Mitchell is a hard-hitter who is just a little too reckless to be making the kind of money he’s getting from Pittsburgh. He gives up far too many big plays and he doesn’t force enough turnovers to make up for it. Mitchell isn’t even in the top-10 safety discussion but only Devin McCourty and Earl Thomas make more at the position.

agree disagree?

I agreed that he gives up too many big plays and not enough INTs..... from this standpoint I sort of agree..............

These articles are dumb since they **** up salary cap dollars vs. salary.

Mike Mitchell is making $5 million this season. Not $8.1 million. Part of the reason there is $3.1 million in prorated salary cap accounting is because of choices MANAGEMENT made to restructure his contract 1-year into his 5-year deal. That's not his fault. And it's not relevant in the analysis whether Mitchell is overpaid or not (releasing or keeping Mitchell can't make this accounting go away so why worry about it).

In today's NFL, most starting veterans (and a relatively healthy one at that) get $5 million this late in their career. Really not overpaid at all in my opinion.

Just another example of bad reporting.

.

This is garbage. MM has been well worth the 5 mil a year he is making. He came in at a tough time and really helped stabilize a troubled back-end.

I would do that deal again in a second. IMO... the Safety position is still one of the few positions where you can get bang-for-the-buck on free agent signings.

Mitchell is just good enough not to be replaced with a mid draft pick or bargain veteran free agent.

I grow tried of his flags, big plays against and relatively few plays on the ball. Any time the dude makes a tackle he acts like he just won the game.

I agree with all that, not his fault and like the pastor said..he helped a very bad backfield thru some bumps.

BUT, he still makes all that dough, his fault or not. He still is an average safety prone to screw ups, some missed tackles and bad angles. Fur shur the weak link candidate in the making for this coming season in the DB category.....at least for me he is.

He's a bargain considering how much the cap has gone up each year. Dude has been a big hitter out there playing center field.

$5 mill is chump change nowadays in the NFL.

Yinz had a good counter from a financial perspective.

But are you happy with Mitchell's overall play ?

Happy enough because there is no one on the roster to replace him. I consider hom solid and unspectacular. Must be accounted for if you are going over the middle and dont want to be on IR.

That's the jist of it. What is better? And where? And who do we NOT have because of chasing his replacement?

Look, I'm no apologist for Tombert. They could have done better, particularly 2008-2012. They still COULD do better. I think they are overly conservative at times both in free agency, roster adjustments and the draft but that is me. It's hard to argue with 10-6 (which is what Tomlin really is). Always will be in an NFL environment when there are so many **** ups and regime changes seemingly chasing championships or bust (with the busts much more prevalent). 10-6 is good. Gives the fans just enough hope for a run. Makes the playoffs more often than not. Has some stars and sells jerseys. Sells out the stadium. All good stuff.

Which is why arguing against it is hard (if not impossible). Even criticizing it is hard. People/fans don't understand. But for those that really watch year-in, year-out decisions, there is some legitimate criticism. I just think in my heart that our franchise quarterback has deodorized the stinky moves this franchise GM/Coach have made over the years. But that is a fact for almost every GM with a great QB. I think Polian gets more credit than he deserves. Some of Belichicks drafts have been horrid.

I think after all these years I've decided it's more luck than skill than everyone wants you to believe. And most are a long way away from even being the best possible.

Mitchell is okay. He was a good signing (most here wanted him and liked him, even at a bit more money than we thought). He's stayed healthy. He has worked hard, epitomized the "Steeler Way" and been a decent leader during a tough defensive transition (coordinator and lots or starters).

Hard to criticize that too much.

Didn't MM play with a groin tear for most of the season in 2015? He's fine, imo. The stupid penalties tho.

Seems overpaid for as many blown plays and stupid penalties he gets.

I think he would be better as a Strong Safety where his hard hitting gets more useful. Basically, he was never used properly ... (cue Shane Falco)

I didn't like the pick up at first.
But Mitchell is starting to pick it up more. He had a solid season imo

He probably leads the team in personal foul penalties committed. He commits them to make up for the fact that he can't cover. Yes, I think he is overpaid for his skill level and what he produces.

Agree. He's decent but not exceptional and takes too many penalties although by the end of last season he'd gotten better in that regard as I recall.

I think he takes bad angles also....but in today's NFL $5 mill is peanuts. Just looked and saw he ranks tied for 24 in salary for a FS this season. Berry tops out at #1 with $13 mill and the 32nd highest paid FS is $4 mill a season.

last season he had to play covering two rookies' backs at the same time, he improved as the kids got better and he had to worry about playing his assignment only

He did try and do too much the past couple years with poor CBs. Last year was better and he was great from games 6-10. Then he tweaked something and lost some coverage range. I do love that he plays hard, plays through injuries, and doesn't complain about it.

I don't like when he takes false steps in coverage, and doesn't have the speed to make up for it (especially when he's playing through an injury). Or the fact that he's always looking in the backfield and has the propensity to get burned on play action. Something your safeties should never do.

We were spoiled with Clark and the heavy hitters that came before him. Getting Clark was an important piece to winning a superbowl. I felt Mitchell would be playing to his ability, so I'm frustrated when he doesn't. He has the ability to be a great safety. I'm disappointed that he's only a good safety.
