Mike Mayock's top 5 prospects at linebacker and safety.

LB:
1.Tremaine Edmunds
2.Roquan Smith
3.Leighton Vander Esch
4.Rashaan Evans
5.Uchenna Nwosu

Safety:
1.Minkah Fitzpatrick
2.Derwin James
3.Ronnie Harrison
4. Jessie Bates III
5. Justin Reid

I have not seen much on Vander Esch, but his production is off the charts at ILB. 2017 Season: 14 games played, 141 tackles, 4 sacks, 3 interceptions, 4 forced fumbles and 5 passes defended. Athletic, but a little thin and played mostly against Mountain West Offenses.

Is Edmunds really that good?

LB:
1.Tremaine Edmunds -thought he was more of a OLBer.
2.Roquan Smith - Would fit what the Steelers need with his speed and athletisism but probably will be long gone by pick 28
3.Leighton Vander Esch -small school concerns
4.Rashaan Evans -A possibility
5.Uchenna Nwosu - see 1

Safety:
1.Minkah Fitzpatrick - will be long gone
2.Derwin James see number 1
3.Ronnie Harrison -A SS so that would be two Davis'
4. Jessie Bates III see number 3
5. Justin Reid - NFL bloodline

I've also seen Josey Jewell in the top 5 ILB conversation. Anyone of them will help our sorry ILB crop and if we don't get one in FA, I would double dip and take 2.

LVE was solid for Boise State, but he needs much more upper body strength.

And you are asking if Edmunds is good. Have you not done your due diligence like Del? If you are going to post what the others are ranking why even comment?

Any chance of Ronnie Harrison falling to us???

Salute the nation

well **** maybe a SS afterall

Even if they do, they will consider a position switch for Sean Davis — moving him from strong safety to free safety — because they feel his range is better suited to that position.

LVE is just not the thumper I'm looking for. If he was more of a rangy, cover-guy, I could live with that. But he's not really that either.
I'm holding out hope on Evans in rd 1. and Bates in rd 2.
I am really intrigued by Bates.

To the board in general - if Derwin James fell to 20, would you trade your 3rd to move up and get him?
I would.

Looking at the photos, Leighton Vander Esch needs to get a lot stronger. I worry if he's physical enough to fight off blocks and want to see the film when he has too. While the stats are off the charts good, he did it vs. mostly Mountain West offenses.

The pro day and Combine on Vander Esch can make or break him as a round one prospect. Is he a lanky Jack Lambert type??? A tall and somewhat thin player from a smaller school? Jack himself was very rangy vs. the pass, and a talking machine with off the charts instincts and intensity.

On Edmunds, I have seen his stuff, that good refers to being #1 on the list. I would not put him over Smith. Usually, I don't comment much on players projected to be taken well before our turn, unless I like to trade up for him.

Del does a very good job, but I have my own opinions, which can differ. If you follow his threads ( TE Prospect ), I think he should re-evaluate what he said on Mike Gesicki, and he doesn't put as much stock in the senior bowl week as I do.

I'll get into the draft a bit more after the combine, but if you want to check the archives, you can see my scouting report on T.J. WATT as he was my #1 guy. I think my interpretation of his game was rather good. .

Yes with an * James is a bit of a tweener type ( maybe too big for S, perhaps too light for LB ) and I think you need a certain amount of speed to play safety in the NFL. If he runs a 4.66 40 or slower, I think he's too slow to count on in man coverage or deep zone type of coverage and would not trade for him.

you were late to the party with Watt, but keep on singing that tune....You wanted other prospects over him initially.

