Melbourne, Australia to host NFL match in 2026

Looks like Australia has been added to the NFL gravy train with LA Rams (very appropriate, given Victoria is the Australian state closest politically to California) to play a regular season match. It seems like the Victorian and maybe (but hopefully not) Australian taxpayers will be contributing significantly to the NFL coffers for the "privilege" based on Visit Victoria's statement there was a bidding war to secure the event. I think NFL fans looking for a sunny holiday are going to be disappointed - Melbourne is Australia's answer to the United Kingdom when it comes to weather.

PS Rams are bloody quick on promoting it - there is already a link to signup for Melbourne travel packages on the Rams website.

14 hours direct LA to Melbourne. Rams have home games against both Chargers and San Fran in 2026 so logically one of those will be the game that year as they're the closest to Australia. Based on team popularity and profiles in Australia I'd expect San Fran would be the choice.
 
I'm thinking 28 hours on a plane you are not playing the next week. But they will also have to leave quite early. Will probably need to get there a few days before the game to get legs.

My niece was just there in Australia it was definitely a long plane ride. No way they don’t arrive back exhausted. Only proper way to combat it is to give the two teams a bye.

But we know the NFL doesn’t identify with proper.

Was that definite, or were they one of the bidders that lost to Melbourne?

Edit - I see you were referring to 2025, not 2026. It looks like 2025 international games are 1 x Madrid, 1 x Berlin and 3 x London.

Thanks for the news / post Aussie Steeler, and all the great ones along the way.

One thing to note: Your tax-payers will most certainly be paying the majority of cost(s). The NFL is notorious for extorting money out of the government / tax payers. Just Maybe your foreign government can foresee and halt them in the extortion. The promis of big pay back, the economical boost, ticket sales, ect., ect., ect………….. Studies have proven that is not the case.

Those two teams chances are good, had it been a STEELERS team as one of them……. Well just look at history and you get where I’m coming from…….

There are 17 games in a season, just have every team play the extra game overseas and get it over with. Every team gets two byes along with this arrangement.
 
What time is the KC/Philly match?
I’m rooting for Philly to win the match. The teams game up well against each other.

Super Bowl. Sigh. Miss those times.
I fear we won’t even win a playoff match next year either.

I'm aware taxpayers will be paying for it - it's a question of which taxpayers, federal or state. Which is why I said it seems like the Victorian taxpayers (of which I am not one thankfully) will be paying for it, and MAYBE the Australian taxpayers (of which I am one, therefore I hope only the Victorian government is paying for this folly). Agree with you about the economic boosts not being that great. Inevitably the trickle down effect usually means the trickle down of costs to the average person is greater than the trickle down of economic benefits which mostly go to a handful of businesses in the hospitality and accomodation industries (many of which are owned by large foreign corporations and foreign investment banks anyway).
