officiate. There will still be moments when fans complain about a catch or non-catch call. By making the catch rule less detailed we’ll see more interpretation by officials, and that can lead to controversy, too. But what the NFL is trying to do is eliminate catches being reversed because the ball shifts slightly when it touches the ground or when it comes out when a receiver hits the ground, even if he clearly had control of the catch before going to the ground. Those are good things.

It will still be challenging to get every call right, because officiating an NFL game is a difficult job in general. But if the NFL can cut down significantly on its fans spending Sunday complaining about the catch rule, it will be a welcomed change."

---I'd like to know when and why they ever got away from only reversing a call when it was indisputable?? I thought that was SUPPOSED to be the case this whole time.

RIGHT! That part jumped out at me, and not just because you bolded it, lol

I'm glad they're trying to get it right. But I will never get over the Jesse James play costing us a critical W, critical #1 seed, and possible ring #7

How many times have the cheatriots benefited from these type of interpretations that other teams never seem to get......???? I'm in the boat as to why did they stray away from the reversing the indisputable call???
I wonder if the ratings are having a bigger impact than they want to let on.........and am curious as to how the game will be controlled because that will always be a part of the game, BIG MONEY will see to that.

Was it a catch? Depends, did Tom Brady throw it

we will call this new rule..

the we aren't going to hand the patriots 4 games during the season rule

oh wait they will still lop side the penalties in their favor

neverminddddddddddddddd

So the new catch rule is just going bake to the old rule before they changed it.

1. Control
2. 2 feet down or a body part

3. A football move such as
...1. A 3rd step
...2. Reaching or extending for line to gain
...3. Or the ability to perform such an act

The only gray area now is step 3.3. The only point of that is to make sure that there has to be at least some measure of time after control before it is officially a catch.

You don't want a guy standing there and he catches the ball with both feet down and a split second after that, the DB rakes the ball out. Without 3.3, that would have to be ruled a fumble.

Or if that same scenario happened in the endzone, then it would have to be ruled a TD because play would be over the instant he had control and 2 feet.

When you think about it, that should be ruled incomplete and 3.3 allows for that gray area to determine if the guy had the chance to really have control and it be a ctach

The other thing they said is that replay will go back to only overturning the call if it is obviously wrong. I don't know when that did change but it sure did as the replay booth started making their own calls without taking into account the call on the field.

There will always be a few controversial plays but this should cut down on a lot of them. No more watching a guy take 5 steps then roll out of bounds and you have to watch the replay to see if the ball moved a tiny bit on the second out of bounds roll.

Does it gives the Steelers the win vs the pats***** And homefield advantage? I didn't think so.

I'm all for the rule getting rid of "going to the ground", "ball moving" and "lunging to gain yardage/first down/TD". Fixing those 3 goes a long way to fixing what it means to catch a football.

Problem 1 with this revision....what defines “control”? Seems another gray area to be scrutinized....

Problem 2. 3.3 - “the ABILITY to perform”.....how is that to be interpreted? Does this mean impeded as well as non-impeded?

Leave it to the NFL to revert back to "old" rules that were never publicly changed in the first place. The "new" rules are what most of us thought were supposed to be in place already!

Exactly this is what I always thought a catch was until that Calvin Johnson play

So we should give the Steelers the W over New England and re-do the playoffs with Steelers as #1 seed right?! Yeah!! Who's with me!!!!

ONLY until the game is in hand,...........then they will use meaningless penalties to "even" it up.

read in the depot that another new rule is coming regarding the use of the helmet in any way, you can't spearhead, lower your helmet to make cotnact, etc. It affects also those RBs that lower and go forward to get some extra yards,

This might change how the whole game is played, I mean those RBs were taught since they were kids to play a certain way that now can cause them to even be ejected of a game.

I say it again, get rid of the helmets and let's see who is crazy enough to lead with his own head

Potentially taking the RB right out of the game. I bet there is a 3yard line of scrimmage cushion then "heads up" applys. ANOTHER good reason to NOT over pay at that position. Soon the game will be dead and many fans will ONLY watch as convenient entertainment.

So what will be interesting is how do they call a QB sneak not a penalty and eject the QB. Because the whole point of a QB sneak is to lower you head and drive forward. Anyone care to the Over/under on QBs being tossed with this new rule?

Even more interesting is McKay has even said they haven’t figured out how to implement the new rule with the particulars......Hahahaha...

Maybe that's why Coach T and Haley took it out of the playbook...they are genius's and could see into the future.

It will be interesting to see the final wording of said rule change. They cleaned up the "catch" rule so now they added this HELMET rule.
Interesting, lose a little control over the game (revised catch rule) but gain it back with helmet head rule.
