Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin isn't ready to start handing out praise to his rookie class, instead he gave a direct answer that should send a stout message to the youngsters.

Tomlin was asked at the team's minicamp if any of the rookies have impressed him and he gave a quick response.

"No," Tomlin said, via Steelers.com.

The coach said it was too early to form an impression and that focusing on their work now in preparation of training camp is where all his players, not just the rookies should be working on when minicamp ends.

“I want them to get in the very best physical condition possible; that’s all they have control over," Tomlin said.

"They don’t have control over the schedule, or the weather conditions. They don’t have control over any of the challenges that are awaiting them in Latrobe. What they do have control over is the level of condition they show up in. That’s been the consistent message from us. I don’t care where they work out at, as long as they’re in great physical condition."

^^^ Hard to say if he's using this as motivation or not. Usually Mike is fair with his praise.

He always says this stuff about rookies. The only time you hear him praise them is if they do something in regular season consistently or right after they draft them.

Who drafted all these talentless ************* then? Tombert?

What else do you expect him to say???

I need a drink. Thanks, Coach...

So are you saying the other 31 head coaches were not impressed so far by any of their rookies?

Probably saying that this ought to be dismissed just as any praise Tomlin gives players is dismissed?

I am thinking it's because all of their heads are too big in relation to their bodies. This would of course raise a red flag to anyone with football knowledge. Right Coach?

True, Coach Shades wouldn't want them to get big heads, so to speak.

I never got the dark sunglasses bit. If you want to communicate best, let the other person see your eyes. I do agree Tomlin doesn't want his rookies to get " big heads " A lot of work is needed.

Maybe he wears them because its... Sunny?

Lol some people act as if he is ALWAYS wearing a pair of sunglasses.

So let me get this straight. I want to make sure I understand the rules. If Tomlin,Colbert, a Coordinator or a Position Coach offer praise for a player, it's "coach speak". If however, they offer criticism or decline the opportunity to praise a player, that's "as good as gospel and shooting from the hip." Correct?

MSG don"t come to camp like Woodley or big snck like he did in 2008

As near as I could tell he did not think the situation warranted praise, otas and mini camp. He did not seem down on any bit of it just that guys learning the play book and performing drills in shorts were not something that really allowed a praise worthy performance. He seemed to think they were able to evaluate the learning process of his players and to see how guys were doing with that. Lots of nothing and lots of spin by the writer looking to stir the pot.

In contrast he could just of easily said Steelers Coach has nothing negative to say about his team.

Glad to hear something other than how the every single rookie looks good like you hear from every other head coach and position coach in the league. You'd think the first round is stock full of Pro Bowlers if you read all of the quotes during OTAs and minicamps.

I for one am glad he doesn't put anymore pressure than nessecary on the rookies. Those new players already have enough to live up to, let alone an assessment, that is only accurate to minimum exposure.

Salute the nation

Some tough love from Coach Tomlin, I loved it when I watched the video, he even said it with a smirk on his face. That's how you want your rookies coming into Latrobe...feeling like they have everything to prove. Gave me a nostalgic Coach Noll-vibe, more than anything....

Sure beats the false praise we're all used to...

It’s a mixed message. J Jones thinks Bud off to a fast start. Tomlin wasn't impressed by any of the rookies. Who do you believe? My stock would go something like this: Head Coach > Coordinator > Positional Coach > Player

I'm still trying to wrap my head around Tomlin giving a one word answer.

Aye. When was the last time that happened?

Its pure speculation on my part, but perhaps Tomlin knows he can be on the hot seat and wants to run a tighter ship in camp.

The defense has experienced a loss of veteran leadership, a new coordinator replacing a legend, and 3-4 young players without much or any NFL experienced that will be playing a lot in 2015.

It has been four years since the Steelers won a playoff game. An 8-8 or worse type of season will make the seat a bit hotter. The bar for me is make the playoffs. The offense is just too good for anything less.

Tomlin and Colbert’s contract is up in 2016. This signals Rooney isn’t sure to stay the course or not.
