Hey guys here are my final impressions in this year's draft but first a thank you to Cope, Coolie and to Ford too for his big board. It was great sharing live in the board with the rest of the Nation.
So back to the thick of things, in my depth chart review thread I said the Steelers needed to address the following positions Oline, LB, S, as there was serious lack of depth there, also the need for an offensive weapon was needed so a top RB or WR was definitely on the table.
2.49 Claypool is a really high ceiling guy but just had one year of production and that's why I didn't want him unless we traded back, also I was expecting a lot more WRs available there, Higgins, sheanult, maybe ruggs so I get it, talent was getting thin and they knew they wouldn't have a chance to get one later, they have insider access to the draftees so I know the kid checked all the intangible boxes and had to be drafted there, also ST demon.
I wanted Ruiz or Higgins if he was there, if not then Cush'n'berries, Josh Jones and Dobbins were serious options, the last one just on talent alone because I don't think we are in dire need of a RB. Conner when healthy is a probowler and Snell could do a sophomore jump if he trims up and we still have Samuels as the gadget guy plus whatever Whyte can offer as a change of pace speedster.
3.102 Alex Highsmith OLB, One of the few pure OLBs available in mid rounds I was expecting him to be a possible to target late in the 4th round , but once again the FO knows a lot more than me and if this kid has the heart and talent then sure, gotta get him because there was little depth at the position for the upcoming season plus the risk of losing Dupree next free agency. He should earn his daily hat on STs
4.124 McFarland RB, the kid is all over the place, some say he was at the top 100 list while others saw him as a 6th rounder, I guess part of that comes from his 2019 season apparently being played through injuries which caused his play to be below true level seen in 2018, something that reminds me of the cam Sutton pick. From my point of view a RB wasn't a need and as said before I'm worried about Safety depth and Oline, given that decent IOL players were falling I would have addressed Safeties here especially with k Wallace from Clemson there for the taking.
4.135 Kevin Dotson G, a mauler with lots of intangibles, reminds me of the Willie Colon or Foster pick. The kid has a high floor and could be an immediate contributor. I think the FO played great here, wait till the 4th round to grab the G that was so greatly needed to fill the depth chart. Cushenberry in the 3rd would have been Amazing but he wasn't there for the comp pick and let's be honest, Pouncey is 30, not 34 and is one of the team leaders, he has two more years at top level left at least.
6.198 Antoine Brooks, S. Decent pick but I find him limited as a hybrid safety that could spot start at both FS and SS, he does have the traits to play in the box as he is a punishing tackler. He fits perfectly to substitute the lacking rover LB/S position and should be an immediate ST contributor.
7.232 Carlos Davis NT, as said in the depth threat DL help was a low priority given the Wormley signing and emergence of Buggs last season added to strong, reliable Alualu. I was expecting to get Benito Jones right here but as said before, the FO does their homework and knows intangibles better, Davis fits the mold so welcome to the Steelers kid, hopefully you take McCullers spot.
So all in all the Steelers addressed needs after investing heavily on a playmaker that sure will have Ben, their franchise player very happy for the upcoming season. From that perspective I like the draft, maybe better talent was available at some points but as a whole they covered their bases and apparently got exactly who they wanted, hopefully this is true and brings high rewards in the near future. My only concern is Free Safety depth honestly, salute The Nation.
P.S. I ****** up the title, should be 2020 draft