I have been reading their is a plan to move Davis to FS and then either Vaccaro or tre Boston look like better fits at ss, Vaccaro is a guy that needs to be in the box, the Saints kept him to back he is not a guy meant to play that deep. Boston would be a great upgrade over Mitchell, Davis at FS would have more range than Mitchell possibly the type of range in coverage Mitchell had 2 years before his ankle issues got worse.

take the BPA at 28 even if somehow Lamar Jackson is there, add NT Justin Ellis in FA and make a strong push for Vaccaro, Colbert & Rooney have already indicating their are several other vets to approach FOR RESTRUCTURES ( BROWN, HEYWARD, PERHAPS BY PICKING UP SHAZIER'S OPTION THEY CAN RESTRUCTURE THAT, SINCE HE IS VERY LIKELY GOING TO BE ON PUP)
A possible STRATEGY RND 1 QB JACKSON
2 ILB/OLB 3 S 4 WR 5 DL
A TOUGHT IF THEY CAN FIND A GOOD ROOKIE OLB OR A DECENT VET OLB/ILB WATT COULD PLAY ILB AS WELL FOR THIS YEAR, OR MIX UP IN DIFFERENT FORMATIONS.

Well taking in photos of a player to evaluate his ability isn't what the true prognosticators (TMCs, Del, etc.) who put in tons of hours to give a lucid review of players. And trying to compare Jack to him is ludicrous. Different era, different schemes. Plus he wasn''t giving up 100 pounds on linemen back then.

If you watched his film, you can tell he gets manhandled at the top by linemen who set square against him. Hence, he needs more upper body strength.

If you seen his "stuff" then try to elaborate as to why he isn't on Smith's level and from what sources did you use in that evaluation. You may find this hard to believe Coach, Mayock is miles ahead of you from a player evaluation standpoint while even acknowledging the evaluation isn't a hard science.

You "think" Del should re-evaluate what he said regarding his TE class? Give it a rest. You are in your own league Coach. His evaluation is what he ascertained from researching. The majority of folks if polled wouldn't even listen to an argument from some one Who Doesn't Watch Games.

Better yet, if you think Del should re-evaluate, maybe you need to re-evaluate the majority of your musings....

As for you peacocking your feathers about Watt being ÿour "#1 guy".......only you and about a hundred others on here said the same thing. Not to mention the media talking heads out there.

Sheesh......need to add egotistical to your profile.

EDIT: BTW, you say you are a senior bowl guy. Rambling about players performing against the best of their peers. While its true they invite most of the elite senior players, the PRO coaches also MOVE players to different positions. Of which, they are unfamiliar with, or haven''t played many snaps at the position. OT/OG, DE/OLB, OLB/ILB, LB/S, S.LB, CB/S....You have guys being evaluated beyond what they did in their college careers...to see if they adapt to what's ahead of then in the NFL.

So, their game film during the season is much/MUCH more emphasized by evaluators. If you are sticking your opinions based upon the 20-30 snaps a player received in the Senior Bowl....then ok....you've shown us all that we already know.

I definitely don't want the team to reach for an ILB, LVE is not a 1st rounder, I agree with those that ask for BPA discarding certain positions that are covered

That has always been my dream for a secondary. 2 rangy playmaking safeties that can tackle!

Why the **** didn't we move pola to FS? I never understood that one...

Later he started to lose a step. But in his prime I would have thought he could have more than handled FS. But with his tackling and instincts perhaps they thought he could do more damage close up.

Huh? I had Watt mocked in round one many weeks before the draft, and did write ups on his game.

I said I have not watched film on him yet. I think you have a reading problem. And yes, he needs to add weight and muscle, Somethings you can tell by looking at a photo.

One reason TMC isn't here, is I have owned him for years on the draft. Last year Baker or Watt. LOL. Just because everyone likes him, ( Me too ) I'd double dare him to come back and talk draft with me.

Nope, no reading problem here. You said you hadn’t seen much of LVE, not “I have not watched film on him”.

You can tell a lot of things by looking at a photo, like if a person head is too big, but I wouldn’t use it only as a player evaluation technique.

Oh this is the post of the year.....

You think you are the reason TMC left the board? You OWNED TMC for years in the draft?

Hahahahahahaha.....does it ever rain in your little world Coach?

Coach seriously you aren't on TMC's level.

.............not even remotely as a draft elevator, but thanks for playing...

I didn't say before or after the draft, I said you wanted someone else first. I pimped him before you started to come around.

Yinz memory seems a little short sighted.............
